(People Magazine)   Despite the Coronavirus and despite the fact the network hasn't been about music for nearly two decades, it's time for the MTV VMAs, where autotune gets you the statue. But, hey, Lady Gaga is performing. The MTV Video Music Awards, 8 PM ET on MTV   (people.com) divider line

The time between when MTV began and then stopped playing music and now is about even.

MTV has not played music videos regularly for half of its life.

They tried to bring back Beavis and Butthead but didn't have any videos to riff on so they made fun of the reality shows instead. Apparently some network suits didn't like that.

Oh at work in some of the cubes some of the young ladies have plenty of pictures of their favorite K pop bands and they are in their mid to late 20s. When I first started there it was Twilight crap in their cubes so an improvement I guess.

That's too early for a mid-life crisis so I think it's more a case of arrested adolescence.

Getting back to the thread topic, the VMAs are pretty much legacy programming for MTV. Do they set aside anything else on their schedule that's music-related?

"We Got the Beat" was the first one played at my house.

But my friend's dad had it a year earlier. And was across the tracks from the school. With a liquor cabinet. And he worked during the day.

I didn't have cable, but we had a few late night shows with videos in the New York area around that time, and for some reason the Kenny Everett Video Show comes to mind. Friends of mine had cable, so I did see MTV at their houses.

Bowie's "Ashes to Ashes" sticks out from that era, but it probably wasn't the first one I saw.

Oh, and as to the VJs, I do remember this homage (NSFW obviously):

Yeah, well my grandpa used to go off that those "hippie types" weren't real music. 50 years from now there will be older people telling kids that the shiat they listen to isn't real music like Lady Gaga was back in their day.

It's part of the generational cycle.

Also, the Kardashians are nothing new. There are always people that were famous for being famous. Zsa Zsa Gabor for example.

Archibald_Silverstein: Fingers crossed that in the weeks/months to come that they identify this as the proverbial "Ground Zero" for the latest iteration of CV-19.

There was a heck of a lot of green screen, as much as they tried to pass it off as not having it, and a lot of the live performances were visibly socially distanced, involved masks and took place at various places around the city. Gaga even said "mask up" everytime she won something. So you're probably out of luck with your hope.

I watched it, as "Ridiculousness" is kind of the default, in-the-background TV in our house a healthy amount of the time, given it's essentially a modern take "America's Funniest Home Videos."

Takeaways:

- Sorry, but if you liked new wave and you don't like The Weeknd, something's wrong with you. Yes, it's often generic pop, but it's really good, smooth generic pop, and his performance to kick off the show was pretty stellar, notably how it was staged.

The Weeknd Performs "Blinding Lights" | 2020 MTV VMAs
Youtube zFzwgFO2bsg

- Lady Gaga was probably the most decorated artist of the night, figuratively and literally. She's proven she doesn't need crazy costumes; she wears them anyway.

- Miley Cyrus looked like a grown-up, though she did ride a mirrorball a la "Wrecking Ball"

- We could do worse than BTS. Yes, bubblegum teen pop boy band from Korea, but they sounded good and they dressed nice. My wife is in her late 30s and she said she liked them, particularly their suits. Yes, intended for teen girls, but at least they're clean cut (some of you will call that a negative).

- Bella Hadid looked amazing.

- The silly theme was glow-in-the-dark private parts, as Doja Cat (you've probably heard "Said So") and the Black Eyed Peas each sported them. BEP's were a little more WTF, but whatever, they're just trying to stay relevant, even though one could make the case they haven't been since their terrible Super Bowl halftime show.

- BEP also no longer has Fergie in the group, for what that's worth. Her replacement is apparently Filipino and, for the time being, feels like she's moreso just a call-up from the tour backup singers than actually part of the group.

- The whole thing feels like it's drawn up to make sure everyone who performed live wins at least one award. It seems to detract from the relevance. As such, it didn't feel like a can't-miss kinda thing. Just a well-orchestrated concert with occasional speeches.

Long story short, if you catch the clip of The Weeknd's performance, I thought the rest was kinda meh. Gaga did a medley where she had a number of quick-changes. BTS is a name you'll hear more of when the pandemic is over. If you're out of touch, you'd hate it. If you're in-touch, you'll say, "Eh, whatever."

It was what it was, and if you want to see it, surely it'll get replayed many times over the next few weeks.

Lady Gaga IS edgy, experimental stuff. Also avant garde

"With my music there's lots of really big Def Leppard-style melodies in the choruses, but it's electronic dance music.  I'd call it avant-garde techno rock.  It is very hard and very edgy. There are a lot of rock influences, but it's not that it's rock music."
To further confuse us on her style of music, Gaga has somewhat created her own genre to classify her music.
"It is an exploration of electronic music and techno songs but I have created a genre of metal / dance / techno / rock / pop music with a lot of anthemic choruses,
