I wonder if he likes Black Sabbath? I'm listening to Paraniod right now. War Pigs is playing. I think Geddy would be a fan.

I love that album.

So, mostly stuff from a half century ago.

Solid list. The only disappointment is that he didn't have something on there that I didn't know. I find a lot of good music from lists where I'm saying "Love it, Ok, Love it, Like that one,..wait, who is that?".

Okay, Zoomer.

Man On A Mission: Alphax: So, mostly stuff from a half century ago.

Okay, Zoomer.

I'm not entirely sure what that means.  I'm 49, so I was born the same year as some of those albums.  But do these lists always have to ignore the current century?

I think he was taking the question to be a list of what albums influenced him when Rush was in its younger days.  Since Rush was around for over 40 years, it's natural that their biggest influences would be albums from the 60s and 70s

I've seen him, in interviews, talk about newer music that he enjoys

2020-08-29 7:43:54 AM
It was a list of bands/albums that inspired him over the years, of course most of them are going to be older. Still a hell of a list though.

/It did crack me up in TFA that after talking about Cream and Genesis, they mentioned newer bands that he liked like Radiohead and Jethro Tull...uhh, wait, what?

You generally need a hipster for that.  Put on your smugness deflector shields and be prepared for a lot of, "I was into them before they were mainstream."

Rate Your Music has a lot of good lists.  Every now and then Pitchfork does something right and produces some good lists.

It means your lazy snark about a 60+ year old man enjoying the albums of his youth was about as insightful as a Zoomer's disdain for anything older than them.

I hope Geddy gets to enjoy his twilight years without feeling like he needs to be wheeled out for display with articles like this. He's arguably a subject matter expert on quite a few things - give the man his due.

Yes, you correctly identified that a number of albums released in the '60s and '70s are old. We're all so proud of you. Imagine being almost 50 years old and being able to inform everyone of the such hard-to-discern facts. Whatever would Fark do without your insight and helpful information?

If you're going to try and be snarky on a Fark, you need to up your game, son. We have standards. "Old people like old things" just ain't gonna cut it. This is the big leagues. None of that minor league snark will work here.

Also Geddy still supports newer music.  He's not stuck in the past.

Here he is playing bass in 2016 with a Canadian indie band called Wintersleep

Like the time that Primus opened for Rush on their 1992 "Roll The Bones" tour? Or again on their 1994 "Counterparts" tour? Or the time in 2006 when Claypool performed at Rush's Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame induction? Or like just last year when Geddy sat in with the Claypool Lennon Delirium in Toronto?

Not surprised to see Björk on the list. She's been incredibly diverse and inventive for 40 years. I'm a fan.

And I was a hardcore punk show promoter in the early 80s, and always liked Rush.

Geddy Lee's favourite albums of all time:

Jefferson Airplane - Bless Its Pointed Little Head (Live)

I really loved the Airplane when I was a teenager but quickly grew to hate their nonsense. But the non-vocal core -- Casady, Dryden and Kaukonen -- were first rate.  I remember seeing them in 71 at Freedom Hall in Louisville. They were so bad I had to get out of the hall. Surprisingly, up on the concourse, outside, where you didn't have to put up with the vocals, they were really rocking.

I'm currently listening to the Japanese Black Sabbath, which I love because I love the original Black Sabbath.  These guys are really great to me.

Ningen Isu is incredible, but people usually call Flower Travellin Band the "Japanese Black Sabbath". They were pretty much the only band on the planet in 1970 who could come close to Sabbath's heaviness.

Yup, they're good too.   Not recording anymore due to membership tragedy, sadly.  These guys have taken it on though, for a while at least.  They've been around since the 80's just playing small venues.  I have a feeling that might change though, once the world get this Covid mess under some sort of control.  I just appreciate the continuation of the genre.
