Leishu: g.fro: Leishu: g.fro: Leishu: g.fro: Leishu: g.fro: LrdPhoenix: g.fro: Just FYI:  "latinx" is not a word in any language.

5 out of 6 dictionaries I just checked disagree with you.

Check a dictionary more than a few years old.

Are you just not at all aware of the point of dictionaries?

I was trying not to reply to you.

I reject whatever you want to call your philosophy that words which are artificially created are as cromulent as words which evolve naturally.

All words, once again, are artificially created. People find a thing they need to describ, and people create a word for it. That is how language works.

Yes. It even happens when a word already exists for a thing. We have a word for that too, and it doesn't make anything not-a-word.

You might want to look up "natural language". Your "all words are made up" is stupid and childish.

*eyeroll*

"Natural language" doesn't mean "no made up words," you insufferable dolt. It means the language as a whole was created not by specific intent but by the spread of created or borrowed words.

You know "1984" wasn't a how to manual, right?

You know you should read the things you are furiously googling to try to make yourself feel better, right?

So, tell me, what are you trying to accomplish? I had left the discussion, but you had to drag me back. Do you think you are going to change my mind regarding your newspeak? Or can you just not stand the idea that someone, somewhere might not agree with your orthodoxy?

Look at this thread. It wasn't about one word or language in general. You were trying to make a completely unrelated political point. And I know you won't believe me, and probably even accuse me of lying, but I actually agree with the point you were making. But all it took was my simple objectingvto one word

Dude - You attacked me for using a term you didn't like, and then proceeded to attack me for attacking you for using a term I didn't like. You could have just apologized after getting duly shown your ass.

You still can, and if you agreed with my point, you could have always shut the fark about your improperly constructed semantic point and saved yourself looking so idiotic.

What a cowardly attempt to bail out. It's everyone else's fault that you objected to a phrase and then got embarrassed on how little you knew about how language worked? At least own up to your loss like an adult.

It's truly unfair that you might know something that he does not and demonstrate that. It's the worst kind of liberal bias when people who don't know what they're talking are shown to not know what they're talking about.

I love how any time someone disagrees with the new catechism, it's because they "don't know". Guess what, some people know, and disagree. And that doesn't make them bigots, but I'm sure you'll say they are.

There's a weird irony in here inasmuch as prescriptivism was originally an ivory tower sort of problem in which strict academics would refuse to recognize nonacademic language. It's very weird to be described as an overeducated descriptivist.

On the other side of things, I am wondering if he's actually bothered to look up what natural language is yet, versus controlled language.

g.fro: You might want to look up "natural language". Your "all words are made up" is stupid and childish.

You don't know what a natural language is do you?  A natural language is a language which has changed and evolved over time, like English, which has roots going back through multiple different languages for thousands of years back to the Indo-European base and back farther to when some caveman, probably well before homo sapiens ever showed up, pointed to a rock and said "Ug."  All words in English are made up, though they are based, through shifts and changes and additions and slang, on earlier words, which were also made up.

An artificial language is an entire language which is created as a whole at once and does not have this natural history to it, though the words in it might be based on existent words, like Esperanto, or not, like Dothraki.

I pointed out a word you used is not a word. It is not. I don't care how many times you say it is. You are the one who has kept this going for no apparent reason than to stroke your own grievance-studies ego (and apparently now get your ass kissed by your lackey). You are the one who let someone calmly objecting to your word choice derail a whole thread. And then, instead of simply realizing that not everyone is going to agree with your attempts to hijack language, or even just blow me off, you keep saying I don't know what I'm talking about and that I'm googling arguments. Is that what they taught you for your advanced degree? Because I think you might want to get your money back.

It's not a word, and you sound stupid for using it. I am not ignorant of its origins or supposed purpose. But I don't care. I am not going to change language to please some middle-class white kids who couldn't study anything useful.

I've said "good day" once. Do I need to say "good night" now? Or is there a new dictionary I have to check to make sure you haven't changed the meaning of those words while I was typing?

CSB

A couple years ago went to a fiend's wedding.  Another friend and his wife were invited too because, we were all friends at one point and the newlyweds bought a house a few blocks away from them. The 'what was at one time 2 people in our friends circle that we knew were very republican leaning' slid way way down into Trumperville. No one sat by them. No one really talked to them besides a 'hi'. Just shunned from most of us.

The Trumper couple left not long after dinner. The rest of us had a fun night of drinkin' and dancing celebrating the newlyweds.

I haven't been in contact with the ex-friends since. Very freeing. I don't think anyone else does anymore.

/CSB

How did you all find out they had gone full Trumper? Did they bring it up?

FB posts.

Nice. And everyone shunned them?

And not in the Susan Collins way. Despite me being a political junkie we didn't argue about politics much. It was understood that I was a raging liberal and that she voted for George W Bush.

We are very close friends to this day. She even flies up here at least once a year and we have a blast. But here's the thing: she isn't racist, a corona hoaxer, a maskless "mah rights!" or any of that trash that seems amplified these days. She's a wonderful girl, is all. Just happens to be a Republican.

Who did she vote for?  Who will she vote for?

If she is willing to vote for Trump, why call her wonderful?
If she is willing to vote for Biden, why call her a conservative?
If she is is voting third-party, why call her anything but a coward?

Because unless you get off on embarrassing yourself, you're doing yourself no favors by digging in.

But if it's some kink of yours, then by all means, continue. You must be building yourself up to a wild climax, because yeesh, watching this has been cringe-inducing.

I had walked away. Little-miss-gender-studies-degree got it going again.

But this is getting rather boring.

I wasn't tagging you or anything, but a discussion on why your post was dumb was and is merited.

So does that mean we're done here?

Yes, you finally get to pretend that you're just so bored of being shown you're wrong and these nerds with their pleas for you to google the basic subject you're discussing are totally defeated by your boredom.

Dude, I don't know what you think you're wining? I disagree with you idiots making up your own words. So what? I'm not going to stop you, And I'm not going to stop thinking you're idiots every time I hear someone use the word. Which so far has only been from a white person who never got any closer to a Latin person than their housekeeper. So you're free to use your made-up words, and I'm free to dismiss you.

I don't want to tag you again, as that appears to trigger you specifically, so provided you quit sniping at me sidelong, I think it's fair to say we are done.

So is it that you lack the free will to disengage or are you just so emotionally weak that you're unable to let go?

Because - and this is going to sound crazy - you totally don't have to respond. Not to them. Not to me. Not to anyone. You can do as you claimed you wanted to and just walk away.

Which would be a good idea, since your grasp on language is tenuous at best.

... see... this is the opposite of done. You're just doubling down again. You don't get to do this and not have your outward, intent stupidity be addressed.

I am a mixed race person with latinx family members. This argument is fallacious, and I think you know that.

I'm not winning anything. I'm having fun watching the train wreck. You have clearly demonstrated that you are angry with how language works. That's not a victory for you. It just lets everyone laugh at you when you pretend your fake rules matter when you call everyone else's rules fake. You're a failure. Your mind is incapable of comprehending the real world. You're a clown and I'm having fun poking you.

It's hard for me to overstate how entertaining I have found this to be. I started this day watching wildfire progress and being worried about my family. It's much better to end it being wildly amused by all of this.

g.fro: The part you bolded is in reference to the idea being pushed that the Spanish language (and I guess all other Romance language) is deficient because it has two genders. The idea that people from outside a culture trying to dictate how that culture should change to better suit the outsides, is somehow respectful, which is patently absurd.

In grad school I ran into one guy from Spain who was teaching Spanish, and whose English-speaking students were constantly objecting to the use of gender pronouns in Spanish.  This was before transgender and genderfluid pronoun issues had come to public awareness; it was over things like how one referred to a group of men and women--Spanish has grammatical rules about that.  Heaven forbid any of these students would major in anthropology and go observe another culture someday.  (The term "snowflake" was not yet in use either.)

I have heard way too many new alternative pronouns invented by English speaking people who clearly do not understand that once they venture beyond English, a new gender pronoun means also devising versions of that pronoun, along with definite and indefinite articles, for every grammatical case (and there may be a lot of them), new conjugations for every verb, etc., and revising an entire nation's textbooks accordingly.  Inventing new gender pronouns as if it were no big deal shows that one is unaware of one's Anglocentric privilege, much like the people who can't understand why other folks don't just co-operate with the police and everything will be fine.

They/them as singular pronouns have been part of English for centuries; they are not "neuter" so much as "unspecified" and should cover anybody who does not wish to be referred to a he/him or she/her.  Another thing that English lacks is gender in the first or second person, simplifying things further compared to most other languages.

/Yes, English does conjugate its verbs, but not very much, and not by gender.  Also, we don't assign gender to inanimate objects other than ships, and you can usually get away with calling animals "it".

Careful, don't let the undergrads here hear you talking sense. They'll call you stupid and old and say you don't know what you are talking about.
