(YouTube)   It's time for ladies darts at England's 1974 Indoor Games, where the lasses serve up tons as ease as they serve up Sunday dinner. Spoiler: match serves up no tons; "One feels that the dry sherries are taking their toll," reports Dave Chauvinist   (youtube.com) divider line

I wanted to make a reference to a certain Dart M. Player who got kicked off his league because he was an abrasive dick, but I couldn't remember his name well enough to google him.

So instead:

You magnificent sausage.  Bravo.  Extra points for maliciously omitting the middle initial.

No love for getting good at darts though?  I has a sad.  I will console myself with the relative obscurity of the RNC thread.

Meanwhile, in pretty-much-contemporaneous snooker news, Big Bill Werbeniuk had probably at least 12 to 15 pints under his belt by the time he made this 142 break:

It's always off putting to hear a snooker frame called without John Virgo, and in this case he's just sat there smoking and drinking his drink.  I wonder if he's doing a running commentary in his head this whole time.  Where's the white ball going?

1.  Pro snooker needs a shot clock.  60 seconds after a red is holed. or a colored ball is put back into place, 90 seconds if players change.
2.  Those ruffled shirts didn't look good on 98% of the male populace.
3.  PROFIT!

A "ton" means 100 or more points (e.g. 180 = a ton 80, 140 = a ton 40, etc).  Ms. Simpson threw for 100 in her second turn, therefore, yes she served up exactly a ton.

There is a snooker tournament like that, but with even less time on the shot clock: 15 seconds per shot during the first five minutes of the match, 10 seconds during the last five.  Every match ends in 10 minutes!

Bugger off. I enjoy the tedium. But seriously, it takes time to line up a shot, and time to prepare for it too. It's not supposed to be a raucous fast-paced affair. The final of the world championship is the best of 35 frames, played over up to 4 sessions. If they're going through a round of safety play, it can go for a while without balls even being potted.

And in the championship just done, there was a shot Anthony McGill was playing for where he needed a rest, then an extension for the rest, then he screwed the extension on his cue, then got an extendable extension for that, and in the end, he decided to just play it left-handed from a different angle. That entire decision-making process of how to play the shot took a couple of minutes, at least.

I think Barry Hearne's doing OK for himself. But, also what The_Third_Man said.

Snooker Shoot Out's great fun to watch, and probably to play, but I love the tension and strategy in regular snooker, too.

I remember hearing that Big Bill Werbeniuk claimed he had a medical condition that meant he needed to drink loads of beer. Everyone in my classl hoped to contract this same mysterious condition.

He had shaky hands, and it took a certain dosage of alcohol to keep them still.
