Hate, hate, hate everything about this dude's playing. That is all. Maybe he's the nicest guy in the world, but I'd happily shove his hands in a wood chipper.

I mean, in the early 90s we all loved Taco Bell. It was so...adequate back then. Now? Yeesh.

He's ok even if he sorta relies on effects too much but really all I wan to do is just run up and cut those feckin' strings!

At the time you could get a couple of bean burritos for a dollar.  It was enough to keep you going if you were a broke college student or a struggling musician in your early 20s and you'd still have enough money for a six pack of Schaeffer for later in the evening.

I am certain there is more than meets the eye here but ... is he wearing a MAGA hat? While the message of what? Feed the Homeless? House the Homeless? F*ck the homeless? is painted on his guitar?

I am very confused. Is this irony? Performance art? Trolling so subtle my meager wits cannot grasp it?

Love love love everything about Morrello's playing.    The dude has legitimate chops and has a mastery over tone like no one else, except maybe Edge.

Just Tom being Tom.  The guitar says "Arm the homeless" and the hat's supposed to be all "Haha he's wearing the gear of the enemy".

Not only did he leave them dangling, which is always lame no matter who's doing it unless you had to change a string in the middle of a set, but... are those the wrong ends? Like I'm sure he knows how to string his farking guitar, so either that's not what it looks like or he's doing it on purpose for some reason. Why?

He's a bit like The Edge for me (although I think Morello's better at actual guitar playing).  He may rely on his effects a lot but his proficiency with those effects allows him to create a pretty unique sound and I respect him for that.

Answered my own question with Teh Googles: different bridge style than I'm used to that evidently clamps the other end, so you don't need the ball down there, and leaving extra at the top might let you fix a break using the rest of the broken string, very quickly, if it happens close enough to the bridge (and most do).

To be fair, he did issue an apology for being a dick.

With locking tremolo, if you break a string the slack at the end can be used. I did that when I played my dean Z that I took apart and never put back together.

this. Its useful but I hate the locking mechanism overall

Floyd Rose trem.

If he broke a string then he can unlock the clamp at the headstock, feed the excess down to the trem and then keep going.

When we were broke-ass kids in the 80's and 90's this was a genuine appeal of Floyd to us.  While we didn't leave the ball ends bouncing like that, we'd coil them up, it was something that we did regularly.

Guitar players are weird.  With Tom it could be something that he notices about the instrument when he trims the ends and doesn't like it.  Players like Eric Johnson talk about being able to hear the difference between different brands of 9 volt batteries in Wah pedals, the feel of a Strat trem when the springs are offset, even Billy Gibbons says that rear-wrapping strings on his Les Pauls is enough of a marked difference for him to do it.

Taco Bell is where our boomer parents were comfortable going for exotic food. Mine is mismanaged by a Serb who spends every minute on the phone. You get better food where they don't speak English, but our parents didn't know that.

some players swear you get better tone by leaving the strings uncut.  Look at every other singer/songwriter from the 70s;  their strings are all flopping around.

i think the main reason is, "don't this look cool?"

rickythepenguin: i think the main reason is, "don't this look cool?"

When you dose yourself with an edible a countdown timer starts inside of you where the effects start showing up.

If I'm re-stringing a Strat or Telecaster I can get all six strings changed, tuned stretched and the ends clipped before coordination deficit starts to kick in.

With a Les Paul I can barely get all six on, stretched and tuned before couch lock kicks in.

On my Ibanez with a Floyd I get about 2/3 of the way through changing strings and I'm ready to fall asleep.  Trying to thread the strings under the retainer, finding the hex wrench that you just put down, not losing small little locking parts, making sure the fine tuners are where they're supposed to be.....

....you go on a race with the gummy bear when re-stringing a Floyd and you're going to lose.

Skarekrough: even Billy Gibbons says that rear-wrapping strings on his Les Pauls is enough of a marked difference for him to do it.

there's a legit physics reason to rear wrap  /over wrap.  if you traditionally go rear entry (cue the jokes), the string, when you pass it over the bridge, is at a sharper angle. when you rear wrap / over wrap, the angle - because the string isn't at that sharp angle, it's a much flatter angle to the same bridge point, there's less stress overall on the string, which makes bends easier (and of course Billy bends the shiat out of his strings).

I did it but (a) i'm a shiat guitarst and (b) it puts little chinger marks on the bridge  or trem, i forget the specific name.  I imagine Billy probably has to install a new bridge or whatever like, once a year.

Selling out isn't using gear, it's being PAID to use gear you normally wouldn't use.

And it might have been at the request of the venue / photographer. Like how the cool old MTV shows blocked out brand names because they didn't have permission to broadcast the brands.

But that doesn't fit your edge lord narrative eh?

Sure, maybe the studio had it taped over. Maybe Tom did it  himself because he has a contract with Fender and it would be a breach of terms. How dare talented person get paid for doing what he likes. (we don't have to enjoy it)  The bottom line is "who gives a shiat?" Only edge lords bring this crap up. Actual musicians don't give a fark.

Way to prove me right with your parroting a stupid white knight meme that is over 10 years old.
