When the knight was on 4b, would a better move be knight to 2a for check?

theteacher: When the knight was on 4b, would a better move be knight to 2a for check?

After the king moves to B1 the knight will be under attack, you could move back to B4 and the game would probably play out as it it did, the extra pawn and open A file wouldn't have an effect

/and if you defend the knight with the bishop Knight F6 check, king moves and then pawn d4 leaves a bishop, knight, and rook all under attack

SpaceyCat: Ummm..... she's also a grandmaster, subby.

Yeah, subby made it sound like it was the equivalent of someone random idiot pulling off a 4 move checkmate on a grandmaster.  Not two grandmasters (who happened to be married) playing an official match where one wins relatively quickly.

/Apparently inexperienced players have pulled off the 4 move checkmate on grandmasters.  It's trivially easy to defend against of course, so much so that grandmasters might not be able to fathom that their opponent is actually attempting such an idiotic strategy against them until it's too late.

Alexandr Fier has an Elo of 2560, while Nino Maisurazde's is 2214. Nino shouldn't have been able to beat someone at her husband's level very often, perhaps once in every 25 or 30 games. So I can imagine it was a bit of a shock in a tournament setting.

It was "was" when the video was published, but he currently does have that title.

And as his wife is not Brazilian, she can't take the title.

One might think he lost on purpose to stay out of the dog house, but if there is any signal that she would not mind defeat it is playing 1. f4.  Also if they want  money from chess success and are willing to throw games, it is probably best to preserve his rating. So I suspect that this one is an honest loss.  Of course subconscious motivation not to publicly cream his wife might be in play.

Knowing the context, that opening felt like a couple saying I'm going to eff with you, and I'm going to eff with you right back.  But I see a clear difference in black's play up until he pulls out the QN, and after, when he's delaying the inevitable. I don't know if that's collusion or only recognising how thrashed he was by then.

I pulled off a Fool's Mate by accident on a classmate once. Had no idea that's what it was called at the time. I just saw it unfold and was like "Huh."

Come'on people, don't be so naive....

First, women are awful at chess. That's not politically correct, but it is the harsh reality of life. Subby is poking fun at that fact.

The average woman with N years of experience playing chess is drastically worse than the average man. And the best women are unable to compete with the best men.

Her rating level is drastically lower than that of her husband... Meaning either she got incredibly lucky, or he lost intentionally.

Opening with 1. f4 is not quite the same thing as going for scholar's mate, but it's certainly weird.

Without delving into in-depth computer analysis of the game, I'd probably attribute this one to his wife pulling a fast one and getting him with an opening he never would have expected someone at that level to play.  You aren't going to beat Magnus or one of the other super-GMs with Bird's Opening, but this game shows that you can stun some pretty good players with opening prep.

what was the point of this post (other than to live up to your farkie as "Pedantic asshole", I guess)

if you were trying to make the point that the husband was throwing the match, only the ELO matters, since it actually describes the skill instead of the irrelevant nonsense you posted before. so, you clearly were just being a gratuitous dick. thanks

He started throwing it away around move 9 with c8->f5

A better move would have been b8->c6 or if you really want to get your bishop in play then move it to e6.

Such a brash, pointlessly aggressive, attack surely was intended to intimidate his wife, who then just took advantage of it. He ended up having to essentially take it back later so it cost him a move.

From that point on he was playing catch up and was on the defence instead of being on the attack and she got to control how the game played out.

Later around move 16 he had a chance to take a pawn (c5->d4) and attack the queen which could have lead to D6,E3,E3,C3,C3,A2+,B2,E6 leaving black in a much better position than they ended up in by that point and he could have salvaged a draw. Instead, he protected his bishop which lost him the game because he forgot he is ultimately protecting the king and nothing else. It was all downhill from there.

He should be careful or that game will be a good analogy of his marriage.
