OK, but is more money in politics really something we should be celebrating?

sirrerun: OK, but is more money in politics really something we should be celebrating?

Probably not.

However, the only way Trump raises 118 million is, if Putin cuts him a check.

Raising it from the right people is a good thing.

Dollars are bullets in this war. We need to destroy them, and we cannot do that without bullets.

Yes.  Because you cannot enact reform if you never have power.  "I want politicians to be destitute philosopher-kings devoid of any emotion, personality, or intrinsic humanity" can be your goal.  But expecting that to go before actually getting your hands on the actual levers of power to force your views upon the world is ... what is that word? ... oh, yes - stupid as farking balls.  There is exactly one towel-wearing ascetic that managed to reform government - and his ass was a London-trained lawyer that used the daft old hippie act as a farking disguise to wrongfoot the British while being a psychotically disciplined political throat-slitter.  So learn from Papa Gandhi and shove a fist full of salt up your enemies' asses so you can fix things, not pulling your pud in fury that someone actually knows which order the horse and cart go in.

If that's how the playing field is set then, yes.

Until you have the power to stop money from influencing political campaigns, that's how the game is played.

Is it depressing? Yes.  Could we have done something about it? Yes. Until you have the power to make sure no one can influence elections that way however, this is how the game is played.

Kicked in my donation as Joe was finishing up his convention speech, followed it with a donation to the ACLU.  This is the most consequential election of my life.

Oh, it certainly helps but more than anything what we need is what the ghost of James Brown refers to as soul power. The collective energy of a populace to effect change. And it's an uphill battle we're facing

Think of it in terms of aid to national disasters.  Every time a hurricane hits, or there's an earthquake or some other crushing setback, the aid workers on the ground say the same thing:  "Thanks to everyone for sending the canned goods and old clothes and toys, but if you really want to help, send cash or give blood".  Trump is the Tsunami and baked goods aren't going to bury him.
(Plus there's the added psychological warfare benefit.  The one thing Trump loves is cash.  No matter how dense he is, he understands a lot of people giving it to someone else and not him.)

Yeah, I keep getting the Trump emails where he freaks out about how the Democrats are raising all of this money, and how evil that is, and then immediately asking for donations and insisting that "we need to best the Dems". Some truly amazing mental gymnastics, if you ask me.

You need to do better reading.

ACLU supports campaign finance reform including the public funding of elections.   A repeal of Citizens United would be a tiny "fix" compared to that.

Of course, if stations were doing their duty, which was originally part of getting a broadcast license, it wouldn't be necessary to inform the electorate entirely through advertising.

Not so much free air time for Donnie this go around. Nobody's going to try to normalize him. No daily spots with Mika and Joe gargling his balls

Looks like Trump will still outspend Biden but without all the free airtime and mushroom polishing it's more of a wash

'Defunding' the police was never something anyone actually brought up. Demilitarizing them, auditing them and removing the corrupt element, sure. 'Defunding' could be boiled down to 'taking away their stupid military grade toys'.
