DNRTFA and haven't been to the UK in a bit, but I thought a university education was paid for by public funds.  Or, is that what those NUS protests were about a few years ago?

The UK government enacted tuition fees in 1997.  Before then it was publicly funded (if I'm not mistaken, lower income students are still eligible for public funding but it's pretty strictly means tested)

That's what she wrote to me after I posted about her on FARK too.

Sadly no, I think mandatory tuition fees have been a thing for over 20 years. Government loans are available upto about $12,000 (£9,250), which covers most of the course costs.

The good news is that the loans don't have to be paid back until one earns above a set limit - I can't remember what it is right now and Google isn't helping. But it's not that high relative to the earnings potential one would expect after graduation from a university.  Dependent on family income there are other loans available to go towards living costs, but loans being loans, they have to be repaid.

I don't get it. Taylor Swift gave thousands to a student so she can afford college? How does paying off a student help Swift save on admission? I hope she's not buying fake rowing photos from this girl.

I am very fortunate that when I (first person in family) went to UK uni in the late 70s I got tuition paid for and a means tested grant for living expenses. The company that my father (a weekly-paid guy) worked for had a trust that topped up the living expenses to the full amount (and it wasn't taxed as my father's income). If it hadn't been for all go that, we would never have been able to afford it.
