Silly story that gets around to cats eventually:

I had a friend with occasional benefits who was into spanking and flogging, and she wanted to attend a speed-bondage course, but she didn't want to be without a male escort for some strange reason.

So I went with her. It was fun and much gigglage ensued. Later we all went to a BESS event. That was also fun, and much (suppressed) gigglage also ensued.

Anyway, she volunteered to get flogged, and I wandered down to the basement where I discovered three cats.

Several hours later, said friend discovered me napped out on the couch with three cats snoozing on top of me.

What can I say... I live a racy life.

I had the same tech today, and when I got done complimenting her on her skills as she prepared to get my blood, she just stared at me and said I jinxed her.

Sure enough, she was right, she couldn't get blood to draw from her first stick in my left arm, and had to go to my right arm (hence why I have gauze/bandages on both arms right now). She was still good with the second stick, would definitely go back again :o)

Poor honey....I'm sorry you had to get stuck twice! Hope you don't bruise.

Nope, no bruising at all when I got up this morning, I can barely spot a pinprick on each arm even now - this woman is good.

Well last week there was another one in the building, in my office even and it scared the crap out of my opposite number. Yeah he freaked out and hauled ass to the office manager and building guy and they told me he pretty much described an alligator loose in the office. Building guy caught it and let it go and laughed at him for it. yeah he is a pain in all our butts.

I had to set it aside on a pile of cloth that is on the floor, because I needed the table space to work on something else..Eli has decided he likes that fabric..alot. In fact he pulled it down from where it was so that he could paw it into the best shape for napping. I'd shoo him off, but it's too adorable!

lilyleftthevalley: Mudd's woman: lilyleftthevalley:

Dumb question:

Monarchs/caterpillars/milkweed...
I live in a top floor apartment and have an exposed balcony. I have a bunch of houseplants that I keep out there during the warm months and several bird feeders and a hummingbird feeder. Is there anything I can do to help at all in this endeavor?

Not dumb at all, and yes--as much or as little as you can/want, you can help.  Yet this is not something I can easily break down into a brief list any more than a website you might find with a search for "how to help Monarch Butterflies".  So I guess I'll answer from my own perspective and journey if that's ok?  I'm a well known rambler, in case you didn't already figure that.  ;)  For me, this really started in earnest when we moved to our forever city (April 2016), and soon home (March 2017).  Due to a number of circumstances, since my college years, I've bounced all over the country so it's been difficult to do long standing things in the past.

The most obvious question I should first ask since you mention the balcony is if you have room on the balcony for a bigger container (like a metal washtub).  The idea is that it stays outside but is large enough to handle some of your native milkweed and a few other native pollinator friendly plants with a bloom spread to keep the wee patch attractive throughout the flowering season.  It doesn't have to be perfect the first or even fifth try! And you can build up the variety over time, or change stuff out too as you figure out what works best for your balcony's "site" conditions (sun/partial/shade, compass facing direction, et al).  Even in a small space, you can offer basic habitat needs for them.  Things can be scaled down once you understand the basics.

There are also lots of citizen science efforts; types of outreach you can do in your community (growing native milkweed plants from seed and offering the seedlings to schools or at farmer's markets, for instance); as well as possibly utilizing methods like community gardens that will allow some non humanfood crops or volunteering at local parks; and even guerrila seed bombing in roadside ditches (though not in the regularly mowed types for obvious reasons).

My path towards helping them really started with a general desire towards conservation, as helping local critters is but part of a whole path towards restoring self maintaining ecosystems.  So for their part, I wanted to create native critter friendly habitats here as best I could on our postage stamp sized lot.  Partly because although the upfront work can be a PITA, the long term payoff is less work because natives tend to take care of themselves because they are used to being here long before I arrived.  Also, if I've learned anything from the activism of my youth, setting an example sometimes exposes people to the reality of what they too can accomplish.

We don't use any herbicides nor pesticides in our yard (the closest thing is baking powder and water spray for cucurbit leaf mildews).  The latter is difficult here because there is a county mosquito spray program.  They try to spray so the maximum effect is on mosquitoes' active time of day and only a few times a year as needed, because there is no such thing as a mosquito only pesticide, and if the spray rewets before it is washed away, it can still easily harm other critters that are more active in other parts of the day, especially on surfaces both natural and human formed.  One can opt out, but if your neighbors don't, that's useless because wind will spread the spray, plus any affected bugs that wander from a neighbor's to your yard can spread it too.  (It's why any milkweed I bring in for food I rinse off at one of our rain barrels which are encouraged here.  I know some places can't have barrels due to limited local renewable water sources.)

Early on, I found out we actually had a conservation agent in my small city and there was a conservation commission because our water comes from here--literally.  We don't truck it in or divert it from somewhere else.  I started going to the public meetings to understand what they do because at the time they had no one taking minutes locals could read at their leisure.  (That's since changed, thankfully.)  Meeting our Conservation Agent opened the way towards a few other things (like being introduced to some community garden/conservation groups) which also in a roundabout way have helped me understand what I, a single resident, can do from a civic angle.  That led me to research further about community efforts, and I even found out about new programs like Monarchs in the Rough, which is a collective effort of golf courses to dedicate a portion of their land to contributing to pollinator corridors, for instance.  (I'm still trying to get our local included, but a change of our Conservation Agent and the pandemic this year sorta slowed that progress.)

Because I'm not from here, I had also already started looking up info about parks and nature clubs once I found out we didn't even have a traditional Ladies Garden Club sort of thing here let alone a Naturalist Club--despite having two state parks in our borders.  That led me to the MA Butterfly Club (which honestly, I still am not a member of because budget), and their Monarch Guardian program.  Because I've been a bit more environmentally aware than some since I was a kid (my family helped this in numerous ways), I already knew they were one of many species in trouble, but not that I could do something besides throw money at an organization or get a science degree to go into the field.

So then I was also starting to find sites like https://www.monarchwatch.org/, https://journeynorth.org/, https://xerces.org/monarchs and https://monarchjointventure.org.  Even the http://millionpollinatorgardens.org/ movement.  I've also been aided by sites that help me identify native, introduced/naturalized and invasive/noxious plants too.  I first found my new favorite book, Native Plants of New England at my local library (which I just bought this month from the Native Trust), as well as others dealing with learning about gardens and critters in general.

Overall, it's been a sort of Alice in Wonderland sort of rabbit hole for me, and I still haven't found the bottom.  *chuckle*

Once again there many posts I would love to respond to, but I'm not feeling up to it right  now, so let's see what my tiny brain remembers:

Someone asked about sexing a kitten - it's really simple - pick up kitten, lift tail and look for either a slit or a circle. Fair warning, IME, kittens will fart on you when you do this ☺

Mah car has had her name revealed! It was super weird, but kinda cool!

I was wrapping up a small job and walking toward my car when I saw one of the local Heathens I know  in the same shopping center. We started chatting about a potential issue coming up in a couple of months. It's not  something that has come up in a while since a few of you were super worried about it,  but I still do occasionally join with a group of Heathens to physically put myself between a different, racist group of Heathens and whoever they are targeting if we find out  about it in advance. Our  bodies serve as the literal shield wall for the non-Heathens who are being  targeted.  As far as total group sizes  go, we are outnumbered about 8 to 1. Still, I like the odds. Especially since most of the other group almost never shows up and it just ends up with a couple dozen of us slinging insults at the handful of frightened, confused ITGs who showed up to be racist farks because they confused themselves with strangely racist Vikings who had found the softest of targets - and instead found a pack of actual Heathenfolk  who are quite pissed about their existence waiting for them.

When the realization of who/what we are and why we are there hits, you can see it crossing their faces. It almost always cracks me up. I would also not be surprised if a couple of them were suddenly in need of new undergarments.

I still wish they'd learn that none of us are Vikings. We're Californians. They should just have some tofu and settle the fark down. Maybe they could quit being aggressive dicks to people for no good reason, too.

We haven't had to do this in quite a while, but it sounds like it may be necessary soonish, sad to say.

Aaaaanyway, I confirm that I am indeed still in, dude finally acknowledges my totally adorbs car and asks about it. Eventually he asks what it set me back and I COMPLETELY blank out on the cost. I couldn't even wager a guess for some reason, so eventually I just tell him "I'll be in debt for a while".

That's when the weirdest domino effect tore through my head in like, a single synaptic flash.

Debt....   That's "skuld" in Old Norse. Skuld is *also* the name of the youngest of the Norns. She is the one who is also cited in the lore as always riding as a Valkyrie to collect people.

HOLY SHIAT, YOU GUYS! HER NAME IS SKULD!

I suddenly screamed "her name is Skuld!" at him because I got over-excited as my brain made the connections, and it made him jump a little. I wonder if I'm still invited to the potential 2020 face-off or if the entire encounter was just Skuld's Bluetooth connection possessing him for the express purpose of helping me learn her name. :-p

/acceptance and inclusion will ALWAYS win, just by being there! :-) ♥
//but .... I chased one and made him cry  last time :-(
///we're supposed to be stoic, fiercely protective and verbally insulting, not "I'll kick your basement-dwelling chinless white trash ass the instant I get my hands on you", so I  was kinda on the outs last I heard

rawr? lol

Djelibeybi: bobug: random guess: Although I bet you were too sick to consider any other way than ahead
My favorite quote by Adam Lindsay Gordon

I like that. Actually, part of why I felt like a poser was that I KNEW intellectually that I was sick, but I wasn't in extreme pain, had no open wounds, couldn't see anything wrong, and still had my mind and humor running full tilt. That first day was terrifying. The ER doc looked at my husband and berated him "Couldn't you see how pale she was? Don't you care?" I pointed to him and said "Get out, now, and do not come back." Mr. Bobug was in tears. I've ALWAYS been pale (curse you, Scotts-Irish ancestry!) Then, when the blood kept hemolyzing before they could get it to the lab (they ended up carrying it on a pillow, so it didn't get broken up), and one of the techs said, in the hallway "Her blood looks like it went through a blender", yeah, I got a bit scared. But... he was my concern. If I was going to kick it, it was going to happen. There was nothing I could do to control that. I could, however, control other things. How I acted (they were doing their jobs, drawing blood. I wasn't going to yell at six sets of blood tests in 4 hours, and half a dozen blown veins), whether I looked at it as "the end" or "I'm not done yet." And so on.

Life's about what we choose, about the events we control. :) It's all good, though. I got a bunch of cool new stomach scars, I look like a former junkie, and I get to go in for the early hours shopping, since I'm immunocompromised :)

AND Djeli is going to let me win on helping people, because she thinks I'm cute and fluffy and underestimates me :)

While I was soliciting names for my Tiburon, someone suggested "Titania". This would probably have worked, though it sounds almost like a name more fitting for a British aircraft carrier. I finally went with "Tori" after Tori Amos, because A) red car ~= red hair B) good sound system C) not entirely safe.

Idunn the Ioniq (to stay with the Norse mythology thing)? Isabella the Ioniq? Ingrid, Isis, Ishtar? Car names should be alliterative or have assonance or rhyme.

Bimmer Jones: I'd buy one if they brought the Tiburon back.

The Genesys Coupe is supposed to be the successor to the Tiburon. It's probably more expensive though. I own a 2003 Tiburon GT, and she's been a very good car.

Hola! Just checking in before I head out to pick my car up  from the shop and then go out to see if the stores on my work list in the Bay Area  are on fire yet. It's been raining ash on me for the past few days no matter what part of NorCal I'm in, so  at this point I just want to get my work done while also not bursting into flame, thank you very much.

About the car - you know, they gave me a rental while they were working on my car. My car  is a 2019 Hyundai Ioniq and  I bought it brand new last year. It was a HUGE big deal for my whole family of usually poors. I was  spending about the same on gas every month as I would spend on a payment for a "cheap" hybrid vehicle, so I got a hybrid. I wanted it new, so I got a new one. I picked the Hyundai Ioniq because it was widely hailed as the best hybrid in its class and I know from experience that Hyundai makes a damn good, reliable car. I got the  base model - NO UPGRADES, DAMMIT! - because hybrids are hideously expensive anyway and that was all I could (barely) afford.

My rental was a base model 2020 Toyota Corolla. Now, before you go thinking "Oooo, now she wants an even newer car" - well, don't. It was a gasoliine-powered car, so the extra "oomph" while merging was nice, even if that extra "oomph" cost me extra money to power. The rest of the rental - I borderline hated it. I truly cannot  hand this thing back soon enough.

Every single feature and nicety that came standard in my Hyundai either didn't exist in the Corolla or was poorly placed (I'm lookin' at  YOU, USB port inside the center console with the cable-chewing lid) or a PITA to use. It was also a strange combo of analog and digital, like they didn't w ant to give up the best engineering for the kind of  dirty poor that would buy a base model Corolla. There were literal buttons on the side of the  dash screen. Like WTF??? There seemed to be another USB port outside the console where it would not eat your cable, but it was literally plugged to render it unusable because "base model". I could go on, but I won't.

I am pleased to report I am about to go pick up my car.

I am also somewhat shocked to report that my baseline level of fanciness is apparently "as f*ck". If I'd known that before, I'd have dressed better - and not eaten nachos and crumbly cookie things in my car at stop lights.

Lesson learned, appreciation found.

Also, having been without her for a whole week, I realize that I love my little car. I love her SO MUCH that I'm going to name her and  buy her something fancy yet affordable for her name day. Name suggestions welcome. Please keep the somewhat justified judgment of me being a complete dumbass  who thought my car was damn near $10K more than a comparable gas powered model *only* because of the hybrid engine to a minimum. I kinda figured that out last week.

Fancy as F*CK.   :-)

My Outlander Sport is the Storm Trooper because mom said it looked like the storm troopers from Star Wars. I told her to get a black one and she could be Darth Vader :D

Djelibeybi: ponsonby: valnt9: I did a "taxi" run today that paid $5. that is very good, since I gave the mean vet $60 on Wed leaving me $1 in my wallet and $9 in my checking acct. I'll be able to get gas for my hungry car on the next taxi run.
the vet determined my cat has plasmacytic stomatitis. I kinda had that pegged as to why Bree was bleeding from her mouth. this is the 3rd cat I've seem with this condition, ALL in GA. the other 2 were much more severe and were helped to the bridge to alleviate any more suffering. I thought I was gonna loose Bree, too. But if caught early it can be treated with steroid shots. Bree will now get a steroid shot every 3-4 weeks for the rest of her life. $$$! PS is an autoimmune malfunction that attacks any soft tissue. they don't know why it happens and there is no cure. steroids reduce the inflammation, temporarily, hence the shot every 3-4 weeks.
so, all in all it is good. other than gas I lack nothing. we will survive, Bree, too.

So sorry Bree is sick..  Can we help with Bree's injections?  Do you have a paypal account>

What he said - you know the routine around here, valnt9 - don't make us start another CATFIGHT!!!

Didn't I already win this week's fight with my SUPERB RHPS gif response? :)

Mudd's woman: Djelibeybi: Morning, all. *stretch*

Just skimmed the thread to catch up but still on first cuppa so it's all sort of jumbled. I'll have to go back later or something when I'm fully conscious.

Nothing exciting to report here so far, which is just how I like it. Moved a few things around my office room to open up more center floor space so I can stretch more often. My back seems happier for it this morning. Other than that, we're getting some smoke from one of the fires - the sky is a lovely shade of yellow-brown and I've been hacking like I have a hairball. Hubs is all sneezy, too. Gotta love Cali.

Otera: you've used far too many words I have to look up in this thread so far! I'll get there, but I do know two things: 1. autoimmune crap sucks, and 2. I want to pet your lizard.

oh and I didn't mean to be LOLing at the autoimmune crap : (

Heh, is okay - the "I want to pet your lizard" wasn't meant to sound like a creepy pick-up line!

Please keep the somewhat justified judgment of me being a complete dumbass  who thought my car was damn near $10K more than a comparable gas powered model *only* because of the hybrid engine to a minimum. I kinda figured that out last week.

Djelibeybi: Diocletian's Last Cabbage: Snuffybud: Diocletian's Last Cabbage: Well, boys and girls, it finally happened.

I think I have covid-19.

Are you feeling sick, or were you just exposed to someone who has it?

I've been sick as a dog since Moansday.  Fever, chills, sweats, headache, extreme stomach ache.  Since Tuesday night I haven't had any solid food or slept more than an hour at a time.

However, just an hour ago I got my appetite back, and I don't have acid upset stomach.  Iz a Caturday miracle!

Oh, hon. Sounds awful - hope you can get something to sit well in your stomach tonight. Make sure you're staying well-hydrated, too. Pedialyte, Gatorade, or even just a small pinch of salt on your tongue followed by 8-12 oz. of water can help (just don't drink actual salt water 'cuz 🤢)

I see bobug has beaten me to the first offer of help yet again...

Greetings all!

Between deep cleaning the house, minor panic attacks and various other hijinks going on I haven't taken the time yet to go through the Caturday thread yet. I look forward to doing that tonight or tomorrow.

Thank you all so much for helping us out! I'm at a loss for words on how grateful I feel.

=================

It appears Maggie has wondered out the cat door for the final time to go to the rainbow bridge. It's been several days and she wasn't feeling well at all. I much prefer being with my furry kids when their time has come but I respect Maggie's decision to find a shady spot somewhere in the trees not far away. She had a long happy life.

Here's a picture of Maggie with Timid Goddess from just over ten years ago:
[Fark user image 850x637]

Wow. That second picture is my Onyx to a tee.

The only time my lap has been that non-existent is back when I was pregnant.  Maggie loved watching Dr. Who with me during that time.

Maggie didn't mind... She looks happy.

Silly story: Dr. Who on PBS and The Sunday Reggae Splashdown on WHFS were the excuses for my G/F to hang out in my room back in high school.

I mean, we SORTA watched Dr. Who, and we SORTA listened to the SRS, but being teenagers, well...

Yes, Tom Baker and DJ Niecee got me laid.

Despite being all migraine-ish headachy, I managed to put a primer coat on my front door. Filled in the dents from the previous owners with some bondo the other day so it was all patchy with the added marks from the jigsaw from when we put in the glass insert. So it was looking pretty rough. Looks much better now.
Also, it is very difficult to paint doors in the presence of curious cats.

maxheck: Silly story that gets around to cats eventually:

I had a friend with occasional benefits who was into spanking and flogging, and she wanted to attend a speed-bondage course, but she didn't want to be without a male escort for some strange reason.

So I went with her. It was fun and much gigglage ensued. Later we all went to a BESS event. That was also fun, and much (suppressed) gigglage also ensued.

Anyway, she volunteered to get flogged, and I wandered down to the basement where I discovered three cats.

Several hours later, said friend discovered me napped out on the couch with three cats snoozing on top of me.

What can I say... I live a racy life.

Ha. Just came across this book while browsing that Harvard Book Store web site:

https://hbswarehousesale.com/products/in-defense-of-flogging-hc?_pos=1&_psq=Floggin&_ss=e&_v=1.0

It's not referring to the racy though. At least I don't think so (from the synopsis)

We've been redoing landscaping and planting on the north side of the house. Magic likes to "help" by climbing in the holes or laying across the area we're working on.

Mudd's woman: I never cease to be amazed at how you do all this. It's fantastic. I would love to see your entire set up -- you may have shown some of it in the past, but I can't recall. You have plenty of other things to take up your time right now.
Are you looking at getting one of those bare floor steam cleaner type things?

Firstly, I'm not employed full time (and this year not even part).  That makes a huge difference.  I also lucked into finding a Guardian mentor which helps loads.  Having extra time to research, especially when things go sideways also helps.

Secondly, Monarch season here in MA only lasts roughly two months of the year.  If I had to do this all the time like some folks farther south, I'd go mad trying to fit it in.  *Thinks of the pile of dirty dishes currently in the kitchen.*  And my numbers even at my best year are nothing compared to some Guardians also in MA.  They release hundreds!  I have mad respect for them.  I had a hard enough time keeping up with 54 last year, and mostly managed thanks to a neighbor that didn't mow their lawn dotted with milkweed for a few weeks when I asked and explained why so I could both find more and feed more--otherwise I would have run out of milkweed!  We planted more for this year which sadly, we did not "need".  I'm hoping this is just a lull year and next year our patches are showing an upswing.

We are a very limited budget household (bought a fixer upper), and my set ups reflect that.  You've probably already seen the various things in part that I've used/adapted or was gifted over the last three years in my other Caturday posts.  (My MiL bought me the modern mesh butterfly keepers after she learned I was trying my hand at Guardianship which really came in handy for year two.)

I do have more Guardianship images on my Garden site if you look at just the Monarch Guardian posts.  There's even a how to for the mason jar milkweed stem holders I made for the larger keepers.  As you'll notice, I'm still learning and adapting as I go (though there are not many posts from this year because 2020 has been, well...2020.)

One thing that's new this year is mid way I started repurposing KFC/Taco Bell bowls (the ones that are black plastic on the base, and clear top) for first through just hitting fourth instar (when they hit fourth, I put them in one of the larger keepers).  Turns out an unbleached coffee filter fits in them perfectly, and with rare exception they cats tend to stay on the inside of it if they wander off their leaves.  Clean up has been a lot easier than the usual paper towel method for the early stages.  I still use them for the larger keepers, though.  I never did transition to old dish towels that could be rewashed, though I do compost the paper towels.

Thirdly, as to the steam cleaner, I can't afford the pro grade steam mop, but I did find a smaller steam unit that has good reviews, and has a bigger water chamber for longer duration use that I can use more overall for both cleaning and restoration work here.  (Full Disclosure: I am not a tidy lady.  We even have a trivet that says "Come in, sit down, relax, converse.  Our house doesn't always look like this, sometimes it's even worse.")

Oooo!  The dying camera cooperated!  Oggers, on a towel next to my office chair just now. (Towels help catch the flea dirt, then I wash them once a week or more if needed.)

bobug: Real Women Drink Akvavit: Also, having been without her for a whole week, I realize that I love my little car.

I have a Hyundai Elantra ELE/coupe, and I love it, too. His name is Pookie, because he's manly, and that's a manly name :) My husband has a Velostar, which I call the Velociraptor.

A friend of mine named his Roadster (motorcycle) Pookie ☺.

Agreed, she is a total love and will still get up on her hind paws when I reach my hand down to scritch her, I try not to do that as she is a *bit* bottom heavy and tends to fall over :o)
