I have accomplished my #1 goal for the day. (week!)
A tree had taken root beside my trailer several years ago. It was now as tall as the trailer. The trunk was 4" across, not a sapling. It got whipped around in the thunder storms and was going to do damage to the siding soon.
I got out my saws-all and cut that MF down. Naturally, it fell on me as it came down. It should have been a 2 man job but none of my neighbors were home or physically fit enough to help. So, I did it alone!
Then I had to drag it down the path into the woods to get rid of it.
But, it. is. done!
I. Am. Woman. Hear. Me. Roar!
(I may not do anything else today past survival needs.)

Snuffybud: Diocletian's Last Cabbage: Well, boys and girls, it finally happened.

I think I have covid-19.

Are you feeling sick, or were you just exposed to someone who has it?

I've been sick as a dog since Moansday.  Fever, chills, sweats, headache, extreme stomach ache.  Since Tuesday night I haven't had any solid food or slept more than an hour at a time.

However, just an hour ago I got my appetite back, and I don't have acid upset stomach.  Iz a Caturday miracle!

Just putting this out there, but I'm between contracts and have time, so if anyone needs a critter moved, EIP. I am a friend of all cats and have dealt with many kitty medical conditions. I've also shepherded many humans through Africa and Asia. If you can manage humans, cats are easy. They have sense, sometimes.

Pay for the cheapest airfare and I'll move a puss-cat. You can pay for dinner at the finest local chicken joint as payment.

bobug: I walked out of the doctor's office on Monday, feeling horrible and nauseated and exhausted. My hand on the knob to the lobby, and I said "I haven't felt right for five months. I keep coming, and just do not feel right."

You just nailed my problem on the head. I know something is wrong, but as I bounce from Dr. to Dr. and test to test, I feel they are treating the symptoms, but not finding the underlying cause. It's frustrating in the extreme.

Hola! Just checking in before I head out to pick my car up  from the shop and then go out to see if the stores on my work list in the Bay Area  are on fire yet. It's been raining ash on me for the past few days no matter what part of NorCal I'm in, so  at this point I just want to get my work done while also not bursting into flame, thank you very much.

About the car - you know, they gave me a rental while they were working on my car. My car  is a 2019 Hyundai Ioniq and  I bought it brand new last year. It was a HUGE big deal for my whole family of usually poors. I was  spending about the same on gas every month as I would spend on a payment for a "cheap" hybrid vehicle, so I got a hybrid. I wanted it new, so I got a new one. I picked the Hyundai Ioniq because it was widely hailed as the best hybrid in its class and I know from experience that Hyundai makes a damn good, reliable car. I got the  base model - NO UPGRADES, DAMMIT! - because hybrids are hideously expensive anyway and that was all I could (barely) afford.

My rental was a base model 2020 Toyota Corolla. Now, before you go thinking "Oooo, now she wants an even newer car" - well, don't. It was a gasoliine-powered car, so the extra "oomph" while merging was nice, even if that extra "oomph" cost me extra money to power. The rest of the rental - I borderline hated it. I truly cannot  hand this thing back soon enough.

Every single feature and nicety that came standard in my Hyundai either didn't exist in the Corolla or was poorly placed (I'm lookin' at  YOU, USB port inside the center console with the cable-chewing lid) or a PITA to use. It was also a strange combo of analog and digital, like they didn't w ant to give up the best engineering for the kind of  dirty poor that would buy a base model Corolla. There were literal buttons on the side of the  dash screen. Like WTF??? There seemed to be another USB port outside the console where it would not eat your cable, but it was literally plugged to render it unusable because "base model". I could go on, but I won't.

I am pleased to report I am about to go pick up my car.

I am also somewhat shocked to report that my baseline level of fanciness is apparently "as f*ck". If I'd known that before, I'd have dressed better - and not eaten nachos and crumbly cookie things in my car at stop lights.

Lesson learned, appreciation found.

Also, having been without her for a whole week, I realize that I love my little car. I love her SO MUCH that I'm going to name her and  buy her something fancy yet affordable for her name day. Name suggestions welcome. Please keep the somewhat justified judgment of me being a complete dumbass  who thought my car was damn near $10K more than a comparable gas powered model *only* because of the hybrid engine to a minimum. I kinda figured that out last week.

Fancy as F*CK.   :-)

The loss
Of our dear ones.

We are safe here.
We understand,
Offer solice.

And thank you,
For trusting us
With your sorrow.

Shared,
It lessens.

We grieve with thee.
We know.

And then,
There are the pictures,
Inviting us into,

Hearth and Home.
So much love.
Captured in a moment.

It fills the heart.

Connects us,
Over continents,
And time zones.

Spreading love,

Between deep cleaning the house, minor panic attacks and various other hijinks going on I haven't taken the time yet to go through the Caturday thread yet. I look forward to doing that tonight or tomorrow.

Thank you all so much for helping us out! I'm at a loss for words on how grateful I feel.

It appears Maggie has wondered out the cat door for the final time to go to the rainbow bridge. It's been several days and she wasn't feeling well at all. I much prefer being with my furry kids when their time has come but I respect Maggie's decision to find a shady spot somewhere in the trees not far away. She had a long happy life.

Here's a picture of Maggie with Timid Goddess from just over ten years ago:
[Fark user image 850x637]

I'm sorry about Maggie. Hugs to you and Timid Goddess!

I think it was eighteen years ago that Riche and someone else stopped when they saw an accident.  The mother didn't make it, but there were two tiny kittens.  The other driver took one.  Riche came home with a tiny tortie kitten.  I was reaching for her before he finished his running joke of "Can we keep her?".

She lived on my computer desk when I was awake and home.  Not quite old enough to be weaned, I fed her KMR on a disposable plate, then transitioned to KMR Step 2, before weaning her onto dry food.  I tentatively named her Willow, but Riche told me that she said her name was Maggie.  She was sort of litter box trained from the first day she got here.  I knew that if she went to a certain spot on my computer desk while I was playing EverQuest, she needed to "go".  I would scoop her up, deposit her in the litter box and sure enough, she would go every time.  When she finished, I would lift her up and plunk her back on the desk.

She was one of our hunters.  No mouse was safe from her.  She found and brought other animals inside alive more often than not.  A live mole, an infant squirrel she found in a nest, garter snakes, birds.  I think the largest she managed was either a starling or a grackle.  Round up the cats, close doors, shoo the bird outside.  Or pick up the snake and take it outside.  The live mole?  Cover with a washcloth and wrap it up long enough to dump it into a shoebox and outside it went.  The live infant squirrel sounded like an air raid siren when she brought it in.  Not knowing where the nest was, that one went to a nearby wildlife rehab center.  As did any live bird that I could catch.

She loved being on or near me.  Especially when I wasn't feeling well or when I was pregnant.  Goodbye, Maggie.

Mah car has had her name revealed! It was super weird, but kinda cool!

I was wrapping up a small job and walking toward my car when I saw one of the local Heathens I know  in the same shopping center. We started chatting about a potential issue coming up in a couple of months. It's not  something that has come up in a while since a few of you were super worried about it,  but I still do occasionally join with a group of Heathens to physically put myself between a different, racist group of Heathens and whoever they are targeting if we find out  about it in advance. Our  bodies serve as the literal shield wall for the non-Heathens who are being  targeted.  As far as total group sizes  go, we are outnumbered about 8 to 1. Still, I like the odds. Especially since most of the other group almost never shows up and it just ends up with a couple dozen of us slinging insults at the handful of frightened, confused ITGs who showed up to be racist farks because they confused themselves with strangely racist Vikings who had found the softest of targets - and instead found a pack of actual Heathenfolk  who are quite pissed about their existence waiting for them.

When the realization of who/what we are and why we are there hits, you can see it crossing their faces. It almost always cracks me up. I would also not be surprised if a couple of them were suddenly in need of new undergarments.

I still wish they'd learn that none of us are Vikings. We're Californians. They should just have some tofu and settle the fark down. Maybe they could quit being aggressive dicks to people for no good reason, too.

We haven't had to do this in quite a while, but it sounds like it may be necessary soonish, sad to say.

Aaaaanyway, I confirm that I am indeed still in, dude finally acknowledges my totally adorbs car and asks about it. Eventually he asks what it set me back and I COMPLETELY blank out on the cost. I couldn't even wager a guess for some reason, so eventually I just tell him "I'll be in debt for a while".

That's when the weirdest domino effect tore through my head in like, a single synaptic flash.

Debt....   That's "skuld" in Old Norse. Skuld is *also* the name of the youngest of the Norns. She is the one who is also cited in the lore as always riding as a Valkyrie to collect people.

HOLY SHIAT, YOU GUYS! HER NAME IS SKULD!

I suddenly screamed "her name is Skuld!" at him because I got over-excited as my brain made the connections, and it made him jump a little. I wonder if I'm still invited to the potential 2020 face-off or if the entire encounter was just Skuld's Bluetooth connection possessing him for the express purpose of helping me learn her name. :-p

/acceptance and inclusion will ALWAYS win, just by being there! :-) ♥
//but .... I chased one and made him cry  last time :-(
///we're supposed to be stoic, fiercely protective and verbally insulting, not "I'll kick your basement-dwelling chinless white trash ass the instant I get my hands on you", so I  was kinda on the outs last I heard

rawr? lol

¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Djelibeybi: Otera: Djelibeybi: Morning, all. *stretch*

Just skimmed the thread to catch up but still on first cuppa so it's all sort of jumbled. I'll have to go back later or something when I'm fully conscious.

Nothing exciting to report here so far, which is just how I like it. Moved a few things around my office room to open up more center floor space so I can stretch more often. My back seems happier for it this morning. Other than that, we're getting some smoke from one of the fires - the sky is a lovely shade of yellow-brown and I've been hacking like I have a hairball. Hubs is all sneezy, too. Gotta love Cali.

Otera: you've used far too many words I have to look up in this thread so far! I'll get there, but I do know two things: 1. autoimmune crap sucks, and 2. I want to pet your lizard.

Yeah, sorry about the medical terms.  I don't even know what all of them mean.  For example: I can never recall what INR stands for, I just know it tells us if we need to change the balance of his medicine and it looks like a diabetic taking their blood sugar.
The Myositis attacks muscles.  The different types attack in different ways.  There's even a newly discovered Myositis that FIL plans to get tested for once it's safe for him to visit doctors on immunomodulation.  It sounds more like how his is progressing.  It was only defined last year or so, therefore there's very few confirmed cases yet

And, yeah.  Charlie is charming.  And Mao and Tabitha love spending time with him.

Huh.... My tablet wiped the original, unedited version of this picture.....  I guess I have to transfer kitty-lizard tank photos again
[Fark user image 421x750]
But Charlie isn't visible in this picture.... Just the corner of his tank

Yikes. You certainly have your hands full as a caregiver, sis. Sounds like your furry little angels do their best to help.

Ugh - I actually fell asleep pretty early and easily last night (for a change) and woke to my first alarm, but I can't get my eyelids past half-mast. Must resist desire to go back to sleeeeeepppp.....

The furfolk sure do know their posts.  Diamond knows he's Old86's comfort and Nick provides comfort for FIL.  Nick and FIL have a very intense bond.

CSB/
FIL used to work for mosquito control.  One day, his crew got to the location they had to treat, and there was a cat, sitting at the edge of the lot.  They offered him a bit of sandwich, which the cat ate, bread and all.  Well, FIL couldn't stand seeing this cat like this. He encouraged the cat into the truck, only to have him disappear through the open window when the engine started.  FIL came back later with cat food and a cat carrier.  That cat was still waiting. When he saw that FIL had come back, he sauntered into the carrier and came home.  Nick had had enough!!
Fark user imageView Full Size

Well, it took a long time to turn this skinny fellow into the cat he is today, but he is very thankful to be out of that swamp.

Fark user imageView Full Size

When FIL has nightmares or terrors (he gets both.  They're caused by his medicine) Nick will climb up on FIL's chest and hold the blanket tight around him. When he's in pain, Nick's by his side.

It's been a decade since Nick came to us. We've started seeing him show his age.  He's such a big emotional help to FIL, that he couldn't watch his friend suffer from arthritic jumps.  FIL found a cat tower that is also a flight of stairs.

Fark user imageView Full Size

We have one at the foot of his bed and ours.  Nick uses them as stairs and a seat, the girls get full cat tree use out of the stairs in our room

I did a "taxi" run today that paid $5. that is very good, since I gave the mean vet $60 on Wed leaving me $1 in my wallet and $9 in my checking acct. I'll be able to get gas for my hungry car on the next taxi run.
the vet determined my cat has plasmacytic stomatitis. I kinda had that pegged as to why Bree was bleeding from her mouth. this is the 3rd cat I've seem with this condition, ALL in GA. the other 2 were much more severe and were helped to the bridge to alleviate any more suffering. I thought I was gonna loose Bree, too. But if caught early it can be treated with steroid shots. Bree will now get a steroid shot every 3-4 weeks for the rest of her life. $$$! PS is an autoimmune malfunction that attacks any soft tissue. they don't know why it happens and there is no cure. steroids reduce the inflammation, temporarily, hence the shot every 3-4 weeks.
so, all in all it is good. other than gas I lack nothing. we will survive, Bree, too.

Good don't get on the cart yet. When I thought I had the rona back in June (probably just a summer cold) I hated isolating myself from the roommate and Isaac and before that when she got stuck over at her BFs home because one of his roommates had it, it was just rather nerve wracking. She did come over a few times to pick up stuff and I had to lock Isaac in my room and he was flipping out when he heard her. Never saw him try to eat his way through a door before. But we are pulling for you. :D

Thanks, guys :) Like I said - I was lucky. I appreciate being here, very much. And I know a lot of people have it far worse off than me. I felt so guilty being in the treatment room at the hematologists... because they're almost ALWAYS oncologists, too. Those poor people, thin as rails, in obvious pain, and desperately hoping it would work... I was desperate, because 20 mg or more of Prednisone a day can really fark with your body, but I was stable...ish. THEY were the ones who went through the fire. I just burned my heel against the fire ring.

Mr. Bobug is a good egg. He finally understood why I didn't tell him, but was still angry about it. He "didn't want me to die alone." Everyone dies alone. And it would have broken him. I didn't want to do that to him.

Life's a wonderful gift. I appreciate that gift, very, very much :)

Meanwhile, I had to have more medical tests/xrays/blood work done today, and I went back to the lab that did my last blood draw (as I was so impressed that I could not even find a blood drop on my arm the next day I went to shower, much less a black&blue or hematoma).

I had the same tech today, and when I got done complimenting her on her skills as she prepared to get my blood, she just stared at me and said I jinxed her.

Sure enough, she was right, she couldn't get blood to draw from her first stick in my left arm, and had to go to my right arm (hence why I have gauze/bandages on both arms right now). She was still good with the second stick, would definitely go back again :o)

What a pretty kitty. It's a tragedy we can't keep them forever and a blessing we had them at all.

Diocletian's Last Cabbage: Well, boys and girls, it finally happened.

I think I have covid-19.

Oh no!!! Take care of yourself and I hope it's mild.
My uncle tested positive after a stay in the hospital for heart issues. My mom lives with him and her sister, and both have COPD, so I'm pretty upset. But mom was having breathing issues last week and tested negative... Has anyone heard of a false negative?
My uncle says he has no symptoms but is quarantined in a comfy basement... and has zero shame asking me for kitten pics to keep him entertained. He loved Coco as soon as he saw him...
Fark user imageView Full Size

Anyway...Coco has always been super affectionate, but Cookie took her time getting comfortable. She took a long nap on my lap today ...

Hope this helps anyone who needs cuteness.

Once again there many posts I would love to respond to, but I'm not feeling up to it right  now, so let's see what my tiny brain remembers:

Someone asked about sexing a kitten - it's really simple - pick up kitten, lift tail and look for either a slit or a circle. Fair warning, IME, kittens will fart on you when you do this ☺

Proxy Puss update:

Went up to mom's yesterday, and I got to pet all three of the orange Jinglebutt triplets... A rare trifecta! I'm used to seeing the two brothers, but Ariana the tiny adorable everkitten and rub-slut usually stays close to her nominal home next door. I think she was there visiting her big beefy brother Simba, he evidently tangled with a gigantic raccoon and is a bit gimpy in one leg. He's been hiding on mom's screened-in porch where enormous raccoons can't fit through the kitty door and the crazy cat lady provides endless kibble dishes. I also got to pet Sammy (the owner of the house) and got to see little-black-feral guy.

So all in all, a good cat day.

Just about every pet I've ever had was a stray or a rescue I inherited. Now it seems I'm looking after a morning dove. It took up residence on our front walk yesterday. It looks fully grown and it doesn't appear to be injured. It even flapped its wings to hop up on the front step so theoretically it could fly if it wanted to. Its behavior is somewhat peculiar in that it doesn't flinch when people get close to it. I put out some food and water for it and it seemed to perk up a bit after that. It took shelter in the bushes overnight but it's still out there this morning. It's more active today so apparently doing well but not inclined to move on yet.

Our neighbor kitty has adopted us. We found out that her name is not Mystic but that his name is Magic. A sweetie. Comes by for food. Sometimes we have lovefests. Our tile floor has been quite popular during the heat spell. mrs edmo had a headache this week so she took a nap. Magic thought that was great idea and joined her just to help out. We've been redoing landscaping and planting on the north side of the house. Magic likes to "help" by climbing in the holes or laying across the area we're working on.

Sadly, the last hand me down camera is now acting up worse than prior (it's a low grade to begin with).  So no new Monarch or kitty shots from me until I save up for something because all the indoor shots are...weird, to say the least.  And not in a fun way, just in a "did you sneeze when you took the picture?" sort of way.

Our worst flea season ever is finally getting a bit better.  Poor Lady Sylvie often looks like a shaved straight haired poodle that triumphed in a death match pit, she's been chewing and over cleaning so much.  She also has been iffy about combings and wipe downs.  I can only do it for ten minutes at a time max before she fusses and runs away if she even lets me.  =(

The boys have been mostly ok since the first burst caught us by surprise, but they're both black with multiple coats and she's white with a single long coat, and I've actually seen them leap from the boys to her if she's nearby.  She's fine the first two weeks after the topical, then it starts all over again and it's too risky to overdose her by doing another early.  I'm still dusting the floors with baking soda, which has been helping  (We have hardwood throughout, so they fall/hide in the cracks).  I already put a steam cleaner into next year's budget, as the little one I have for clothes apparently just ain't doing enough.  I never want to have her go through this again.

On the other cat front, we currently have four in chrysalis in one keeper.  In another keeper, one fifth instar is scouting--so likely will be in chrysalis soon.  I moved a now fourth instar to the keeper the single fifth is in, and the last Monarch cat just turned third instar.  I have found no new eggs since last I wrote, so the current third will be our last for this year.

The good news is out of the second clatch, so far ZERO deaths.  It's a bitter relief, because as I've mentioned, even my first year I did better than this year.  I know part of it is the low overwinter count + erratic weather, so I'm taking what victories I can.

Hopefully all of them eclose healthy and can fly away.  *fingers crossed*

Here's a pic from a previous year release at least (yes, same camera as mentioned above):

Mitch Taylor's Bro: Real Women Drink Akvavit: Hola!

Like WTF??? There seemed to be another USB port outside the console where it would not eat your cable, but it was literally plugged to render it u ...

Nice to hear from you. We will need a pic of said car in order to accurately name it :-)

I think I found my building materials for Fort Asshole (my rock crawler arrived at the house yesterday).    Gotta batten down the hatches this weekend though.  Looks like that storm going through the Yucatan has a direct bead on where I live.  Bertha, the old truck, needs to be fixed (snapped alternator belt) and put in storage and the plants brought in, shade sails lowered, etc..   Buying a generator for my parents as well, they are homebound and will need at least partial power.  Will be fun fixing the truck with my hernia, will prolly get Mrs Sm66 out to help tension the belt.   Life goes on, good and so-so......😜🕉

Djelibeybi: bobug: sherpa18: Meanwhile, I had to have more medical tests/xrays/blood work done today, and I went back to the lab that did my last blood draw (as I was so impressed that I could not even find a blood drop on my arm the next day I went to shower, much less a black&blue or hematoma).

[Fark user image 340x499]

When I was first diagnosed with Autoimmune hemolytic anemia, I had blood draws two to four times a day (They lined vials up down my leg, no kidding). They blew two dozen veins while I was in the ICU. Half didn't come back. I moved to daily, then semi-weekly, then weekly, then biweekly... Now, I am FINALLY at 3 months. My poor elbows look like I was a heroin user. Scarred to all hell.

Long story short, I feel you, and sympathize.

Damn, girl - that had to be awful. Autoimmune diseases are so lame - I mean, it's your own body attacking itself. It's like being a dog who can't be satisfied with catching its own tail but is crazy convinced it must be destroyed - it's just, like WTF? (Please tell me they didn't have to get a sample of your bone marrow...*shudders*)

Transfusions, chemo treatment (also used on AIHA), high doses of steroids, more blood draws than you want to know, and, a year later, a splenectomy. I still have my graphed out results for every CBC, with trend lines, averages, variances, and so on. It wasn't awful... I lived. It could have easily gone a different way. I walked out of the doctor's office on Monday, feeling horrible and nauseated and exhausted. My hand on the knob to the lobby, and I said "I haven't felt right for five months. I keep coming, and just do not feel right." The doc finally did a blood draw. I was in the ICU 14 hours later, with a hemoglobin of 5.1. Down to 4.0 before the first transfusions. I had to sign a paper agreeing that it would probably kill me. I didn't tell Mr. Bobug. If it did kill me, I didn't want me dying in agony to be the last time he saw me. Man, was he pissed at me.

Spleens go by the 1357911 mnemonic ... 1x3x5 inches, weighing 7 oz, between the 9th and 11th ribs. Spleenzilla took up two ultrasound images. My nausea was from a grossly swollen spleen squishing my guts. After a year of steroids, it was reduced to "only" 4x8x14 inches... Weighing a few pounds. Bastard. He just wanted to go to the fashion shows in Milan. I am alive, reasonably healthy, and able to do much less extreme things to peeve Mr. Bobug. I am so lucky and thankful. I was one pause and 'just do not feel right' away from dying. ICU said it was a miracle I didn't stroke out or have a heart attack.  😊

(pic unrelated)

Greetings all!

=================

A live mole, an infant s ...

I am so glad you have good memories of her. that said have you contacted the shelters? Failing that, gone on a search for her remains? I doubt she went far, if she was looking for a safe and comfy place to pass. It might ease your heart, and you childs heart to know where Maggie decided to pass onward.

Found a QJ treasure in the archives! Gosh I miss him.

Boogers aka Minwee aka Boogie wishes to be outside [Fark user image 425x566]

You has the Boogers?!?!?!

I do's! We are trying to figure a home or transportation for him to a furever home. I'm overpopulated and living on $783 a month plus $16 Snap. He's a sweetie but I have to keep my cats away from him, they just aren't blending.

Thank you, random guess, for taking care of Q_J's Boogers (I'm sure he would've appreciated that phrasing). I see you have an Amazon wish list on your Fark profile. Is there anything you need in particular? Just say the word and I'm sure someone from the school of helper piranha will, uh, help out. :-)

Oh I forgot about the Amazon link! I should correct it and will do so momentarily. You're sneaky!
I live for my pets. Don't we all. Two dogs, a boxer and a rat terrier. Ten kitties. Four have medical issues - a diabetic named Carl. Trying to stabilize him. Mucho dineros to feed that guy!
Two seniors with chronic constipation.
One epileptic cat.
A senior declaw that was dumped on me. Snickers and Booger both need wet food. Snickers eats a can a day plus access to senior dry. Boogers is down to two cans a day from three. A tad picky about his dry I have to find a brand for him. He can eat what I can get, He was super skinny.

The poop sisters take meds everyday.  T
epileptic cat is going well as long as we keep her meds on time. She lets us know! Because that's also treats time!
I sometimes use my snap to buy chicken sshhhh. A ten pound bag of chicken quarters make a mess of good pet food. This last time I put green beans and I forget what else to stretch it out the recipe and avoid buying a hundred cans a month. Less waste. They don't like this months homemade so the dogs get a little. Spoiled all of them!

So my fridge looks like all the yummos for pets and wee spot for me! Same for the house! A small space for me, most of it's for them. I want to reincarnate as one of my pets.
I make it work. I dont buy anything for me or the house. Ugh house needs lots of work. Picture window may not last the winter!
I
thankful I have low cost vetting with Pets I Need of Greater Cincinnati. $20 visit, $5 if a tech and includes his blood draw for glucose.  $7 flea meds. (Times ten) Insulin is about $40 a vial. If needles are donated then it's $10. The food is the killer! Carl's dietitic management is $38 per flat, 3 per month and $45 for a bag of dry - don't give his as much dry. Too carby. Wish that damn cat would stabilize! He's semi friendly but I have to keep him crated because he escapes or hides for days. Turd.
Fuel to get there is sometimes an issue but we figure it out. Litter is ways an issue. Not only for cost but for dealing with it. I need the lightweight because I'm decrepit from back problems and old wet pee at litter is hard to manage in bulk.

I cram other household bills in where I can. Truck registration is past due. I know theyre being lenient which is good because truck needs repairs. I am fortunate to live in a small rural town. Not a lot of services like big cities have but a decent enough food bank and guy who will wrench on my truck and occasionally buy parts in exchange for a casserole or babysitting. We make it work.

BTW - I was in better times and fully able to care for my cats and dogs plus other peoples in my community. Then I lost the bulk of my savings and became disabled. I promise to keep a pet start to finish. I've got 4 seniors, 2 young under 4 and everyone else is middle aged. They're all castoffs I could not find homes for. I now good for a shelter but not acquiring any more! [Fark user image image 425x424]

Does your epileptic kitty take phenobarbitol?  If so, I have 11 tablets I can send you of 16.2 mg each. A few years old but kept in a cool dark cabinet.

Yes! There's math but the pharmacy does it - I get 15mg tablets and she gets .75 tablet in the morning and.5 at night. This keeps her to two seizures a year the last couple of years and they're not as bad as when she was a kitten having them every 3 hours.

It's insane how the price increased on the phenobarbitol!  At least out here: I initially was paying $11 a bottle & by the end it was $66 a bottle! 😠  Legal drug manufacturers are worse than illegal drug dealers IMHO😠

(actually I NEVER need my alarm clock)

I am the same I haven't needed an alarm since 2005 after I got a steering wheel to the head, it was a long time before I had a good night sleep.
Last night I fell asleep out in the living room watching Netflix and was woken up at 2ish by the roommate dying her hair and getting ready for a trip to Shenandoah park in Virginia, went to my room and fell asleepish off and on til she left then I conked out til 6. Went for my walk in the park after that and now I am home.

Magnesium, which most folks are at least somewhat deficient in, helps with quality sleep.  I've been using CALM by Natural Vitality.  It's a powder you sprinkle into hot water & when it's done fizzing you can add cool water or not & drink it warm.  It's absorbed into your system quickly so take it an 30-60 minutes before bed & you should notice a difference. It comes in single serve packets as well as larger quantities so you can try it without a major commitment.

Obviously you can also get magnesium supplements in tablet & capsule form as well. And plenty of foods are high in magnesium: almonds come to mind.  I hope that you're able to get sleep soon!

This might be a good try for tigerose for sure?
I've been taking CALM for years LOL.  But I have been taking it in the morning.
It's part of my morning cocktail of various powders to help with my, er...digestive issues.
Even with all the stuff I take, I still deal with this um, tendency. Yeah, I'm donating my body to science. Or at the very least my G.I. tract.

I think I could break some records regarding how many things DON'T impact my guts. And this is coming from someone who essentially drinks her weight in water every day, exercises, and eats ridiculously healthy.
Even my gastroenterologist that I was seeing for a while was impressed. So to speak.
I don't know if taking the Calm at night would make a difference vis-a-vis keeping me asleep throughout the night...
I like that the Calm has the stevia-sweetened version. Just wish it were a bit less costly, considering I go through it relatively quickly.

TMI, sorry.

While I was soliciting names for my Tiburon, someone suggested "Titania". This would probably have worked, though it sounds almost like a name more fitting for a British aircraft carrier. I finally went with "Tori" after Tori Amos, because A) red car ~= red hair B) good sound system C) not entirely safe.

Otera: valnt9: I have accomplished my #1 goal for the day.

Good job!! Have yourself an appropriate celebratory drink after that!

You just nailed my problem on the head. I know something is wrong, but as I bounce from Dr. to Dr. and test to test, I feel they are treating the symptoms, but not finding the underlying cause. It's frustrating in the extreme.

[Fark user image image 473x470]

sometimes, it is about refusing a platitude. That guy had me on my way out the door. He ignored that I had been on steroids off and on for 5 months, had lost 40 pounds WHILE on steroids, and was throwing up constantly. In his defense, AIHA is pretty rare, and he didn't know the antibiotic he gave me was the precisely WRONG thing to give me, and made hemolysis amp up to 100.

If your doc doesn't listen, find one who will, and say you are sick of being turfed. *hugs* If you need help finding docs in your area, or calling for appointment availability, let me know. We can work it. That is how I found my current doc. I called, and said I am allergic to most antibiotics and have AIHA, and wanted a doc who was not afraid to treat me, and didn't ignore or dismiss me when I went in. I found an AMAZING doc. She even goes to the CDC site and checks whether more immunizations are recommended for me, and emails me about it. They are out there.

Yikes!!

FIL has polymyositis or Inclusive Body Myositis, so I get how frustrating living with an autoimmune condition can be.  We have to give his a weekly INR at home, along with Methotrexate injections.  And of course the daily Prednisone.  He hasn't had any splenic complications, but when they discovered his condition it was pretty miserable too. He had been in a study for a blood pressure control device, but developed a pocket infection around it after starting treatment for the Myositis.  They had to remove him from the study and take their implant back.

He's very grateful to have someone waiting in his room to comfort him when the Myositis acts up.

It was a good walk and the driving range was real packed with people this morning.

For anyone that doesn't know, the first deer pic of the three with the little deer...it's standing next to milkweed.  That made me think of saying here, "If you want to help Monarch butterflies and have a yard, plant some local milkweed!"  Because the adults can be fed from any number of pollinator plants, but the baby cats can only eat milkweed.  (Later instar cats technically can eat a few types of soft fruits in a pinch when a Guardian runs short on leaves, but they don't naturally look for such if they are in the wild.)

If you plant any from seed, plant them in fall or throw them in the freezer for a few weeks before planting in spring because they need cold stratification to germinate properly.  The plants are fairly hardy on their own unless there's a drought when they could use some watering help.

They will spread underground as well as from seed.  So if you only want a small patch, just pull whichever new plants grow up outside that patch and toss them in the compost.

You can also detach the seed pods to help keep spread down.  If you want to save them for yourself or to share, wait til the pods brown before detaching them, and there's tips on Youtube for how to do so in the easiest way to not deal with the fluff end that helps them travel in wind. If they start to crack before browning, just put a rubber band around them to keep the fluff from sneaking out before you're ready to harvest the seeds.

Thanks for the info, lily - they have some cool stuff on that site, think I'll make an account

Chewy.com was very nice to a friend of mine when her doggo went to the bridge. She had just received a monthly shipment of dog food for him and when she asked about returning it, they not only said, "keep it, it's on us," but they sent her a bouquet and a card!

They were acquired by PetSmart a few years ago, but customer service like that is worth supporting, IMO.

Hmm, I don't know why I didn't think of this last night (okay, I was tired), but I was able to buy it directly from Amazon (not 3rd party), for less $$$ and it will arrive Tuesday!!!

When I clicked the "See all buying options" button last night, it went to the 3rd party sellers. But this time I clicked on the product description, "Purina Friskies Canned Wet Cat Food 40 ct. Variety Packs", and they had it in stock for the list price.

Here's a picture of Maggie with Timid Goddess from just over ten years ago:

So sorry for your loss of Maggie.

Mitch Taylor's Bro: I would've liked to have gotten you some gushy fud, but Amazon is sold out and 3rd-party suppliers wouldn't fulfill the gift order. But hopefully the stuff in the order will help you out a bit. Thank you for caring for so many fur kids!

I just checked with customer service with Chewy.com, and they offer both gift cards as well as being able to add another contact information in one's account for gifting purposes.  If someone isn't comfortable giving out their street addy, the gift card info can be emailed to them to use themselves.

I am taking a chance here, and answering before I cuott...Boogers/MinWee is in Indianapolis. He needs to go to Montana. The budget does include a round trip ticket, on the cheapest airline we can find. Fares are super low right now.

I hope you mean fried chicken!  Missoula has a long-time restaurant Double Front chicken that makes each order from scratch!  Definitely not fast food!  Hopefully by the time you arrive I'll have picked up some work & can you there.  It's not pricey at all, I just haven't worked in 2 weeks.  I AM applying for unemployment even though I know the school is going to contest it 😠

Awesome, now we have a couple of options! Q_J would be so proud of us :-)

Mitch Taylor's Bro: ProcrastinationStation: Got the list- is your shipping address part of it? It's wanting to ship to me.

There should be another option to ship to the wish list recipient, who's address is hidden for privacy purposes. IIRC, the button doesn't look like the other shipping options.

there is another option I didnt know about, its becoming a collaborator for a wishlist. essentially it allows someone to add and remove things from another persons wish list. So if you have someone you know who is elderly or a luddite then you can help them set up a wishlist and keep it up to date with things they may need. I didnt explain it well but it helps when you know someone in need but has some issue with using a wishlist so you can help them so that others can get them stuff they may need.

Mudd's woman: random guess: Mudd's woman: almostsane:

TMI, sorry.

Magnesium does indeed help sleep, it's fabulous! It also helps with certain bowel conditions, mostly "slow" bowels. However, it is not an option for those of us with um, er, ah.. rapid exit strategies.

Yeah, I'm just the opposite. And even though I continue to use the magnesium citrate, I still deal with the sloooooow. Like crazy slow. It's frustrating. I've tr ...

He loved Coco as soon as he saw him...[Fark user image 850x637]
Anyway...Coco has always been super affectionate, but Cookie took her time getting comfortable. She took a long nap on my lap today ...[Fark user image 850x637]
Hope this helps anyone who needs cuteness.

I had a false negative. According to my doctor it's not that unusual.  I don't have the greatest lungs and was really sick for 2 months but never had to go in the hospital. I got an ambulance ride to the ER but they didn't admit me. I'm fine now, it just took time.

maxheck: Question for experienced kittyfriends:

Simba was in a fight recently, he doesn't have any sign of wounds or infection, perhaps they healed already.

But he does not put weight on his back right leg. Mom, who sees him daily and has an RN in human medicine thinks it's a dislocation.

So I guess my question is this.... Do vets have any way to yoink and set a kitty leg? Anyone with experience here?

Vets can do a lot of things a regular doctor can. Best bet is to make an appointment. Something is wrong, and a vet can help your cat get healthy and strong again.

Just say you're from Fark in the subject, so we know it isn't spam. Or post here, and watch the Helper Piranha come out :)

Services offered:
* A friendly ear
* Human food
* Pet food
* Vet assistance
* Resume help

We need to be there for each other. Every one of you matters, and shouldn't be suffering, or worried that you won't have enough to buy groceries.

random guess: Although I bet you were too sick to consider any other way than ahead
My favorite quote by Adam Lindsay Gordon

I like that. Actually, part of why I felt like a poser was that I KNEW intellectually that I was sick, but I wasn't in extreme pain, had no open wounds, couldn't see anything wrong, and still had my mind and humor running full tilt. That first day was terrifying. The ER doc looked at my husband and berated him "Couldn't you see how pale she was? Don't you care?" I pointed to him and said "Get out, now, and do not come back." Mr. Bobug was in tears. I've ALWAYS been pale (curse you, Scotts-Irish ancestry!) Then, when the blood kept hemolyzing before they could get it to the lab (they ended up carrying it on a pillow, so it didn't get broken up), and one of the techs said, in the hallway "Her blood looks like it went through a blender", yeah, I got a bit scared. But... he was my concern. If I was going to kick it, it was going to happen. There was nothing I could do to control that. I could, however, control other things. How I acted (they were doing their jobs, drawing blood. I wasn't going to yell at six sets of blood tests in 4 hours, and half a dozen blown veins), whether I looked at it as "the end" or "I'm not done yet." And so on.

Life's about what we choose, about the events we control. :) It's all good, though. I got a bunch of cool new stomach scars, I look like a former junkie, and I get to go in for the early hours shopping, since I'm immunocompromised :)

AND Djeli is going to let me win on helping people, because she thinks I'm cute and fluffy and underestimates me :)

bobug: Djelibeybi: bobug: sherpa18: Meanwhile, I had to have more medical tests/xrays/blood work done today, and I went back to the lab that did my last blood draw (as I was so impressed that I could not even find a blood drop on my arm the next day I went to shower, much less a black&blue or hematoma).

Bobug
that is insane! That's a journey rather not taken. I'm glad you recovered and that Mr Bobug wasn't heartbroken! I cannot even imagine the courage something like that takes to get through. Although I bet you were too sick to consider any other way than ahead

I do t know when we send rain it will turn into mudslides, you really need to stop overdoing it there.

Djelibeybi: Timid Goddess: Real Women Drink Akvavit: Hola!

It was also a strange combo of analog and digital, like they didn't want to give up the best engineering for the kind of  dirty poor that would buy a base model Corolla. There were literal buttons on the side of the  dash screen. Like WTF??? There seemed to be another USB port outside the console where it would not eat your cable, but it was literal ...

Hey, how's the coughing/breathing thing going? Any better?

Everything is on fire, so while I'm not super concerned about my current coughing sitch, I'm def still coughing along with everyone else.

Fairly disconcerting in the midst of respiratory pandemic. Obviously.

Some of the neighborhood teens found this sweet kitty soaking wet (we figure someone doused him with a hose) and panting in one of the complex greenspace.  Very hungry. So tried him off, gave him some noms and posted an ad and notified the animal shelter. They took him home so hopefully he'll have a happy ending.

GOOD on you for saving the baby. Is it ok?

They just called me, good news... Nothing broken, but he's got some road rash. He either jumped or was thrown from a vehicle. At least he wasn't hit or run over. Other than that, just the usual feral kitten stuff.

I hate the way the vet does things now. I had to tell them 3 times "I don't know what's wrong with him. I found him in the middle of an on ramp. He doesn't have a name I just found him."

He's Lucky, I don't normally take that route home. The Catmobile is due for a transmission flush at the dealership. If I go in person I can flirt with the woman in the service department. She usually figures out a way to make GM pay for the flush for me. So he's kinda lucky I'm a flirt. Or I would've just called the dealership...

/14th kitty I've taken in this year

14?  You're catching up to me (17, not counting new kitty that may be coming).  I wonder if we're soul mates?

I've taken in 14 kitties this year. I already had 14 adult cats. So I now have 28. As crazy as that sounds... I live on 10 acres in a ruralish area. I have a 100' x 100' cat proof fence* around the back of my house. Normally there's 4 cats in the house, and the rest stay in the fenced in area. But this isn't a normal year. I'm slowly introducing the new kitties to the back yard, to get them out of the house. We are very lucky that almost all of the cats get along. There's 2 sisters that despise one another. But their skirmishes only last about 5 seconds.

*nothing is really cat proof

/probably gonna to extend the cat fence this year
//and build another cat house

Yeah, it's been a crazy year. A lot of people can't take in kitties this year because of cut work hours, unemployment and possible evictions... So we've been picking up the slack.

I wish - now the hubby has to go in to work twice today. With, like, other people. Some of whom have...children.
And he's decided that, since he has to show up at work for an hour this afternoon he'll just swing by the grocery store on his way home - then it's back to work around 7pm.

So: I've got 91% rubbing alcohol and I've got Clorox bleach. Which do I hose him down with first?

have him take off his shoes outside. then his clothes when he gets inside. clothes go straight to washing machine and he takes a shower. then clean clothes.
wash, rinse, repeat.
save the wipes and alcohol for surfaces.

Let us know if you need anyone to send you groceries, okay, doll?  Even if you're feeling a little better. While you wait for your test results, it's best to assume the result is positive and that you'll wind up with a chronic or acute case of it.  That way you have your lifelines arranged in any case and can get focus on getting better.

Goodbye, Maggie.

lemurtx: almostsane: lemurtx: Mudd's woman: Oddly for me, I have slept like crap the last few nights -- waking up constantly (more than usual) and essentially being awake since about 3 each night.

Now I feel like complete ARSE. I really seem to do poorly without a certain amount of sleep -- an amount that others might consider...much.

I can't help it. : - (

[i.redd.it image 500x375]

(actually I NEVER need my alarm clock)

I feel your pain. My new doc prescribed trazodone for sleep and it's not working. I got a new bottle of melatonin and that didn't help, and the vistaril prescribed by old doc made me really sleepy the next day. I think I got maybe 3 hours of sleep, and finally gave up at 12:30 and got up early to get ready for work. 😩 It didn't help that two family members texted and woke me😕

Try Gabapentin?  My dog, Max, was (is) taking Trazodone & it helped some but when we added Gabapentin it really helped.  Thank Bast it's not that expensive.  There's also an OTC version you can get in the supplement section.  Also, a friend of mine swears by valerian root!  Also in the supplement section.  Good luck!!

Thank you I will look into gabapentin and valerian root. Melatonin has worked in the past but I've found different brands affect me differently.

That's likely the inactive ingredients.  I have some cancer survivor girls who can only take tamoxifen from specific manufacturers because they have reactions to others, despite it ostensibly being the exact same medicine.

TMI, sorry.

It was NOT tmi!!  Anyway, you might try taking CALM in the evening as well, just to see if it helps.  I take a tsp & 1/2 three times a day.  I just bought a HUGE (20 oz) container of it @ Costco for $4 more than what I was paying for the 8oz bottle at the Good Food Store (Missoula's independent health food store).  I'm not thrilled that it's flavored (raspberry-lemon) as I prefer the unflavored but for the cost savings I'll deal.  I hadn't even thought to look for it at Costco 'til a friend suggested it.

Found a QJ treasure in the archives! Gosh I miss him.

Boogers aka Minwee aka Boogie wishes to be outside [Fark user image 425x566]

You has the Boogers?!?!?!

Boogers is still in Indiana. We haven't found anyone wiling to fly out to Montana with him.

Would it be feasible to contact a local shelter to see if someone would be willing to do that if the flight was paid? Just throwing out an idea.

Another idea: can we afford a pet taxi service? I know it's not ideal, but if it solves the problem of getting Boogers out of Indiana and into a good home, I could kick in a few more bucks.

I've never used one of these services, but a quick search for "pet air taxi organization" led to

http://www.flypets.com/airports.asp

Again, I've never used a service like this, so I don't know how the animals are treated, but I'm just tossing ideas out there.

I'm just CUOTT from the parts I missed because my internet ....gggrrr

So far most of the airlines that carry unaccompanied pets have closed that service during the pandemic - United, American Air etc. One Farker, almostsane is looking into Pilots and Paws, which has to be initiated via a rescue, which should not be a problem. It's just moving slow which is understandable.

Magnesium does indeed help sleep, it's fabulous! It also helps with certain bowel conditions, mostly "slow" bowels. However, it is not an option for those of us with um, er, ah.. rapid exit strategies.

That window perch is the perfect size for him.
And thanks for the good wishes. I read for a bit but was basically out of commission pretty early last night.
Woke up a bunch, but that seems to be normal for me. At least i went back to sleep.

So, of course now,

random guess: bobug: While a lot of us joke about competing for people to help... we are here. Times are rough. Jobs aren't coming back quickly. We're not even part way through this pandemic. If you, or your fur babies, need help, reach out. I know Djeli and I have emails in our profiles that you can use, that are valid (I can't remember who else's are, just that a few aren't). Just say you're from Fark in the subject, so we know it isn't spam. Or post here, and watch the Helper Piranha come out :)

Services offered:
* A friendly ear
* Human food
* Pet food
* Vet assistance
* Resume help
* other duties as assigned.

We need to be there for each other. Every one of you matters, and shouldn't be suffering, or worried that you won't have enough to buy groceries.

That's always a struggle, to ask for help. I dont know if it's pride so much as it accepting that one is weak and unable to care for ones one's self or pets.

Eli went outside with us today. He toddled around in the back yard. He likes skulking through the underbrush at the back of the lot, as well as the hydrangea bushes that are super bushy? They were there when we bought the place, and they have smaller white blossom clumps..And you really, really need to keep them in check, or they will take over.

This cat LOVES the weighted blanket.  So does the other cat.  And the dog.  It's a pretty great blanket.

I've been thinking about buying one for myself - the weight of the old quilt (R.I.P.) my Nana made for me used to help me with my anxiety. Do you recall the brand and weight of the one you have?

As for pet blankets, my babies stole all of our Chanasya brand fuzzy blankies and pillow covers. Kate would make sure to take a nap on every single one of them, every single day! They're weird: they have no filling at all, but are super warm (especially two of them) and super soft. I love them, but there's no weight to them, really, which I miss.

Mine is from Target!  We did a ton of research and then found them at Target for a fraction of the price.  And I can't imagine the more expensive ones being any better.  This is a GREAT blanket for anxiety.  Pro-tip: get the duvet cover, if you see it.  Especially handy if you have animals that love blankies, and it sounds like you do.

Real Women Drink Akvavit: Mah car has had her name revealed!

I couldn't even wager a guess for some reason, so eventually I just tell him "I'll be ...

Despite being all migraine-ish headachy, I managed to put a primer coat on my front door. Filled in the dents from the previous owners with some bondo the other day so it was all patchy with the added marks from the jigsaw from when we put in the glass insert. So it was looking pretty rough. Looks much better now.
Also, it is very difficult to paint doors in the presence of curious cats.

No experience, but I would expect it to be pretty much the same as a human vet, anesthetic for the pain and to relax the muscle, then move the joint back into place.  Might need a general rather than a local because critters can't understand "Stay still a moment, then it'll be fine as soon as the swelling goes down."

Hi, sweetie! How are you feeling today? Better, I hope - hang in there, cuz we're hoping and wishing for you, fam. Do you need anything?

Anxiety is through the roof and coughing is still very frequent during the day.  So, hanging in there.

Has anyone had an update from DLC?

Thanks for that...
I'm trying to talk myself out of one or two that I found.

But why?
They're good deals!

I know, you are right. Just that I am trying to rely on the library more these days than spending more $

Makes sense..although I betcha if there was one you really wanted, it could be bought, and then passed around to other Caturdites who might be interested. I'm thinking about making a "Staff shelf" in the library so that us adults can swap out books!

I got out my saws-all and cut that MF down. Naturally, it fell on me as it came down. It should have been a 2 man job but none of my neighbors were home or physically fit enough to help. So, I did it alone!

bobug: Djelibeybi: bobug: sherpa18: Meanwhile, I had to have more medical tests/xrays/blood work done today, and I went back to the lab that did my last blood draw (as I was so impressed that I could not even find a blood drop on my arm the next day I went to shower, much less a black&blue or hematoma).

Transfusions, chemo treatment (also used on AIHA), high doses of steroids, more blood draws than you want to know, and
