I'm a transplant too.  Born in South Jersey, lived all over the country. *waves*

What exit?  (6 was mine.)

My mister and I also lived in NC for a spell.  (Franklinton)  I worked at Edward McKay Used Books and More when there still was one in Raleigh.

apotheosis27: Today is the heaviest of Caturdays for my family.  We have to say goodbye to our beautiful Lucy.  She's been my partner in crime for 12 wonderful years (including a couple of years in Australia!) but her kidneys have finally given up.  Have a vet coming to do the final house call today.  She'll be basking in the afternoon sun.  I'm going to miss her so much.  She's getting non-stop cuddles today.

I, too, shall light a candle for Lucy.
It rips your heart out to let them go, but it is even worse watching them suffer.
In love we help then cross the Bridge.

Well,I have mad respect for you. What you are doing is no doubt making a difference in a situation that a lot of people don't know about despite how important the Monarchs are.

If you ever need any supplies that I can keep an eye out for, just pass along that info.

Thank you.  I will keep the offer in mind.

I myself was shocked when I first learned how low their survival rate has sunk in the wild.  It's what keeps me going, even when it's pouring rain outside and I have to go cut fresh leaves.

Oh!  I forgot to mention in my last post that the fifth instar is indeed in J as of this morning, the next step towards transforming to chrysalis.

Pic of a cat in J from 2019, in one of the keepers my MiL bought me.  They will curl a bit tighter if they are disturbed, like when I opened the keeper to take the picture.  Normally the J is a bit more open just like the letter.:

How do you tell if a kitten is m or f? All I see when it turns around is a butthole.

Why do cats always like to show off their butthole?

bobug: sherpa18: Meanwhile, I had to have more medical tests/xrays/blood work done today, and I went back to the lab that did my last blood draw (as I was so impressed that I could not even find a blood drop on my arm the next day I went to shower, much less a black&blue or hematoma).

I had the same tech today, and when I got done complimenting her on her skills as she prepared to get my blood, she just stared at me and said I jinxed her.

Sure enough, she was right, she couldn't get blood to draw from her first stick in my left arm, and had to go to my right arm (hence why I have gauze/bandages on both arms right now). She was still good with the second stick, would definitely go back again :o)

[Fark user image 340x499]

When I was first diagnosed with Autoimmune hemolytic anemia, I had blood draws two to four times a day (They lined vials up down my leg, no kidding). They blew two dozen veins while I was in the ICU. Half didn't come back. I moved to daily, then semi-weekly, then weekly, then biweekly... Now, I am FINALLY at 3 months. My poor elbows look like I was a heroin user. Scarred to all hell.

Long story short, I feel you, and sympathize.

Damn, girl - that had to be awful. Autoimmune diseases are so lame - I mean, it's your own body attacking itself. It's like being a dog who can't be satisfied with catching its own tail but is crazy convinced it must be destroyed - it's just, like WTF? (Please tell me they didn't have to get a sample of your bone marrow...*shudders*)

Transfusions, chemo treatment (also used on AIHA), high doses of steroids, more blood draws than you want to know, and, a year later, a splenectomy. I still have my graphed out results for every CBC, with trend lines, averages, variances, and so on. It wasn't awful... I lived. It could have easily gone a different way. I walked out of the doctor's office on Monday, feeling horrible and nauseated and exhausted. My hand on the knob to the lobby, and I said "I haven't felt right for five months. I keep coming, and just do not feel right." The doc finally did a blood draw. I was in the ICU 14 hours later, with a hemoglobin of 5.1. Down to 4.0 before the first transfusions. I had to sign a paper agreeing that it would probably kill me. I didn't tell Mr. Bobug. If it did kill me, I didn't want me dying in agony to be the last time he saw me. Man, was he pissed at me.

Spleens go by the 1357911 mnemonic ... 1x3x5 inches, weighing 7 oz, between the 9th and 11th ribs. Spleenzilla took up two ultrasound images. My nausea was from a grossly swollen spleen squishing my guts. After a year of steroids, it was reduced to "only" 4x8x14 inches... Weighing a few pounds. Bastard. He just wanted to go to the fashion shows in Milan. I am alive, reasonably healthy, and able to do much less extreme things to peeve Mr. Bobug. I am so lucky and thankful. I was one pause and 'just do not feel right' away from dying. ICU said it was a miracle I didn't stroke out or have a heart attack.  😊

Bobug
that is insane! That's a journey rather not taken. I'm glad you recovered and that Mr Bobug wasn't heartbroken! I cannot even imagine the courage something like that takes to get through. Although I bet you were too sick to consider any other way than ahead

When I got home from the hospital, two of my cats perched by each arm, cleaning me for hours. They were so sweet. With enough skin grafts, what they cleaned off eventually grew back :)

I like that. Actually, part of why I felt like a poser was that I KNEW intellectually that I was sick, but I wasn't in extreme pain, had no open wounds, couldn't see anything wrong, and still had my mind and humor running full tilt. That first day was terrifying. The ER doc looked at my husband and berated him "Couldn't you see how pale she was? Don't you care?" I pointed to him and said "Get out, now, and do not come back." Mr. Bobug was in tears. I've ALWAYS been pale (curse you, Scotts-Irish ancestry!) Then, when the blood kept hemolyzing before they could get it to the lab (they ended up carrying it on a pillow, so it didn't get broken up), and one of the techs said, in the hallway "Her blood looks like it went through a blender", yeah, I got a bit scared. But... he was my concern. If I was going to kick it, it was going to happen. There was nothing I could do to control that. I could, however, control other things. How I acted (they were doing their jobs, drawing blood. I wasn't going to yell at six sets of blood tests in 4 hours, and half a dozen blown veins), whether I looked at it as "the end" or "I'm not done yet." And so on.

Life's about what we choose, about the events we control. :) It's all good, though. I got a bunch of cool new stomach scars, I look like a former junkie, and I get to go in for the early hours shopping, since I'm immunocompromised :)

AND Djeli is going to let me win on helping people, because she thinks I'm cute and fluffy and underestimates me :)

Just about every pet I've ever had was a stray or a rescue I inherited. Now it seems I'm looking after a morning dove. It took up residence on our front walk yesterday. It looks fully grown and it doesn't appear to be injured. It even flapped its wings to hop up on the front step so theoretically it could fly if it wanted to. Its behavior is somewhat peculiar in that it doesn't flinch when people get close to it. I put out some food and water for it and it seemed to perk up a bit after that. It took shelter in the bushes overnight but it's still out there this morning. It's more active today so apparently doing well but not inclined to move on yet.

Proxy Puss update:

Went up to mom's yesterday, and I got to pet all three of the orange Jinglebutt triplets... A rare trifecta! I'm used to seeing the two brothers, but Ariana the tiny adorable everkitten and rub-slut usually stays close to her nominal home next door. I think she was there visiting her big beefy brother Simba, he evidently tangled with a gigantic raccoon and is a bit gimpy in one leg. He's been hiding on mom's screened-in porch where enormous raccoons can't fit through the kitty door and the crazy cat lady provides endless kibble dishes. I also got to pet Sammy (the owner of the house) and got to see little-black-feral guy.

So all in all, a good cat day.

2020-08-22 12:09:13 PM
I had to deburr a kitty after he came home in the wee hours of morning. It was cool enough and I've got the bigger kitty door in use so silly paws was outfitted with his GPS again.

It's too bad the shared image doesn't include the heat map. Just imagine a really big red blob in the center and two dark orange blobs on those two far points. No idea what he likes over there so much.... Hasn't been wandering that far afield in a while - apparently cool temps are the trigger.
