Snuffybud:
I feel sorry for you.  I live within 5 miles of 4 different Wegmans, 1 is within walking distance.

My mom lives within five miles of three Wegmans.  But I've probably whined about that here once or twice.

lilyleftthevalley: Sadly, the last hand me down camera is now acting up worse than prior (it's a low grade to begin with).  So no new Monarch or kitty shots from me until I save up for something because all the indoor shots are...weird, to say the least.  And not in a fun way, just in a "did you sneeze when you took the picture?" sort of way.

Our worst flea season ever is finally getting a bit better.  Poor Lady Sylvie often looks like a shaved straight haired poodle that triumphed in a death match pit, she's been chewing and over cleaning so much.  She also has been iffy about combings and wipe downs.  I can only do it for ten minutes at a time max before she fusses and runs away if she even lets me.  =(

The boys have been mostly ok since the first burst caught us by surprise, but they're both black with multiple coats and she's white with a single long coat, and I've actually seen them leap from the boys to her if she's nearby.  She's fine the first two weeks after the topical, then it starts all over again and it's too risky to overdose her by doing another early.  I'm still dusting the floors with baking soda, which has been helping  (We have hardwood throughout, so they fall/hide in the cracks).  I already put a steam cleaner into next year's budget, as the little one I have for clothes apparently just ain't doing enough.  I never want to have her go through this again.

On the other cat front, we currently have four in chrysalis in one keeper.  In another keeper, one fifth instar is scouting--so likely will be in chrysalis soon.  I moved a now fourth instar to the keeper the single fifth is in, and the last Monarch cat just turned third instar.  I have found no new eggs since last I wrote, so the current third will be our last for this year.

The good news is out of the second clatch, so far ZERO deaths.  It's a bitter relief, because as I've mentioned, even my first year I did better than this year.  I know part of it is the low overwinter count + erratic weather, so I'm taki ...

I never cease to be amazed at how you do all this. It's fantastic. I would love to see your entire set up -- you may have shown some of it in the past, but I can't recall. You have plenty of other things to take up your time right now.
Are you looking at getting one of those bare floor steam cleaner type things?

Morning!

2020-08-22 7:19:13 AM

lilyleftthevalley: Snuffybud: lilyleftthevalley: Snuffybud: I can get it at both Wegmans and at BJ's.

I envy you.  The closest Wegmans is a bit further than we're willing to drive for groceries, and totally into heavier traffic area to boot.  I really miss that store.

If things ever go back to near the old normal, we may stop by on the way back from a trip to Boston.  (We used to do that when we lived in another state and one of my inlaws lived near one.)

If you don't know there are lots of Wegmans near Boston now.  They have stores in Burlington, Chestnut Hill, Medford, Natick, Northborough, and Westwood.

/lifted the locations from their website

We're in the "There be Dragons" area of MA (aka north central).  Our small city is actually listed as a food desert, and we pay more for groceries than any other city in MA.  The "closest" Wegmans to us is Northborough.

We used to have a Stop n' Shop when we first moved here, but they had to close it down shortly after we moved because we also have a Hannaford's.  Now they're owned by the same company so anti-competition something-or-other-excuse, but our Hannaford's is teeny tiny and mostly caters to the urban poor than, say, the Hannaford's just over the border in NH.  I forget which chain took over the Price Chopper for a short while, but they didn't even last a year.  There's a Tractor Supply there now.

Our only other alternative is a Price Chopper, which recently converted an entire aisle to alcohol, which further cut down offerings even before the still empty shelf problems of the Pandemic panic buyers.  (Yes, there were no paper towels just this week.  It's still a problem here.)  Oh, and Wallyworld, but...we don't go there if we can help it.  Especially since the pandemic.  (Politically speaking, we're a purple town).

Oh hai fellow Masshole!
I grew up on the northshore (Wakefield).  I'm transplanted to providence R.I. these days though.

Firstly, I'm not employed full time (and this year not even part).  That makes a huge difference.  I also lucked into finding a Guardian mentor which helps loads.  Having extra time to research, especially when things go sideways also helps.

Secondly, Monarch season here in MA only lasts roughly two months of the year.  If I had to do this all the time like some folks farther south, I'd go mad trying to fit it in.  *Thinks of the pile of dirty dishes currently in the kitchen.*  And my numbers even at my best year are nothing compared to some Guardians also in MA.  They release hundreds!  I have mad respect for them.  I had a hard enough time keeping up with 54 last year, and mostly managed thanks to a neighbor that didn't mow their lawn dotted with milkweed for a few weeks when I asked and explained why so I could both find more and feed more--otherwise I would have run out of milkweed!  We planted more for this year which sadly, we did not "need".  I'm hoping this is just a lull year and next year our patches are showing an upswing.

We are a very limited budget household (bought a fixer upper), and my set ups reflect that.  You've probably already seen the various things in part that I've used/adapted or was gifted over the last three years in my other Caturday posts.  (My MiL bought me the modern mesh butterfly keepers after she learned I was trying my hand at Guardianship which really came in handy for year two.)

I do have more Guardianship images on my Garden site if you look at just the Monarch Guardian posts.  There's even a how to for the mason jar milkweed stem holders I made for the larger keepers.  As you'll notice, I'm still learning and adapting as I go (though there are not many posts from this year because 2020 has been, well...2020.)

One thing that's new this year is mid way I started repurposing KFC/Taco Bell bowls (the ones that are black plastic on the base, and clear top) for first through just hitting fourth instar (when they hit fourth, I put them in one of the larger keepers).  Turns out an unbleached coffee filter fits in them perfectly, and with rare exception they cats tend to stay on the inside of it if they wander off their leaves.  Clean up has been a lot easier than the usual paper towel method for the early stages.  I still use them for the larger keepers, though.  I never did transition to old dish towels that could be rewashed, though I do compost the paper towels.

Thirdly, as to the steam cleaner, I can't afford the pro grade steam mop, but I did find a smaller steam unit that has good reviews, and has a bigger water chamber for longer duration use that I can use more overall for both cleaning and restoration work here.  (Full Disclosure: I am not a tidy lady.  We even have a trivet that says "Come in, sit down, relax, converse.  Our house doesn't always look like this, sometimes it's even worse.")

Oooo!  The dying camera cooperated!  Oggers, on a towel next to my office chair just now. (Towels help catch the flea dirt, then I wash them once a week or more if needed.)

Our neighbor kitty has adopted us. We found out that her name is not Mystic but that his name is Magic. A sweetie. Comes by for food. Sometimes we have lovefests. Our tile floor has been quite popular during the heat spell. mrs edmo had a headache this week so she took a nap. Magic thought that was great idea and joined her just to help out. We've been redoing landscaping and planting on the north side of the house. Magic likes to "help" by climbing in the holes or laying across the area we're working on.

I've been sick as a dog since Moansday.  Fever, chills, sweats, headache, extreme stomach ache.  Since Tuesday night I haven't had any solid food or slept more than an hour at a time.
