Eddie is the undisputed winner. He was making bank ($10K/episode) and literally everyone loved him. Even Frasier, though he tried to hide it (like his love of Martin's chair).

But you didn't have better things to do than tell us you have better things to do.  Weird.

And the answer, obviously, is Seymour.

I'm old.  It is Lassie which I see the author wasn't old enough to include.

This is going to be some fun generation gaps where so much content is being made that no one can keep up with it so lists like this become more and more subjective over time.

Also fook this article's artists, they clearly say snoopy and other already "legendary" known dogs won't be counted.
Dumb fook no brain design to  have snoppy be shown at all , let alone first one up as if he really matters here. along with toto, Clifford and few of the other obviously disqualified dogs.

Lassie, with Rin-Tin-Tin a close second.

Unless you subscribe to the theory that 'If it didn't happen during my lifetime, *and* on TV or in the movies, it doesn't count'.

From real life, I nominate Seaman, Lewis & Clark's dog that saved their asses a couple times, and Pickles, the dog that recovered the stolen 1966 World Cup.

Lassie (TV and movies)
Rin Tin Tin (TV and movies) only to 1947, though.

Lassie, along with Rin Tin Tin and some others, was excluded for being "legendary", which I guess is fair enough.

Lassie (TV and movies)
Rin Tin Tin (TV and movies) only to 1947, though.

Lassie started out in print (the short story, then novel 'Lassie Come Home', 1940).

Rinty seems to have started in the movies (silent films), then moved to TV.  However, unlike Lassie, Rinty was a real dog, rescued from a WWI battlefield, and (at least in the beginning) played himself on screen.

No criticism of you intended - just throwing in stuff for any other Farkers here who might be curious.  I always like to encourage people to look beyond visual entertainment, and outside of their own lifetimes.
