AirBNB is a major reason why you have a housing shortage in every livable city in the country right now. Hell, in the world. I hope the pandemic puts them out of business.

The model's been proven, so even if they died more would spring up.

Yeah, that's why places like San Francisco have a huge affordable housing shortage.   It's the AirBNBs, not wealthy liberal snobs resisting affordable housing construction under the guise of preserving "historic" homes that are just a bit over 100 years old at the very most.

Meh...I'm a fan because it allowed me to travel overseas at a lower cost.  Hotels in Europe can be expensive, and it was great paying $70 per night in Munich during Oktoberfest.  And it wasn't an investment property....just renting a room, and the owner actually lived there.

Same thing for when I went to Nashville.  Paying $40 per night instead of $300+ for a hotel room was fantastic.

Can't help but think this is a CEO money grab for a company that's sinking.

AirBnB is a good choice for people that WANT to be an internet porn participant, but want to pay to have someone else deal with all the camera setup and uploading.

Models success is based on not following local laws.  Eventually, laws and enforcement will catch up.

Housing shortage existed before AirBNB, it just made it a bit worse and turn month/month rentals into day/day rentals.

Multiple factors:. Growth faster than industry; time to build up, not out; capitalistic nature of realestate valuation (developers build only with profit incentive, land sale, bank dont have all inventory for sale to keep market high).

It is a systemic issue for all over valued cities and property.

Ok, that's the economics class version

In my city, they can't approve building permits fast enough, so the money is to be made in buying an apartment in the city center and putting it on Airbnb immediately. Then people who were renting to long term tenants see they can make a lot more putting that on Airbnb. Meanwhile, the profitable apartment building still doesn't have a permit and prices go up an up.

Our place in a normal neighborhood with decent transport has doubled in value since 2014. Doesn't matter, though, because if we sell, everything is twice as expensive

I like the model when traveling with friends or family. It's like being at home in that you can cook and pregame and hangout instead of being stuck in a hotel room.

A friend of mine in San Jose runs one in his house. He spent a bunch of money renovating to give the two rooms their own full bathrooms. He is constantly booked with Adobe interns that are there for a couple months.
