It'd be nice to not have these kinds of designations. Black Americans are Americans. Let them flourish in all schools and in all communities.

It's a way of honoring perhaps the most important among the Historic Black College and Universities. Until other schools actually open their doors and level the ground to admit and foster black students, Howard and Morehouse will remain important to blacks in America, and beyond.

It would be, but for a long time that wasn't really a choice.  Thurgood Marshal went there for Law School after the U-MD law school (that now has the copper-clad gall to bear his name) refused to admit him because of his race, even after he sued him.  But Harvard did, and that in many ways was segregation's fatal mistake.   The dean of Howard's law school was quietly assembling a crack team of civil rights ninjas that he would soon unleash on America, and it was in his offices that those young lawyers and NAACP leaders mapped out the long and very strategic legal path that lead to  Brown v. Board(Did you know?  Topeka was chosen for the Brown challenge because it was one of the ONLY school districts in the US that took the "but equal"part of "separate but equal" seriously.  They wanted the court to overturn Plessy in its entirety, and they didn't want the court having an out, and ruling on the narrow grounds that the school systems weren't equal because they knew that would lead to them having to wage thousands of individual legal battles in every segregated school district in America arguing the "equality" of the facilities.  Justice Warren figured this out and obligingly included the line "separate is NEVER equal" in his ruling)

I think the best response to that came from the university president, who noted that at Howard you can be confident that it's strictly your performance being evaluated, and not your innate self. For a lot of bright, ambitious black kids, that is probably a refreshing change.

So, according to my very prejudiced friend, the Alpha frat is the best, founded at Howard.

Now there's another Alpha, sorority, also founded at Howard.   I'm impressed by the Alpha I know personally, and suspect I will continue to be impressed by this Alpha, as VP.   The country will be in very good hands.

I always thought just defaulting to African American was the stupidest way to handle it. For this exact reason.

Just say black. It's fine. Or their name, person, he, she. Whatever. Something concrete and objective. African American makes huge assumptions about someone based on the color of...oh whatever. fark it. I don't care. This is all so farking dumb.

It all comes down to Jim Crow.   Almost without exception you know when you meet somebody from Africa, as opposed to an African American, because their skin is actually BLACK as opposed to all the sahe of brown that we see in America.  And WHERE did all that color variation in America come from?   Why white people having sex with black people (or to be more specific raping them because it often wasn't a choice for the black participant)    So, now yo want to create a set fo laws to keep "black" people "in their place"  but, you have a pretty serious problem:  How do you define "black"?  There are a lot of  people you want to consider black who are lighter-skinned than the average Italian or Spaniard. (and some can "pass" completely)

So they sought to codify it at a time when the Eugenics movement was gaining steam in America and the whole "pure white race/master race" thing Hitler later embraced  was bubbling to the surface.   Since the goal was a "pure" race, anybody with ANY non-white blood was therefore Not White, and legally classified as such. (some states allowed 1/16th or 1/32 back into the fold of white folk)   and  while the laws are gone the cultural attitude persists

It matters because the whole "Kamala Harris isn't Black" attack on the right is not predicated on her rather obviously black genetic make-up, but rather that being Bi-racial and her father not being born in America, she somehow didn't REALLY have "the black experience" in America and therefore cannot claim the "African-American" mantle (which is stupid on its face, but that's no longer enough to dispatch an argument these days)

Pointing out that she matriculated at the institution that is THE epicenter of black culture in America, and pledged the oldest African American sorority in the US, very much puts paid to that "she didn't have the black experience" lie

Dafuq you even talking about?  Africa has an amazing variety of skin tones.  Everyone is not just a single color.  Skin color is an adaptation to differing amounts of direct sunlight.  And Africa is a big farking place, oriented with the north-south axis dominant, so it sweeps a variety of latitudes.  Xhosa vs San vs Yoruba vs Fula vs etc are not all the same damn Crayola crayon.

Yes, yes it would. See, Ms Harris' entire life is now under a microscope. The Progressive Left want to find something to prove she's a 'bad' person - support for police, refusal to prosecute certain people, not being 'really' black, not being 'really' Indian, not truly earning her current position etc.

The Trumpers are egging all of this on because they don't consider her a human being, and they really want to see the Progressive Left and the Centrist Democrats eat each other so that their Lord and Savior Donald Jesus Trump (Hamberders Be His Now and Forever) wins a second term.

It matters because it can be used to attack her, somehow.

I was a geographer for the 2010 census (for four years) in NYC, and am passionate about it. I 'volunteered' (getting paid) to be an enumerator here in the South. I find I have a better rapport w/ people that don't share the same demographics as I, then those that do.

Of course "genetic diversity is weird thing.  Two San tribesmen from villages about 10 miles apart are more genetically distinct than a Chinese person is from a British person.

Some theorize that they may be the only human group left on earth that is NOT descended from "the 200" , a clan or large family that began migrating out of Africa about 50,000 years ago and for reasons unknown displaced every other group of humans living on earth at the time as they spread across the globe
