Actually, isn't it a great "f*ck you" to the Nazis of long ago and the remaining hard-right, anti-semitic idiots in Europe for him to play there?

There were about 8,000 Jews living in Oswiecim when WWII began. Not the town's fault that it was the site of the camp.

Why would someone be upset about this? It would be like getting mad at Israelis for living in Jerusalem when the ancient Romans killed so many Jews there way back when.

Israel ranks 34th in the world for men's ice hockey

At first I was shocked that they were ranked that high. But when you look at who they're ahead of in the IIHF rankings it kind of makes sense. They ranked ahead of places like Mexico, North Korea, Turkmenistan, Hong Kong and Kuwait.

The ancient Romans didn't kill any.  Stop spreading that myth.

Next you're going to claim that the Holocaust actually happened.

This is just a strange comment because it's not particularly funny, and it seems you'd have to be quite ignorant to not understand the difference between a historical event which whittled many living peoples' family trees down to a minimum, and ancient historical events which don't bear any direct connection on any living person's life. And people that ignorant would not be aware of the historical connection between Jews and Rome. So I guess the commenter is merely being obtuse? But to what end?

I get confused when people think differently than I do.

Just get to the point.

So, because the town was where a foreign occupying government committed horrible generations before most if not all of its current population was born, they can't have a Jewish hockey player?

More seriously, the population of Oświęcim have a semi-justified reputation for barely tolerating the memorial to the immense crime against humanity next door, except to cash in on tourists coming through to visit it. It's not what they did during WWII that people object to, it's what they've been doing since communism fell.

oh the irony... i am the one who understood why the player feels ok to play there, but also why some people think he shouldn't. you seem to be the one with the problem understanding differences of opinion.
