The school district said the Westmoore High School student was asymptomatic and believed it was safe to attend the first day of classes.

This is the direct result of parents who teach their children that their beliefs are more valid than science.

farking conservatives, why do you think ignorance is a virtue?

And how is it possible that Orange Asshead still doesn't have it, yet never wears a mask? If he does come down with it, remember this:

CORRECTION (Aug. 16, 2020, 6:50 p.m. ET): An earlier version of this article referred to the student diagnosed with COVID-19 as "he." The student's name and gender have not been made public.

Did somebody assume that only a boy could be this stupid? How sexist!

Because masks do quite a lot to prevent spread, and not that much to prevent contraction.  To contract the virus you just have to touch something with your hands and then rub your eyes 10 minutes later.  The point of the mask is no one sneezes or coughs and leaves a little snot puddle to touch.

I think all of the blue states should get together and secede from the union. Now, I know that didn't work out for the last group of states that tried that but the north really needed the economic power of the south. Today that isn't true. The blue states combined have a greater GDP than the red states and if we call the new nation "Abortionland" the red states wouldn't even put up a fight.

Big whoop. There were probably at least 10 asymptotic (or borderline) kids attending spreading the wealth also. I just don't understand this insistence that "oh those other schools that had to shut down are different, we are special" attitude.

Tomorrow was supposed to be the first day of classes for us but that was postponed for a week.

Every teacher I have talked to thinks we will be shut down within a month. I agree but we will see. Maybe WE are the special ones.

Oh, trust me, I'm losing my mind being self-quarantined since March 6th. I think I'm going to quit my job in October and take a month long stay in either Turkey, UAE or whatever country allows Americans in, at that time.

I still don't know anyone who was infected or tested positive, much less know someone who died from it. I think the fact that so many people don't know anyone who got it makes it very easy to disregard it. I don't need to see a family member die from it before I take precautions but other people are more reactionary. Their thought process is more "If it isn't a problem for me, it isn't a problem".

That might explain people in certain areas, but it doesn't explain, say, people in places like on Fark who keep downplaying the school situation.  There are some people spinning some really nonsense that sounds really smart but isn't and trying to convince people/fool people into thinking that we're all overreacting.  Those people are scum, and they horrify me.

It's one thing to be pig-ignorant; it's another to know that you're lying, aware that your lies are killing people, and then just keep lying anyway.

This is a large part of the problem. Humans in general have a hard time processing "society" vs their much smaller directly connected groups which for most people are less than 150 people or so. Currently Covid-19 has killed ~ 1/1750 American residents. So it's entirely possible for people's bubbles to miss getting popped so far. That won't last forever of course but it'll be too late once the fickle finger of fate reaches out and starts cutting down your local peeps.

This could have all been offset with a) better education b) less of the "I'm special" society c) not having a culture built of distrust of government d) having a government that has earned said trust and d) solid, rational leadership

Sadly the Venn Diagram of those factors looks like this:

Because people don't punish them for it. Start punishing them and it'll happen less and less.

You should check how California's numbers are doing, considering they blew past Florida and have almost 2x the daily new cases Florida has.

You know the Cherokee County school system that had all the covid kids who got sick?  Republicans are actaully pushing around facebook memes claiming that since most of the kids did not get sick, that it is a media overreaction and that they should just go back to letting them infect kids.

Of course that is like saying since the majority of kids are not hit by bullets during a school shooting, school lockdowns during shootings are just the schools responding to the media that is over reacting to a few kids getting shot.

Every time someone points out that California or New York's economy would make them one of the richest countries in the world if they were counted separate from the rest of the country, I wonder two things.

First, how much would the US's economic rating go down compared to other developed countries, if you measured it's economic prosperity without those two states, and second, how each red state would fair if it were compared to the rest of the world.

I do not think very many red states, other than natural research rich Texas, or Florida would do all that well.  A few, Oklahoma, Arkansas, ext I could see having developing world economic status.

Then I think of the ones, that would collapse if they did not have help coming in from the rest of the country.

What is even more ironic, is that all the white people in the Florida Panhandle basically live like a third world country, very wealthy economic elite propped up massive population of working poor who live in squalor, and their plight is hidden because of how well Miami is doing.
