But at least he didn't send a team of investigators to Oakland...

As do you. Those four have had their "natural born" status questioned when they ran for president. None are black. All are natural born. So the idea that anyone questioning Harris' status is questioning it solely because she is black is absurd. It was even suggested that Arnold Schwarzenegger should run, but he conceded that he is not eligible. He ain't black either. Racism has nothing to do with it.

edmo: Pretty sure he means FOXNews.

Nope. Pretty sure he means all the goddamned media. Nobody was holding CNN hostage, and making them broadcast a split screen of Hillary Clinton speaking at a campaign rally on the left, and an empty podium awaiting Donald Trump's arrival on the other.

Fox news is open about their agenda. They know they can show, and say whatever they want, because they will be counteracted by the "good guys." They know they will eventually be held accountable for their actions. But they will keep throwing haymakers until they are dragged out of the ring, kicking and screaming. They exist to be boorish, contrary and crude. They are the asshole instigators, the "just asking questions!" brigade, that constantly seeks validation through bad badmouthing their supposed "enemies."

But CNN, and yes, even MSNBC for a little bit, engaged in the same type of fawning. They practically stepped over bodies to fill the camera frame with Trump and his old man shuffle. Because he said the quiet part out loud. He's shocking, provocative, a devil's advocate, that knows how to work a camera. They didn't care that he'd end up being a clusterfark of a president because they were too aloof to consider otherwise. Besides, their jobs were safe. They'd been covering politics for years. Outliers like Trump didn't have a shot in hell of actually joining the political elite.

Trump pulls in great ratings, and making fun of him was just too much fun for the American media. For some reason, they thought the rest of America was laughing right along with them. Sadly, most of us never thought he'd be a  serious contender. He had no political experience, and a bad reputation as being a two bit com artist. How the fark do you go from realty television star to leader of the free world?

One thing he did shine a spotlight on was what the fark exactly was going on with our federal government? What are they doing?  Why do we have high obesity, and drug overdose rates?  Why is our health insurance so expensive? Why are our kids struggling in schools? Why can't our grown kids afford their own house?

Economic insecurity has it's good and bad implications, but for the "presidentialy privileged" average white person, what the hell else was there to worry about? They weren't being dragged out of their cars, and shot and killed by racist police officers. No bakery ever told them they can't make a cake for them, because their future spouse was an abomination in the eyes of God. What the fark were they wringing they hands about, considering every other American was going through almost exactly the same thing?

Never entertain fools. That gives them your attention, and thus, power over you. And we can't change the past, because if we could, I'd have stayed thin, and wore my bra more often than I did. But I will never forget how hard every news network worked to feed into his ego. He was all anyone could talk about, because what the fark else is there to talk about? Our kids can't find work, the planet is warming, and our corporate bosses treat us like shiat. Anything has to be better than this stress and tedium. Why not shake things up a bit with how our federal government runs things? They hate us anyway right? Surely someone not a part of the establishment has the answers to how we can stick it to the establishment!

Long and short of it is, a lot of people are to blame, but the guardians, the gatekeepers, the constitutionally recognized fourth estate, fell down hard on this. If the pandemic hadn't happened, I farking guarantee Trump would sail into a second term just as easy as Bush Jr. did. Because for a while there, we didn't want change in this country. We just wanted to find creative ways to fark the other guy over. Money, healthcare, housing, it doesn't matter. Someone below us is enjoying the perks of living in a first world country, and we'll have none of that! They need to suffer so that we can feel accomplished and successful. It's been one of the longest running, most specific form of a caste system in every definition of the word. And America is damn good at it.

Literally nobody ever seriously questioned McCain's legitimacy. It was essentially read by "the media" as an interesting piece of trivia. They didn't say "Is McCain eligible?" they said "Here is why McCain is eligible."

Meanwhile, for Kamala Harris and Barack Obama, the right-wing rather swiftly went from "Are they eligible?" to "They're illegal immigrants and possibly terrorists. They hate America and want to turn it into a Communist dictatorship and end freedom." In other words, they skipped right over questioning legitimacy to accusations of sedition. Nobody questioned Cruz's citizenship. Nobody questioned McCain's citizenship. But whatever whisper campaign is rockin' the Right these days went from "Here's an interesting constitutional question" to "He's the Manchurian candidate" in about two moves.

Trump's refusal to condem the idea tells us all we need to know. He won't actively pursue it, but he doesn't want to tell the conspiracy theorist and racist the truth. He loves feeding them red meat.

Given that corporations own the media, fully, the only principles genuinely adhered to is the bottom line, ultimately. And Trump was good for their collective bottom lines in 2016, and since. The country at large was secondary.
