i spent good "money" on rca and columbia house music subscriptions around that time. the buy 6 albums for one cent and mail back the monthly cards or buy 3 albums contracts. i bought trans by neil young and every single person who followed young and saw the cassette said wtf. the old i can't describe what porn is or a great painting but i know when i see it can be used on trans. it was a steaming pile of shiate.

Screaming for vengeance is my favorite priest album.

Since people are talking maiden too, somewhere in time is my favorite maiden album, but honestly I celebrate the whole catalog except for the 90's output.

Trans is an unrecognized masterpiece and one of Neil Young's greatest and most personal albums.

Sorry if it wasn't Crazy Horse enough for you. He was trying something different -- an earnest, heartfelt message to his autistic son, who only seemed to respond positively to the quirky sounds of synthesizers and vocoders.

Listen to it again and understand what he's trying to do. Who he's trying to reach.

Some people just can't apparently deal with their favorite metal bands growing up and deciding that they can't stay a thrash band while the band members are in their 30's and/or 40's (or, now, their 50's and 60's).

Or they could afford a lot more cocaine, resulting in crappy records?

Why the hell not stay with what you're good at? Slayer did it.  The Ramones did it.  Their fans turned up every night of their careers.

Not saying that straying from the style drastically hurt the legends of bands like priest or megadeth or metallica, but theres clear "skip these albums" sections in their discographies.

Jesus, I hate The Deftones, despite them all being cool guys from around the Sac scene. If your metal band has a turntable or a rapper, you're doing it wrong. Did Body Count have a DJ? No. Even Ice T knows turntables have no place in metal.

say what you want, but slipknot circa '00 was a breath of fresh air, like nothing else we had heard before.  Those were some awesome live shows when they toured on that first (first widely distributed) album.

Do you sometimes sit at home, you know... and you watch tv and and wonder what it would be like to have metal like, you know the Deftones or Korn.  Ain't no Ozzie and Geezer you know - where metal is Metal and your friends die from backstage OD's.  But you're posting on Fark.com, and fortunately...

Shiat ain't like that!

Because nothing is more pathetic than a 45 year old man hollering about the same shiat that he thought was cool and edgey when he was 16.

It show no growth, intelligence or maturity, and all it succeeds in doing is shiatting on his former legacy.

Maybe it's boring as fark to have to continually perform stuff that you wrote as an angst-filled 18-22yr old when you're a middle aged man who flew in a private jet to get to the show?

I'll fight that.  It was still aggressive. diabolous / divine intervention weren't classic, but they weren't exactly making something to attempt to become mainstream.

Same thing with god hates us all; some metalheads call that a nu metal album, which its the furthest thing from.

A few weeks ago, A Prison Song (System of a Down, Toxicity) came on in the shuffle. I bought that album 20 years ago, in high school. That shiat is still relevant, but that's b/c our whole society sucks, not necessarily that I'm pathetic. (I am pathetic, but for different reasons).

This album got flak too when it came out, but it's in my top 3 Maiden albums. Wasted Years and Stranger in a Strange land are worth the price of admission alone.

Even Kerry King has disowned Diabolus, publicly, several times, saying it was a mistake to try and ride the mainstream nu metal trend. There are better hills to die on.

Late 70s early 80s metal was my thing as a teen.
I loved the raw energy of metal at the time.
Then I ventured off into prog, jazz, and jam.
Tonight I've been inspired to check out my old favorites from back then, Priest, Maiden, Sabbath.
They sound quite polished and well produced now, listening to them on a nice sound system. Back in the day, we listened to them on a crap stereo turned up too loud. I think I'll add some of this stuff back into my playlist.

Not to get all genre-label on you, but Priest were never a thrash band. Turbo really came across as a change in sound to cash in on the glam metal bandwagon.

Also,

turbo was the first time out of 12 now that ive seen priest, and i was on the wall, 15 yrs old, best buddy, getting crushed, when the lights went out, like all out, all i could smell was massive cologne, i was thinking, holy shiat that dude is in front of me, hit the lights for out in the cold, and rob was like 6 feet directly in front of me, worth every minute.
vengeance was my all time favorite album, then defenders, steel, too, but i only knew a few tunes. they jammed for 2 hours, and the crowd was packed and nuts the whole time. what an education in metal.

i wouldnt say turbo was a mistake, id say it was reaching into the popular culture at the time, and seeing what happens,
truth is alot of us who'd never seen a priest show, became fans for life.

if you havent checked them out latley, id suggest :  battle cry, down in flames, evil never dies, rising from ruins

I wish someone would go back and clean up the original recording of Defenders.  I love that album, but God it sounds awful on a decent stereo.

"Turbo" isn't as good as some other Priest (but better than some like "Point of Entry" is basically a 1-2 song album). I enjoy it.

/has Steely Dan ever covered "Turbo Lover"?

Dickinson is great, but Maiden became sort of sterile and formulaic once he joined.   Dianno-Maiden had an edge to it in the song writing and in the sound that Dickinson-Maiden does not.

The sounds on Turbo were not created with keyboards, they were created with guitar synths.
