It was a bit weird but I've never heard a hardcore Priest fan get up in arms about it.

I liked it.  Yeah, it was no "British Steel", but the songs were good and memorable--and tended to mirror everything else put out around that time.  The eighties were a weird time when it came to music. Slick and overproduced was considered a good thing.

/"Out in the Cold" was teh awesome.

It fit in well with the times.  Sure you can look back 35ish years & nitpick but it rocked then & rocks now.

/not the best 80s album though

iron maiden incorprated synths around that time as well.  it was the 80s.

standards were pretty arbitrary around then for me and my 15 year old compatriots regarding what was 'gay' vs 'awesome'.  duran duran was fruity (makeup and odd fashion choices), priest and maiden were awesome, despite similar choices.  then we found out about rob halford and freddy mercury.  and found out about what duran duran were turning down.

odd times.

Some time in late 80s or early 90s some local magazine printed article about Seventh.. or Iron Maiden in general. Article had photo of guy squating with two album sleeves and 5 topless girls behind him, if one doesn't count painted on letters "i", "r", "o", "n", "m", "a", "i", "d", "e", and "n'

This. I was a huge Priest fan until British Steel and my interest dropped off quickly after that. The Point of Entry tour was terrible and I def. took a loing JP break after. Still don't really listen to 80s+ Priest.

I didn't care about the keyboards, it was the guitar sound on that album that I didn't like. Compared to Defenders of the Faith the guitars sounded really thin. Same with Painkiller, I know to a lot of people that is "the" Priest song but the guitar sound doesn't work for me.

Among my circle of friends people liked some of their songs but no one was a Judas Priest fan, at least not in the way that people were Iron Maiden fans or Rush fans. And Defenders of the Faith marked the 'meh' point where it seemed like their time was done. By the time Turbo Lover comes out most people had moved on, so there was no backlash that I saw. If someone had called Judas Priest sellouts when that album came out everyone else probably would have responded with "Wait, you still listen to Judas Priest?".

But when Turbo came out in '86, I think they really came into their own, commercially and artistically. The whole album has a clear, crisp sound, and a new sheen of consummate professionalism that really gives the songs a big boost. They've been compared to Black Sabbath, but I think Priest has a far more bitter, cynical sense of humor.

Somewhere In Time - Iron Maiden


This album got flak too when it came out, but it's in my top 3 Maiden albums. Wasted Years and Stranger in a Strange land are worth the price of admission alone.

This album got flak too when it came out, but it's in my top 3 Maiden albums. Wasted Years and Stranger in a Strange land are worth the price of admission alone.


I remember seeing an interview with them on MTV, they said they wanted to call Wasted Years "Golden Years" and my teenage brain went right to "Golden Showers" and now I can't hear the opening guitar riff without thinking about...

Their 70s guitar tone was very unique.  I think it sounds tight and mean with the treble rolled off and the natural tube overdrive.   By Painkiller the guitar tone sounded like every other metal band out there.  However the band had progressed well beyond the 70s musically and that album is so damn heavy it makes up for the generic tone.

When I was in 8th grade, this high school rocker chick was hanging out with us in the back of the bus. She was explaining to us younger rocker dudes that "some music is good for sex. But Judas Priest is for farking!!" I fell in love with her that day, but alas, guys her age had cars and jobs and money and I wasn't there yet. But I did buy a Turbo Lover shirt and wore it for her on the bus.

i spent good "money" on rca and columbia house music subscriptions around that time. the buy 6 albums for one cent and mail back the monthly cards or buy 3 albums contracts. i bought trans by neil young and every single person who followed young and saw the cassette said wtf. the old i can't describe what porn is or a great painting but i know when i see it can be used on trans. it was a steaming pile of shiate.
