I watched that thing years ago.  I can only remember that it was a pretty good spoof of dexter and it went way over the line, but purposefully, for the sake of the joke.

Obviously I don't want Harmon's work cancelled.  But last time this was in the news cycle I remember Harmon had called for other people's works to be cancelled for "offensive" crap as well.  So, live by the sword die by the sword.

The above sweeping generality is the exception to the rule.

GhostfacedFiddlah: "Rick and Morty fans":Rick and Morty :: "Gamers":Video Games

I hate that I enjoy these two things, but get lumped in with the 10% virulent, screaming assholes who dominate the online discourse.

As is usually the case with these kinds of things, I see about 1000% as many complaints about the fans as I do fans being assholes, despite the sites I read apparently being full of said fans and knowing several other IRL.

But maybe they're all on 4chan or something? Is that where these "X fans are toxic" impressions come from, like everything else bad on the Web?

And it's only "cancel culture" when liberals do it.

When conservatives do it, its "patriotic".

Does anyone remember the original cancel culture?
Which person from this still got "cancelled", and which one is the pope?

Seems like most people's "problem" with this whole phenomenon is that liberals are allowed to have morals and that's just not fair to the rape-normalizers, pedophiles, racists, and racism-normalizers in the world.

Like how dare you connect the actions and words of a person to a person! That's not fair!

Frederf: I mean, Schindler's List simulated the holocaust. Subject matter being unpleasant doesn't make it wrong. I can't find the video to actually watch but I'm guessing it's not especially redeeming but it wasn't a crime to make a skit and he's obviously proven that he can make acceptable television by whatever number of TV episodes in a row. This past mistake is apparently so far in the past that it's gone. He's not bringing it up or showing it now so I don't see the danger of harm going forward. Why care?

I'm not searching for the video on the work computer, but the video was of Dan Harmon playing some burglar, sneaking into somebody's home, finding a baby in a crib (not a real baby, mind you, but a plastic doll) and then he unzips his pants as if he were about to rape the baby.

The "joke", such as it is, was meant to be a parody of Dexter, saying that if it is fine to make a serial killer into a likable protagonist, why stop there? Why not make a series where the protagonist is a baby rapist.

Needless to say, the video was reviled by all. Dan Harmon has repeatedly apologized for it, acknowledging that it was in horrible taste. But Adult Swim has routinely been the target of outraged right-wingers to so they keep going back to that video to feed their outrage machine.

However, I don't care if you or anyone else likes Rick and Morty. What does that make me?

- The first episode is pretty bad.

- The first season isn't even very strong, with a couple exceptions.

- Season 2 is basically perfect.

- Seasons after that are a mix of great episodes and just OK ones.

red230: Rick and Morty is an edgy comedy, I'd imagine his previous works are in the same vein. The problem with that is you can't go back and retroactively get offended by something that you laughed at years ago but now you're upset about it since society has changes in the interim. The greatest comics walk right up to the edge but don't go over, but time changes and with that so do the edges. Take this skit for example, there's no way that some people wouldn't get offended now and I still think it's one of the funniest things I've ever seen on TV.[Youtube-video https://www.youtube.com/embed/fKIwj1TQmFs]

The ones that don't appeal to a general audience are "experimental". For example, in the episode "Never Ricking Morty", Harmon explained in an entertaining rhetoric his particular formula for story construction.

I love outsider stuff. And frankly, more of you should too.

And Rick and Morty are right on that edge (leaning towards the commercial side, of course). Yes: You're not going to get Star Wars level production quality on everything. But you're going to get brave adventurism. God bless, and carry on you independent film peoples!

I'd count some of the experimental S3 and S4 among the really good episodes (though not Never Ricking Morty, which I thought was underdeveloped). I just don't think damn near every episode sticks the landing in those like they do in S2. I didn't have that opinion until re-watching the whole thing in the lead-up to the last couple episodes of S4 coming out, but wow, they're really at top form in season 2.

Yes.

You can't make people talk about things unless they're legally compelled to in court.

Not sure what's complicated about that.

In Twitter cancel culture, the outrage is everything. It's purely performative, but like any live show, the actors feed off the audience. People aren't allowed to grow and evolve, they are exactly the way they were the moment they said a stupid thing.

Honest-to-god, reword it a little and this article sounds like Rick's BS excuse for raping a baby doll in an internet video, and why you're the bad guy for holding him accountable.

SUMMER: This shiat came up on my Facebook feed! I don't need to see that at breakfast!

RICK: Cancel culture, Summer, you're canceling me. It's an ugly thing. *BELCH!* People are so... People are so quick to get offended! This is quality television right here. I always apologized for the baby doll. *pulls up video with an "I'm sorry if you were offended" followed by the rape of a more innocuous object, like a rubber duck* I've matured... I've matured as a person since then! So technically YOU'RE the asshole for bringing this up.

SUMMER: People are raping dolls and talking about you all over Twitter! These guys in Latvia have a YouTube channel where they rape different things! They call it a RickRape! They have over a thousand subscribers! Your actions have consequences, Grandpa!

RICK: Stop canceling me, Summer.

SUMMER: GRANDPA!

RICK (walking away) : CANCEL-CULTURE RICK, Y'ALL!

See, it's perfectly okay to like Rick and Morty, but Rick is supposed to be a horrible human being. He's funny but, dude. Don't be Rick. Hell, even RICK doesn't wanna be Rick!

The main difference is that bullying is real and "cancel culture" is conservative persecution fantasy.

Beyond that, "cancel culture" insofar as the conservatives are convinced it is a real thing, is about responding to your shiatty behaviour and people saying they don't want to be associated with you anymore.
