Rick and Morty is an edgy comedy, I'd imagine his previous works are in the same vein. The problem with that is you can't go back and retroactively get offended by something that you laughed at years ago but now you're upset about it since society has changes in the interim. The greatest comics walk right up to the edge but don't go over, but time changes and with that so do the edges. Take this skit for example, there's no way that some people wouldn't get offended now and I still think it's one of the funniest things I've ever seen on TV.

I really don't care about this one way or the other, but I think that him "not wanting to revisit it" doesn't amount shiat. It's not really up to him.

Of course it is.

What are they going to do, hold a gun to his email and say, "ADDRESS THIS!"

Do you people who have done questionable things can just wave off criticism by saying I'm not interested in revisiting it?

It seems to me if "people" are making noise about something, but the first I hear of that noise is someone indignantly declaring "can you beleave all these people making noise" I get to ignore both. I can just assume it's a case of hyperbolic outrage over someone else's hyperbolic outrage, and the only people it will help is the ones who will deflect from their actually outrageous acts with "see cancel culture is bad".

A friend of mine actually works as an editor on the show from Atlanta (as well as a few other shows like Squidbillies, as he works for Adult Swim) - I was bored and asked him about this so-called controversy and if Williams Street was planning to do anything in regards to it.

He laughed.

Yup.

There's no real criticism here. Last time around people made noise about this it wasn't really about the skit. It was about Nazis being upset Harmon called them Nazis and they tried to find something to get him with. And it amounted to nothing because there was no real issue. This is just Qanon discovering that old campaign and being too stupid to see it was never a real issue.

#savethechildren is a QAnon thing disguised as a canard to point out to MRA-types how liberal cancel culture has gotten out of control in the US.

In short, #derpception.

It'll be canceled when it's no longer commercially viable. Damn you libs!

2020-08-14 1:54:32 PM
I didn't watch it all the way, possibly NSFW? Still, it didn't look anything like Rick and Morty. You'll have to google it... Fark didn't like the link to biatchute - Dan Harmon's "Daryl"

Have these cancel culture bozos looked at the original Rick and Morty pilot?

Seriously, though, there is pretty obvious line on these things, and crossing that line today are a lot of morons, and worse, some are agents provocateur who are pushing this nonsense to get the knee jerk response (people who only see black and white). It's a product of the divisive extremism we see in politics today, and practice mostly pushed by the alt-right (though there is a small group of extremists on the left, the share is much larger on the right).

I mean, Schindler's List simulated the holocaust. Subject matter being unpleasant doesn't make it wrong. I can't find the video to actually watch but I'm guessing it's not especially redeeming but it wasn't a crime to make a skit and he's obviously proven that he can make acceptable television by whatever number of TV episodes in a row. This past mistake is apparently so far in the past that it's gone. He's not bringing it up or showing it now so I don't see the danger of harm going forward. Why care?

As an adult, I can manage to like stuff like Rick & Morty, Star Wars, the Marvel movies, etc, without becoming an obsessive stalker-fan or arguing pointlessly forever online about them.

I wish everyone else were the same.

Obsessive fandom itself is often toxic to both the work it's participants profess to love and their own lives. We've got millions of grown adults blowing huge cash on toys & figurines from these commercial franchises. It's bizarre to me. Men in their 30's/40's with full stormtrooper regalia and no money to buy their own home. It's culturally unhealthy.

I don't think I've ever been so physically nauseated by a film.  It's really a sight to behold.

2020-08-14 2:32:30 PM

mpirooz: If you are a Rick and Morty fan, there's probably next to nothing that will offend you - at least when it comes to dark humor.

I mean, I wouldn't call myself a "fan" per-se, but I like the show, but I'm frequently offended by humor, dark or otherwise. Mostly when it's lazy, hackneyed, an uninspired. You can get away with just about anything if you're funny, but a lot of people seem to confuse "causing offense" for "being funny". It's the difference between a comedian throwing a "fark" in every other word for no real purpose, and the famous "fark" scene from The Wire.

Now, my reaction to being offended is mostly just to ignore the source of offense. Which, I suppose, means I've cancelled a lot of people.

Whenever the term "cancel culture" comes up there's a really good chance someone is deeply offended that something they like way too much got mildly criticized. It has become another safe word for intellectually stunted adults.

It was announced yesterday that Blazing Saddles on HBO had a disclaimer put in front of it because of racist themes.  I don't believe Blazing Saddles too anything too far because most of it isn't "edgy" in the traditional sense(it merely acknowledges unfortunate realities), yet here were are.
