defund education and denounce intellectualism for 50 years, and this is what you get.

It's not good that a Democrat is polling that poorly among those without college degrees. Democrats need to be the party of working people, not just the professional class.

If you know a teacher, go out of your way to support them including critical thinking exercises, books that reflect diversity, etc. in their curriculum. The earlier the better. Support Teachers! Support Teachers Unions!

They are the party of working people; they've just done a piss-poor job of communicating that fact. Of course it doesn't help that these folks get their "news" from Fox.

Where is the "Trump polls 100% among anyone with an 8th grade education" headline?

They are the party of working people- but *whites* without a degree (subgroup of the working class) are so far into MAGA-ville via Fox News and AM right-wing pundits that this isn't really surprising.

Whites without a college education are doing the jobs no American wants to do: voting for Donnie.

You're right, they are the party of working people. But many working people don't vote for their self interest. Or anybody's self interest for that matter. They believe the propaganda and are told to be scared of, well, lots of things and the right wing that told you all this stuff to be scared of are the only ones that can help you.

I was in a store the other day and they had a fat redneck couple, both wearing Drain the Swamp tshirts and Trump 2020 masks.

They had two little kids in their cart.

Kids had no masks

The clerk said "Why aren't your children wearing masks?"

The Answer "The president said that kids are not in danger, and we believe him".

True.

What we're finding out is that there are a lot of working class voters that find it much easier to blame a single political party for their troubles (even though said party has actually been the ones trying to help them).  A group of voters that would rather that their bigotry, misogyny, and rank hatred of anyone not like them direct how they'll vote (and they vote for the people that will actively hurt the groups they hate).

Yeah, it's no wonder that so many non college educated are willing to throw their votes away on people that will be sure to screw them over at every turn. Because they've bought into the bullsh*t they've been fed by the right wing noise machine for the last 4 decades and they're too goddamned proud of that fact to ever change their minds.

A college degree does not grant one common sense or the ability to make good decisions. As demonstrated here, over a third of people who did not complete a college degree have no problem making rational choices to benefit themselves and their communities.

Republican a treat these people like they want to be treated. As temporarily impoverished billionaires. Whereas Democrats want to improve the situation for those filthy perna-poors.

"@bryanflork Replying to @JohnJHarwood
We need to make college more affordable: Exhibit A"

Making college affordable is not going to change the mind-set of people who aren't interested in going to college. They weren't interested in learning in high school, and wouldn't benefit from college. Poorly educated is a symptom of other problems.

Or another way to put it: If we make college affordable, does that make someone automatically qualify for entrance requirements? No, it does not. Your 12 ACT or 700 SAT doesn't get better if college is free.

Dumb people will always exist. I kinda feel like we haven't done a whole lot of research into how public schools can take a dumb person and make them smarter. "Teach critical thinking" doesn't work when the kids don't have basic thinking down. If you're looking for a masters or doctoral topic, this is a good area to start.

Yes, this.  But I really think the tipping point was W Bush, though. Nixon and (gasp) Reagan (!) came off as too intellectual for the Trump/Tea Party/Freedom Caucus/Qanon stooges of today.
I can't believe that I'm actually making the argument that REAGAN comes off like an intellectual. THATS how far we've fallen.

The idea that only poorly educated "white trash" are the white people voting for him is stupid and people should stop saying it. If the only people who vote Republican were Lurleen and Cletus, he couldn't have won.

He has (or had, I guess we'll find out) plenty of support in the affluent suburbs and among rich people in every area of the country. Just because they don't (as often) volunteer how much they LOVE him, don't appear on camera saying it or allow themselves to be quoted in the many "idiots tell us why they think President Tiny Dick Daughterfarker is great" stories doesn't mean that support doesn't exist. It does.

They're worse than the poorly educated idiots. They have the money and influence. They're the ones who tell the poorly educated idiots what to think. Much of politics is "aspirational," just like which cola or car to buy.

College degree is the deliminator.  What if it broke down by high school graduation or even completing middle school?  Certainly race is more of a factor than education in Trump's support as well.

2020-08-14 11:09:30 AM
If you think this means that only stupid people fall for Trump, you're the one who's stupid despite your superior attitude. This is telling us that there are no longer any decent opportunities for HS-educated Americans, and the Democrats are getting blamed.

That's true as well.

I would argue that the 30% of his cultists that will willingly support Trump without question are more than likely those who either never went past middle school or dropped out of high school.

Which explains the reasoning behind why the Republicans have actively been sabotaging public education since at least the Reagan years.

This. The idea that Democrats should try to appeal to these morons is stupid. Hillary Clinton at least respected them enough to tell them the truth, and typically, many of them told her to go fark herself, "We'd rather hear comforting lies."

And look where it got them. I bet they feel really good about their votes now. If they do, there is no reaching them. And if they don't, they know where to come next. Most Democrats are not wealthy. And plenty of them are "white trash." Some of them are capable of voting in their best interests.

A college degree these days is the equivalent of a high school diploma 40 years ago. These are the working people.

I'm not surprised.  Republicans tell them that they're better than everyone else while liberals are telling them to go to college and move to where jobs are.

Don't wanna shock you, but the working class is largely the educated class nowadays. Bachelor degrees don't rocket you out of lower middle or middle immediately like they used to.

Yes,I do. Programs, such as Medicare for all, which make everyone's lives better, for example. You propose and enact programs that make people's lives better. It's actually pretty simple.

On paper, I see your point. In practicality, appealing to racist QAnon morons is a bad thing and no candidates for office should attempt it.
