All of those people remind me of Ainsley Hayes from The West Wing, getting hired to work at the White House and thinking they were being asked to serve the nation in an honorable way, regardless of politics.

... Except they finally realized that they were expected to become part of a coterie of stooges that only serve the demented ego of a complete failure in everything he ever did.

Ainsley Hayes wanted to serve her country, and realized it didn't barter if her politics differed. She also acknowledged that, even if she disagreed with them, the Democrats she worked with were dedicated, righteous people who were also seeking to serve their country.

The people who do work for Trump are f*cking grifters who want power and prestige.  They know how stupid and malignant he is, but they don't care as long as they can get in on the grift. They think they are smarter than everyone who came before and can succeed in controlling him and sidelining him.

Not at all comparable.

Rex "Rosneft" Tillerson? Thinking he was going to serve honourably? Mattis, who said feck-all until he was out? Kelly? Steve feckin' terrorist camps in Europe Bannon? And Bolton. Yes Kelley, look at his time at ICE, he believes America is under attack on the Southern Border

Well, if not outright knew they had to at least suspect he was a corrupt moron. I mean, let's be honest, the Senate Rethuglicans just didn't give a shiat because he was giving them what they wanted as well. The Evangelicals? They don't care he's probably the least religious president we've ever had, he gives them the judges so they sell their souls to back him.

Yeah, Kelly is who I was going to comment on. For some reason, everyone looked at him like the 'adult in the room.' He was supposed to be the level headed, moderating influence on Trump. But the fact is, he specifically signed on to the Trump administration so he could crack some brown skulls with ICE. He's a true believer. He knew what Trump was all along. And he liked it.

The most crushing thing about the Rex Tillerson comment is that it wasn't an off-the-cuff comment.

It came after a Pentagon meeting in which the President had just called Afghanistan a "loser" war and savaged his top military brass for being "dopes and babies". That was in 2017 and it shattered any hope the hardcore optimists had of him "pivoting".

I do too, because I live here.

But a lot of us are concluding that at least one third of this country isn't better than this moment.  And we don't exactly know what we can do about that without becoming them.

You can disagree on guns v. butter (especially lawyers, given their training/culture) and approaches on how best to help all Americans, and maybe some day we can get back to that.  You can't disagree about kids in cages, 170,000 dead Americans, a president* who literally cannot and will not read, billions of dollars being stolen out the back door from pretty much any source they can find, protestors being disappeared by unidentified mercs, PPE being stolen and re-sold

Ya' know what? I better stop there and go back to the YT blackhole time sink of watching WW clips.

I was going to grumble about hockey and Trumpers not aligning very well, and started to look for some maps to back up my issue.  Turns out I owe you an apology:

First, mentions of Hockey on Twitter during NHL Season:

There are a couple states like MN and NY that buck the trend, but, still, there's more alignment there than I expected.

Nah. We're pretty much a complete and total shiat hole country.  Even if you factor out the mango moron, and replace his vermin with competent, dedicated people, you're still left with a nation that has ignored over 240 years of systemic racism, a truck load of crippling national debt, a population that has been getting declining education for over 40 years, people consistently voting to de-fund education further, and between 1/4 and 1/3 of the population gleefully practicing willful ignorance and total submission to fundamentalist religion.

Give us 50 - 100 years, we're not even close to done shredding every last bit of civil society we've built. Maybe, possibly, some of us are better than this moment, but a substantial portion of our population is more than happy to continue our accelration down the river Styx while simultaneously setting the top this hand-basket on fire.

You've got probably my favorite screenname and avatar combination on all of Fark, and I respect you immensely based on that alone.

Most anyone who gives it more than a passing thought knows exactly who is behind TLP. I liked that Louisiana/Cajun wisdom someone dropped on this issue recently: Right now we've got to worry about the alligator closest to the boat.

Maynard G. Muskievote: WW is one of my favorite shows of all time. But I haven't been able to watch it in the last 3.5 years without having a major sad.

RIGHT?!

I mean, it served as a wonderful security blanket during W, when we "only" had a war no one wanted and the post-Clinton malaise and Cheney as the dark sith in the shadows and the return of the Nixon Junta.  It showed that aspirations and ethics and hard work and intelligence and empathy could be hoped for, could function, could actually be a goal we could all have.

I really, really wish they had brought it back (Sam wins the OC 47th after the actual OC districts flipped would have been a natural launch point, but maybe he wins in the show's backstory, a few years before they actually flipped IRL, and he's a senator, say?)... we really could have used the escape.  It almost could have written itself... but, then again, it would have been, maybe, even _more_ depressing in contrast to the shiatshow that is real life during this administration.

All the things it showed us that _could_ be, that we _should_ expect... I mean... could you imagine _anyone_ from the current t(R)eason party having the respectable honor of Speaker Walken?

Ah, what could have been.  It's definitely on my "win the PowerBall and start throwing money at stupid projects" list, though.  "So, how many people could I pay to write and do a table read..." ; )

Oooo, I like that!  Never heard that before.

And in this case, TLP is an alligator out there eating all the closer, hungrier alligators, and, as an alligator, knows just where to sink in their teeth.  Once we're down to just TLP, we can turn on it, too.

If TLP (or anyone else) is willing to bend the rules of "propriety" and "decorum" -- to which the Ds like so faithfully to adhere -- to go after Mango Mass Murderer, farkin' let 'em.  All hands on deck.

I'm impressed with how fast they are, honestly.  And ya' can't argue with the quality and accuracy of the product.
