The NCAA doesn't govern the FBS championships. That's part of why the NCAA doesn't have any power over those conferences.

And it's why all the titles don't matter, tbh.

Yeah, I just read that.  And expected that stupid loophole.  The NCAA can't even be authoritarian when they NEED to be authoritarian!

This is true.  And is as stupid as a situation like: "the NBA does not govern the NBA playoffs, that's a separate committee."  Who comes up with these systems?

It actually makes sense as a system, if you understand the history. It's more like the UN, in that countries generally use it to provide an avenue for particular negotiations, bit because each nation/group of nations maintains their own sovereignty, the ultimate power of how they behave is up to them.

The Power 5, especially, are like all the wealthy, powerful nations. When they decide they don't care about everyone else and they think they can just do what they want, they're not bound by anything to the UN. Others can sanction them, but if they have a big enough economy, other big nations aren't gonna give up the cash to do what's right, because morals don't matter as much as money to a LOT of people.

So because the NCAA is little more than an oversight body/chamber of commerce, it doesn't matter what they say.

Sometimes that's good; sometimes it's bad. But that's why it's always stupid when people make the NCAA out to be the bad guy with anything. The NCAA has zero power beyond what the schools and conferences give them. Their only big moneymaker is the men's basketball tournament - they lose money on every other championship they put on (might be a slight exaggeration on that, but they definitely don't make much on any other one).

Lower classes of football get no Championship. But the FBS still does.

This will lead to great wailings and gnashing of teeth from some.

Wow. When you were younger, did you go to your high school's FB or BB games? Wrestling matches? Did you watch the Olympics growing up? You got kids? Gonna watch them play sports? I go to 3 or so football games a year at my kids high school, even though they don't play. And basketball/volleyball gams occasionally. Would go to more if we didn't have winter. But amateur sports can be just as exciting and enjoyable as pro. Now you go watch Detroit play Chicago, I'm going to watch LSU play Alabama.

The head of the NCAA is selected by ADs nationwide. It is rare for the NCAA to go against the wishes of a majority of ADs. Sometimes it happens but the NCAA is there to protect the business interests of college sports. Not a single school is obligated to participate in the NCAA. They do because business is good under NCAA guidance. The ONLY coercive power the NCAA is specific post-season NCAA tournaments like March Madness.

Sure, there's all the marketing they do. That is why school athletics departments give up so much control. But it is all voluntary. Push too far and the NCAA makes itself irrelevant.

The country made a political decision several years ago that reverberates throughout society. One consequence is that business interests get prioritized at the interstate level. So there will be college athletics at some level this fall because of strong constituencies in states that place business interests first and lack the social financial resiliency of states that choose the well-being of society over business interests.

Without a national concensus giving the NCAA the social capital to put the well-being of students first sports will go on in some form.

No. I tell my children that if they want attention from their father, then they better become professionals. I wouldn't even look at my daughter until she passed the bar exam.  Amateur lawyering, much like amateur sports just doesn't interest me.

I feel bad for all the dropped pop ups, tee-ball wiffs, and muffed punts you had to endure while watching children attempt to "play" sports.  Sure, some pros make mistakes, but I don't recall Jayson Heyward missing an easy pop up to right field because he was sitting on the ground picking dandelions.

The NCAA isn't really centralized. They organize divisions and host post-season play but everything else is up to schools. FBS is separate specifically to dilute the influence of the NCAA. The school ADs are the ones who decide what to comply with and the lumps they are willing to take to ignore them.

true though i think if you can get one more power 5 conference to pack it in that will go away.   Also the NCAA doesn't have to recognize it.

Not even close. Maybe they did lick door knobs. Now they want to play football. So what?

I guess we'll just have to bet on how much and what part of California burns.

That actually isn't factually true, if you are saying there would be no COVID-19 cases if everyone followed what you said.

Not sure how serious you are but some of the best memories I have with my kids are when I was coaching or watching them play sports.   When they made a tough play and their teammates recognized it I was proud.  When they got the big hit or strikeout to win the game I was proud.   When they struck out or walked in four runs I was still proud because they did their best and that is all I can ask.
