One thing I don't get about American houses is the obsession with multiple bathrooms. Why would you need 16 bathrooms in a house with 9 bedrooms?

I'm sorry, why do we need tiny violins?

It's for the sex parties. You don't want to be short on bathrooms when you're hosting one of those.

You're equating someone who was grew up in the entertainment Industry and married a British royal as a typical American with typical middle class tastes?

Also I don't think I've ever heard of, or seen any house with more bathrooms than bedrooms.  American or any other place in the world.

When my parents built their empty-nest house, they did it with 2 bedrooms and 2.5 bathrooms on 9 acres.  It had all kinds of specific things they wanted like a 3-car garage with a heated floor and drains (perfect for dealing with Midwestern winters), and a daylight basement with a heated floor.

My sister owns a house with 5 bedrooms and 5.5 bathrooms.  2 bedrooms with an en-suite on the top floor.  2 bedrooms with a shared bathroom on the top floor.  A half-bath on the main floor, and a bedroom with an en-suite in the basement.  There is an additional full-bathroom in the basement which makes no sense to me.  It makes no sense to anybody, really.

A bathroom for every bedroom (possibly two for rooms for couples). You also need a few bathrooms clustered around the public areas so that if more than one guest at a time needs to check their makeup and do a line, they don't have to wait.

"They will also have to pay a huge yearly property tax of $288,000"

Serves them right for moving to the US. In the UK the annual property tax on Buckingham Palace, if you'd bought it for a billion pounds as your private home, would be £1750.

Badmoodman: "Harry and Meghan have settled into their new home and say they are still figuring things out, they hope when Covid lets up their lives will become easier"

Well there's the living hell of media intrusion into their private lives. Strangely the book published a couple of days ago has a huge amount of very intimate and personal details but they haven't complained in the slightest about that. Almost as if they cooperated with the authors to produce a highly favourable account from their side. Just as they deny cooperating with anyone on the stories criticising her father but didn't complain in the slightest when all their friends talked to the media.

/From many accounts she's the sensible one and it's Harry who's gone off the deep end.  In the royal family the "spare" always feels shiat on. From childhood his brother has always been the Heir, the future King. William has always been given the preferential treatment. Harry is just the backup in case anything happened to William.
Hardly surprising that's screwed with him. Same with Prince Andrew who grew up in Charles' shadow, and he turned out to be a dick.

It is a big house.

Sure, each bedroom has an en suite bathroom.

There will also be one adjacent to the kitchen. And couple in the common rooms where guests are entertained. And one by the pool. And one by the spa area. And one by the tennis courts. The house is almost 15k square feet. My house is 3k square feet and it has four bathrooms (en suite master bath, shared bathroom for the other three bedrooms, first floor half bath, basement/rec-room/bar half bath). For a household that is likely to do a lot of entertaining having convenient facilities throughout the mansion is assumed.

We're looking for a 2bdrm 2 and 1/2 bath apartment. Seeing several of those in newer developments. Toilet and sink for guests. Like my bathroom in disarray. Like my guests to have tidy place to shiat I don't have to share. My uncle has a sprawling place he and his wife built. No garage as he has a massive shop elsewhere on the farm, but they have a huge, high ceiling carport that is on the same level as their back porch. Ceiling fans, efficient lighting, walled off area with simple outdoor sink and a grill. Sharing that waterwall is a little 1/2 bath. He built a place for outdoor guests to shiat, for the occasional workman to wash hands. Seems reasonable. I grew up sharing one bathroom with 2 to 6 other people and guests. I don't get why people care about these self-exiled royals, and their home, but I don't begrudge them the purchase. I'd never build such excessive structures if I were doing so, but I'm betting the sheer number of bathrooms had little to do with their decision. Personally, I hope the prince just gets his private shiatter and the peace to use it.

I stand corrected then.  I never heard of so many bathrooms.

I'm happy with 2 bathrooms.  If its just the wife and I.  3 if we have a kid.  I admit I like multiple bathrooms.  I know older working class homes from the earlier part of the 20th century (which are now priced as starter homes for young couples) often have just one bathroom which is difficult.

From my one year of architecture school, I believe it has something to do with the square footage of the home. A house like this will have an en suite for every bedroom, but there's also some (informal?) guidelines to have a bathroom every 1000 ft^2 or something like that. The idea is that from a usability standpoint, you don't want people to have to walk half a kilometer to go to the bathroom. So you get bathrooms scattered around the home so residents or guests don't have to walk too terribly far to relieve themselves, and then you add to that the number of bathrooms for the en suites. Voila, 16 baths for 9 bedrooms.

In a house that big you have multiple wings or living areas.  Sure, one bath for each bed, but then you're going to have a bath or half bath near the pool, near the living room, near the tennis courts etc.  You're not going to run across half the property and go up or down multiple flights of stairs to get to the bathroom.  they are going to be conveniently located to activity spaces.

What? People loved Meghan, and the press gave her lots of gushing, positive, coverage from the start up to and past her wedding. It was a couple of comments criticising her and Harry for lecturing everyone on saving the environment while they were taking lots of jollies on private jets to go on holiday that made them turn on the media.

The UK is pretty much the least racist country in Europe. And that's according to the EU.

When appraising houses in a lot of markets when you go over 8-9 bathrooms you start to lose value on those full baths as opposed to half baths.

Also, I bet a lot of those bathrooms aren't in the actual house but near the tennis court, pool etc.
