Will Smith is kind of a tool but if he truly has a fear of sharks and then then he's got balls. And I applaud those balls. You won't find me hanging around a snake pit.

Old Man Winter: The Earf thing is awfully racist at this point.

The thing that makes it racist is that he definitely just says "Earth" in the movie.

The irony is that the original line was: Welcome to earth, motherfarker. The studio quickly removed the MFer. I took my kids to see it when it first came out and i was torn when I heard the line. My kids were still pretty young, but dude had just caused the alien to crash using the old parachute trick. That was badass.

If the studio had left the motherfarker in there, no one would be talking about the earth part. Is was an awesome line and the studio neutered it.

His best friend just got killed, along with his entire squadron. He'd be pretty pissed off. He seemed to get over it pretty quickly. I think a "motherfarker" would have been appropriate

Later thought: That said, with Smith's usual speaking style, you could definitely believe/misremember him saying "Earf" 20 years after you last saw it.

Ironically, "Earf" is an anagram of "Fear".

The "welcome to Earf" line isn't nearly as funny as people who get their panties in a twist about it.

He's also a professional military officer.  There is a certain amount of expected decorum expected of an officer.  So he understands that the film had to maintain a PG-13 rating.

A PG-13 allows one or two eff words if they aren't sexually related.

Same thing with nudity.  Remember watching Romeo and Juliet the film in high school?  Tits galore.  There's no way that'd be allowed today.  Violence, and to a lesser extent, language are normalized.  But don't you dare show a nipple!

For some reason this reminds me when I watched Major League 2 with my dad.  A fairly tame movie for a child.  Then we rented the original Major League.  Huge difference!

Titanic was the last time I saw boobs in a PG-13 movie. I know there have been some since then but not like the 1970's and 1980's when PG boobs were plentiful. And that meant a lot to us growing up.

But violence, were the R rated action movies of the 1980s really all that violent? Sure a lot of people got shot but look at the shows on broadcast TV now. People getting their heads ripped off, their guts ripped out... there wasn't any of that in most of the movies like Lethal Weapon or Die Hard. But God forbid we see boobs or people smoking.
