#1. Who wants to be around their co-workers so much that they start a club?

#2. Grow the fark up, work is not high school.

I used to run a wine club at the bank where I was working. We had a few hundred members and we'd get together to taste new wine and then use our buying power to negotiate better prices. it was great. Plus since I did all the buying I was more than a little welcome when I went into wine stores.

I had a glass of wine in a bar like that on a business trip to Spain and it was absolutely disgusting.  Never mind the fact that I found the thought of nicotine smoked ham to be completely disgusting, but the damn things were dripping juices onto the table because the staff had neglected to empty the juice cups stuck into the lower ends of each ham.

The ham itself is absolutely delightful when it's not dripping into my wine.

big pig peaches: Dead for Tax Reasons: they're both assholes

vegans should've welcomed everyone and just had meals that were vegan and maybe meat eaters would be curious and change their diet.  not to mention the pescatarian angle makes it all bullshiat, fish is meat dipshiats

the meat club was only made in reaction to the other club to be dicks, not as an actual thing

The  vegan could have easily ignored the meat eaters club as it didn't concern them. As usual, the vegan is double the asshole.

The meat club could have easily ignored the vegan club as it didn't concern them. Definitely a situation where everyone involved is an asshole. If the first group just had an open "Vegan and vegetarian recipes and restaurants group" - cool. If the second group just and an open "BBQ and steak recipes and restaurants group" - cool, too. Sounds like both were more about "lifestyle" than they were about food.

Tell you what. I'm going to start the normal balanced diet club. Anyone can be a member but they will be expected to eat a normal array of fish, chicken, beef, fruits, grains, and vegetables. People with religious or medical reasons can exempt themselves from certain foods otherwise you'll be expected to sample everything with an open mind and not be a judgmental a-hole.

How to deal with Vegans, say the following:

"I admire your commitment. It's not something I would do."

It acknowledges their need to be special and at the same time level sets that you're not interested.

Actually other than people between the ages of 10-30 most of the vegan types I know are very quiet. It's a lifestyle to them not a statement.

In general, humans in their natural evolved state are obligate omnivores.  There is no, and never has been any environment on Earth where you can survive long term on a wholly vegan or wholly carnivorous diet with what is naturally available in that environment.

It is only modern technology that allows you to do either in a relatively healthy way.

Personally, I prefer not to deny evolution.  I eat plants *AND* animals.

Sometimes I'll have an all-plant meal, even a vegan one.  Sometimes I'll have pretty much all meat, but usually it's a mixture of both.

I'd never hire one; they're ambulatory HR problems and lawsuits waiting to happen.

Vegetarians are fine, but vegans always have an axe to grind.

Vegetarians don't eat meat.
Vegans don't want you to eat meat.

I used to have a friend/coworker who started vegetarian and then shifted into veganism after some bad experience with an egg that she never elaborated upon. Thing was, she was militantly vegan in her diet, to the extent that she expected everyone else to also be vegetarian at the very least when around her, but that mindset didn't extend to all areas of her life apart from what she ate. This led to a moment in a conversation where I was making an offhand comment about how there are no absolute rules for living and we're all just cobbling together our own idiosyncratic standards and value systems as we go along, which concluded with the line 'like a vegan with a leather sofa,' something she did indeed have, and big and beautiful one. Well, she just froze and stared at me, mouth hanging open, not knowing whether to be indignant or embarrassed, seeming to have never considered the deep incongruity of it before. It was something to see, a person having a sudden jarring moment of clarity about an enormous inconsistency they had been living with - vegan, railed against their circus, loved her leather couch. I don't know how she reconciled it, the subject never came up again.

Exactly. It's a dumpster fire of a sub with nothing but inflammatory and emotional half truths. I picture some 9 year old writing a diatribe about not getting ice cream the night before because he was grounded but he writes it like "Yesterday I was imprisoned again and wasn't allowed to eat anything. I only asked for a calcium containing meal because my bones are brittle but my request was denied. Previously in the day I had accidentally spoken loudly to my Mother figure but she claims I verbally accosted her and that was when the illegal imprisonment began. At this point I am planning to submit my claims of abuse to DHS. AITA Reddit?"

Some of the plains areas in the Midwest and Africa are the rare exceptions.  It would often be years before the nomadic groups got back to areas where there were things like berries. I read something long ago about the great plains and the carrying capacity was linked to basic veggie based nutrients.   Apparently bison have higher levels of trace minerals than cattle but that goes away when they can't roam over thousands of miles of land.

Found the vegan.

There is almost always something vegetarian at a restaurant, and in any case, they are the ones who have created their own dietary restrictions.

And as has already been noted, they made their little club, then explicitly banned any meat-eaters from joining it. It would have been an excellent opportunity to introduce us evil omnivores to the joys of veganism, but that was hardly the point of the group, was it?

If it was just so they have somewhere to eat, why did they ban people who aren't vegetarian/vegan/piscetarian? The group statement included all dinner options will be vegan.

If they only eat vegan stuff at the group outings, what is so hard about taking a "meat eater" along who will not eat meat at the outing? They could have chosen not to be exclusionary.

It is also relevant that the company subsidizes these groups to an extent. So why wouldn't they start a "life style" group for themselves now that dinner/lunch clubs have basically been given a green light?

Fairly arrogant of one to assume that a vegan has "created their own dietary restrictions".

First, that assumes that there aren't any health benefits that they need in order counter some other health issue they may have.

Second, that assumes that societal 'norms' must be everyone's 'norms' too and amounts forced assimilation despite whether or not it's better for you to be vegan.

If you'll notice, those 'norms' are changing, becoming more inclusive. The way it should be as society evolves to include more health, life, and earth conscious people.

/Again, not a vegan

Found the jackass who speaks without knowing wtf they're talking about. :-D
Nope, but I've watched enough people go through that with various eating requirements. I know the "Dining out with coworkers while having special dietary needs" routine well. Yeah obviously they only had other Vegans, they're eating together to address their specific dietary requirements, not trying to push their diet on others. Of course you sound like you got a hateboner for vegans to begin with so you would likely flip your shiat were they inviting non vegans along and only eating at vegan restaurants. So how seriously can I take your opinion on them really?
