Honestly the suburbs are not as upper class as they used to be and as a result a lot of suburban neighborhoods are fairly affordable (and as a result are far less white than in previous generations.)

Trump's demographic apocalypse he is warning against happening in the suburbs is about 30 years out of date.

We have a black director, a Ukranian boss, Two Indian team leads, one Chinese, One Black Department manager, two white, And team members that range from Lebanese, to Sri Lankan, Mexican, Back-street East coasters, Korean, And all flavors of religion represented in our office.

Not one single argument has broken out about who believes in what...we all get along famously, and really enjoy each other's company.  Diversity is a cure for what ails this country.  Hanging out with "Your own kind" leads to trumpian nationalism and isolationism.

Ask Japan how well isolationism worked for them.

Trump, fark you! I'm a suburban housewife and what I want most is peace of mind sending my kids to school or letting them play with their friends. I don't want to in constant fear that they might get Covid-19, which thanks to your denials, they are at risk of. It shouldn't be nerve-wracking trying to figure out what form school will take, which option mitigates the risk the most. You are right, I am voting for safety, for a President who would do the right thing and make school safe for teachers, parents, and students. I want a President who listens to scientists and takes firm actions, even when the choices are difficult, not one who just hopes that "this will all go away."

KarmicDisaster: What program is he talking about? Oh, right, Trump.

Under the Obama Administration, in July 2015 HUD promulgated the Affirmatively Furthering Fair Housing Rule pursuant to the Fair Housing Act. It requires cities and towns which receive Federal money for any housing or urban development related purpose to examine whether there are any barriers to fair housing, housing patterns or practices that promote bias based on any protected class under the Fair Housing Act, and to create a plan for rectifying fair housing barriers.

AKA, if you are going to get federal funds you have to do a review to confirm you aren't creating conditions that discriminate against minorities. What an outrage; Trump promises that you can keep the riff raff out!

And again: it is putting the horse back in the barn several decades late if you are trying to keep minorities out of the suburbs.

When I first moved into my neighborhood, there were plans to turn a church on the corner into an overnight shelter for the South Oakland Shelter, and organization I have volunteered for and know helps people who really are trying to get back on their feet.

People went nuts.  It was 2008 and every time someone criticized the people the shelter helped, all I could think was that we were heading for a recession that would likely put this person in need of housing.

The plans weren't approved due to overwhelming opposition.  One of my neighbors foreclosed on their house nine months later.  The shelter went on to operate one night a week.  There were never problems.

The last generation to have single income households in significant number was my parents' generation... and even then they were at the tail end of that trend (e.g. it was considered basic common sense for my mum's contemporaries to get an education and maintain professional credentials "just in case").

My parents are now retirement-aged (statistically a zero-income household) so... yeah, I think we can safely say housewives are extinct at this point.

Yes and the next generations will suffer even more, because of your selfishness Do you think you're special? Well,,obviously you do. Your parents took everything they could get because fark, the "American Dream" and you're taking all you can get, because, hey--the American Dream, and you deserve it.

Younger generations up their consumption and their disposable income. It's how our corporate overlords wanted it, and youre more than happy to comply. Nobody ever questions it, and neither do you. From your little throne of self-pity, you feel ripped off, and so does everyone else. So what? The American Dream IS a ripoff--it's meant to be that way. It's mean to make all of us into greedy, self-centered elites who can't see beyond our own wants.

And there you are, whining about how little you have, and how little you can get, (because that's what it's all about, right?) in the most developed, spoiled, wasteful, oblivious culture of all time--but YOUR generation doesn't have enough. Cry me a farking river. I've done without my entire life because I wanted to leave enough for the future--not so any of you assholes.

Your lifestyles are leaps and bounds more consumptive and stupid than my generation every thought of being. It's bred into you--you don't know any other way to function except to ask for more, like the petty little culture that bred you.

Shut up. We're all going down, and it's not because of people like me. I've done everything I could do, and nobody cares. You all will eat and consume and brainwash yourselves into extinction, and whine about it all the way to poorhouse, while you're shopping for another new food to consume, or another new place for you to go. The only time you think about the larger world is when you complain about how you're getting shafted. You know what the victim is here, and it's not you--it's our farking planet. You know I bet you went to college. Every heard of climate change? Well, get ready, honey, because it's about to rip you a new asshole, and you'll have other things to worry about than whether you can afford a new car this year. And you're just as responsible for it as I am. Probably more. I bet you've used more energy in your life than I"ve used in mine, and I"m old.

Shut the fark up, really. I'd rather die in poverty act like you babies act.

Seriously. If he'd called them "ignorant, fearful, white women" he would have been closer anyway.

If you think Gen X and younger are getting more than the Baby Boomers did, you are not paying attention.

And most of the anger and outrage of younger people is not that they personally are getting less than the post-war generation, it's that that generation had deliberately rigged the system to screw over everyone behind them, actively blocked all attempts to improve equality, pulled up the ladder, and refuse to cede any power.

No, no they aren't.

That sort of lifestyle may have held on through the 70's and even the 80's in more rural parts of the country, but the economic reality is that no, it hasn't been practical in over 20 years pretty much everywhere.

The housewife, in the 1950's conception of the stay-at-home wife of a typical middle-class man who doesn't need to work because her husband makes plenty of money for all (with the couple being white, of course). . .so she stays home and cooks and cleans and raises the kids and watches soap operas in her spare time. . .died at least a quarter century ago in the last vestiges, if not a half-century ago in most of the country.

Trump's appeal to "suburban housewives", trying to scare them about Joe Biden bringing "low income housing" to their suburbs is foghorn (not a dog whistle) aimed squarely at the housewives of the 1950's to 1970's. . .who are either dead, or elderly boomers now.

In the North of England white refuge communities still exist unfortunately. When I moved to West Yorkshire I was inadvertently put in one of them by my relocation package from my new employer. I didn't notice at first because I worked long hours and socialising was limited to begin with. Later, after a few months it hit home.
The local estate agents were called Whitegates ffs. I was called "trouble" by the locals when I "accidentally" imported an Asian friend into the area when her marriage broke up.

Rather than fearing integration, a housewife's bigger fear is being traded in for a newer model.

Damn you make it so easy to pick your colour, would you like to try for red rather than orange?  I give you the chance, pick your poison.

I don't know what this means.

I get the impression that you do not know what much means.  Let me spell it out, are you an ignorant tRump/GOP supporter, or are you a troll.  Trolls get red, right now you are orange.

What a good idea to divide people by colour. You wouldn't want to overtax your brain by thinking too hard.

It makes it easier to see who people are - they are also not only graded by the depth of their colour but also by the +/- I put in their title.  Right now you are just low orange, no title, boring.  So like I said, do you wish to change anything?

Do you seriously imagine other people give a shiat about what colour you mark them as? Or, as is far more likely, are you just signalling your mindless political allegiance to the group so that the cool kids will let you hang out with them?

There are no cool kids here.  I was just trying to decide whether you were trolling or ignorant.  I see it is the later. You seem to be pro-GOP and anti-everyone else.

My fantasy is Trump will ask biden, during one of the debates, if he has had a cognitive test. Biden will respond by saying yes I will take one right now. And say, "person man woman camera TV."

Biden can then ask Trump if he knows where that is from.

Does he think all women are housewives because of Leave it to Beaver or because him and all his buddies have trophy wives who don't really work?

Now I'm picturing Trump as being so proud of Ivanka because she actually got a job instead of just marrying Jared and being a trophy wife, that like her having a job puts her in the 1% of women who actually work, she didn't want to just sit at home she is a go getter who actually went out and got a job, in her dad"s business as an executive and isn't it great that she could start out as an executive and not in the steno pool. She isn't one of those steno girls, just looking for a husband she's actually like smart and works like a man at a man's job not one of those womanly jobs just goes to show how special Trumps are, but not Tiffany her mom was an American everyone knows European Trophy wives are what real succesful men have like Trump did twice meaning he can be forgiven for marrying an American but she was hot, too bad her daughter isn't as hot as Ivanka, Trump would date Ivanka if she wasn't his daughter but Tiffany, if Tiffany wasn't his daughter he eouldn't date her, sure he'd Fark her but date her, no. And look at Tiffany going to law school and not getting an executive job like Ivanka, did he ever tell you how Ivanka got an executive job right out of college, how smart is that? Started right up as an executive, and she still got a rich husband. A success times two, an executive and a trophy wife. And she's smart listen to her name off the state capitals, man Trump thinks he really wishes he cod get someone so hot and succesful and smart like Ivanka

I wonder how many of the people he's targeting this statement toward actually resemble the image he's trying to conjure up?  Like, are tons of his supporters *really* living some dream Leave it to Beaver existence?  Is that what life is like in middle of nowhere, plains state suburbs?  I honestly don't know.  If it were 1990, sure I could believe that, but after two recent economic downturns, are lots of people still making that happen, or is the 'suburban housewife' really also going to work full time so they can make the payments on the mortgage that bit them in the ass around 2008 after the new rates kicked in.  Is he pandering to people treading water, barely keeping their head high enough to breathe, by saying 'yup, my legion of super swimmers will vote me to a 2d term'.

Having been the above median breadwinner for a single income household in suburbia, I can honestly say we were the exception, not the rule.

By far.

Now rural. Still the exception. I look at my wages, income, and benefits. I then look at my father's when he was my age. He was also above median. But the value of his income in the economy he was earning it in, was more than the value of mine in the economy I am earning in.

But hey, Im Gen-X. The boomers told us our whole lives we'll be worse off; that we should cope, get over it, we have to work harder than they did. Why? Because they were taking more than contributing back, not openly admitting it to us, caring about it, or just throwing up a big 'I got mine, fark you. Oh, and as you start contributing to the economy, give us more while we party, toke up, and say not for you.'

So, guess what? We did what they told us to do. Bitter is what it turned many of us into.

Ironically, most traditional Indian food actually takes all day to cook. Best you can save time on is throwing the marinade together in the morning and putting the meat in the fridge before you go to work, and save two hours to do your vegetable and dals after you get home, before you eat. Still just hard to do without someone staying home and doing the cooking, nevermind your roti.

They also party constantly and have loud music booming and I live like 200 yards from them, so if I can hear it from inside the house, I dunno, maybe they're on PCP. The black family next door and the Asian immigrants behind me are much better neighbors. The Asian family weeds their yard by hand, which is weird, but hey, it's not attracting snakes like the other one.

Grungehamster: KarmicDisaster: What program is he talking about?

Like he ever knew. The closet he ever got to the burbs was watching Leave it to Beaver.

Officer Barrelroll: Pissing off working women by talking about being a housewife is a solid strategy.

Are we sure Trump aced the part of the cognitive test that showed he knows what year it is ?

But he put it in quotes!! He totally meant to use it as a catch all for housewives, househusbands, working wives, working men... Totes what he meant to do...

I'd say that he needs to stop beating this dead horse because he's not getting anywhere with it. Then again, maybe that's a benefit for us?

Flab: A pirate should feel at home surrounded by boats, no?

Meh, they're all money pits. Not sure why a person would need twin outboards to navigate a small lake but that's KY boat culture. Yee-haw.

imapirate: I live in a suburban hellscape of McMansions, Corvettes, huge SUVs, boats and other crap that middle age people buy to make themselves feel better. I don't like it here but Mrs. Pirate won't let me move. Anyway, I think he's seriously underestimating how diverse the suburbs are.

A pirate should feel at home surrounded by boats, no?
