enry: *Looks across the street at the Indian family*
*Looks next door at the Portuguese family*
*Looks down the street at another Indian family*

I'm not seeing the problem with my neighborhood.

We have a black director, a Ukranian boss, Two Indian team leads, one Chinese, One Black Department manager, two white, And team members that range from Lebanese, to Sri Lankan, Mexican, Back-street East coasters, Korean, And all flavors of religion represented in our office.

Not one single argument has broken out about who believes in what...we all get along famously, and really enjoy each other's company.  Diversity is a cure for what ails this country.  Hanging out with "Your own kind" leads to trumpian nationalism and isolationism.

Ask Japan how well isolationism worked for them.

espiaboricua: Stavr0: Going for the Karen demographic.  Bold move, Cotton.

It's narrower than the Karen demographic: he's going for the subset of the Karen demographic who has stay-at-home women (Moms or otherwise) who post on social media about how "blessed" their livehoods are... because they get to stay home while their husbands work.

Fun Fact: A large proportion of these "blessed" women have husbands working for the government.. either as government workers or as government contractors.

Or on disability.

Now son, don't forget to study hard and continue the cycle of oppression of women and minorities, so that they don't come back and get revenge on us for centuries of abuse!

SurfaceTension: How big is the Venn diagram intersection of "can afford to live in the suburbs" and "single income family?" Can't be all that big, can it?

Hes going after the core voting group called the "mommy bloggers". They often times have monogrammed yeti cups, have kids with y's in their names instead of i's, and often refer to themselves as "hashing boss babes" because they once spent their toddlers college fund on Lululemon stockings.

KarmicDisaster: What program is he talking about? Oh, right, Trump.

Under the Obama Administration, in July 2015 HUD promulgated the Affirmatively Furthering Fair Housing Rule pursuant to the Fair Housing Act. It requires cities and towns which receive Federal money for any housing or urban development related purpose to examine whether there are any barriers to fair housing, housing patterns or practices that promote bias based on any protected class under the Fair Housing Act, and to create a plan for rectifying fair housing barriers.

AKA, if you are going to get federal funds you have to do a review to confirm you aren't creating conditions that discriminate against minorities. What an outrage; Trump promises that you can keep the riff raff out!

And again: it is putting the horse back in the barn several decades late if you are trying to keep minorities out of the suburbs.

When I first moved into my neighborhood, there were plans to turn a church on the corner into an overnight shelter for the South Oakland Shelter, and organization I have volunteered for and know helps people who really are trying to get back on their feet.

People went nuts.  It was 2008 and every time someone criticized the people the shelter helped, all I could think was that we were heading for a recession that would likely put this person in need of housing.

The plans weren't approved due to overwhelming opposition.  One of my neighbors foreclosed on their house nine months later.  The shelter went on to operate one night a week.  There were never problems.

A_Listless_Wanderer: The "suburban housewife" is nearly extinct. Every adult woman I know has a job.
The fact that the Trump Campaign is targeting housewives is just another example of how out of touch conservatism is with America.

The last generation to have single income households in significant number was my parents' generation... and even then they were at the tail end of that trend (e.g. it was considered basic common sense for my mum's contemporaries to get an education and maintain professional credentials "just in case").

My parents are now retirement-aged (statistically a zero-income household) so... yeah, I think we can safely say housewives are extinct at this point.

Let's count the dog whistles:
Suburban housewife is a dog whistle for white woman.
Putting quotes around it doubles down.
Low income is a dog whistle for blacks.
Invade is a dog whistle.
And of course putting the (((angry black guy))) in charge is icing on the cake.
5 whistles in one tweet is actually kinda impressive...

The fact that "housewives" are a luxury most families can't afford these days is a great example of how conservative capitalism has hurt this country.

Aside from the racist dogwhistle, Trump still thinks housewives exists like he doesn't even realize the trickle down economics of his party never trickled down and so most married couples in the suburbs are dual income households.

Ordinarily, politicians gravitate to the center after the primary. This is something Trump is completely incapable of doing.

Officer Barrelroll: Pissing off working women by talking about being a housewife is a solid strategy.

Are we sure Trump aced the part of the cognitive test that showed he knows what year it is ?

I wonder how many of the people he's targeting this statement toward actually resemble the image he's trying to conjure up?  Like, are tons of his supporters *really* living some dream Leave it to Beaver existence?  Is that what life is like in middle of nowhere, plains state suburbs?  I honestly don't know.  If it were 1990, sure I could believe that, but after two recent economic downturns, are lots of people still making that happen, or is the 'suburban housewife' really also going to work full time so they can make the payments on the mortgage that bit them in the ass around 2008 after the new rates kicked in.  Is he pandering to people treading water, barely keeping their head high enough to breathe, by saying 'yup, my legion of super swimmers will vote me to a 2d term'.

Ironically, most traditional Indian food actually takes all day to cook. Best you can save time on is throwing the marinade together in the morning and putting the meat in the fridge before you go to work, and save two hours to do your vegetable and dals after you get home, before you eat. Still just hard to do without someone staying home and doing the cooking, nevermind your roti.

I do not know where to start, the misogyny or the racism.

If that is all he has to call on, then if he does not lose by a margin so large it beats his cheating, then the US is a failed state and I will sign up to the sane side when the civil war starts.

Trump, fark you! I'm a suburban housewife and what I want most is peace of mind sending my kids to school or letting them play with their friends. I don't want to in constant fear that they might get Covid-19, which thanks to your denials, they are at risk of. It shouldn't be nerve-wracking trying to figure out what form school will take, which option mitigates the risk the most. You are right, I am voting for safety, for a President who would do the right thing and make school safe for teachers, parents, and students. I want a President who listens to scientists and takes firm actions, even when the choices are difficult, not one who just hopes that "this will all go away."

It's kind of cute/archaic that he thinks "housewives in the suburbs" are a sizable voting bloc. Most farking wives in the suburbs have their own jobs because Americans that didn't inherit a billion dollars need 2 incomes to survive and afford a home in the farking suburbs.

No reason for an adult woman to sit on her arse at home, at least after the last kid leaves for kindergarten. Doubly so if the woman is educated, which is likely since women passed men in receiving 4 year degrees in the early 1980's.

There's also a call to the men who think women should be housewives and not working/taking jobs from men. That a woman having a real job not a "mommy's" part time gig like giving piano lessons, is not "feminine" - aka emasculating.

Trump's sole contribution to the United States may well be putting a spot light on how much further we have to go as a society.
