I confess I am a Dr. Pepper addict. We have been ordering groceries through a couple of different stores and Dr. Pepper has been limited for a couple of months now in these parts. So I'm drinking less, which can't hurt.

And I never see Mr. Pibb around here.

Thats not all in short supply. I went to the local Meijers and they only had cherry coke in a few 2 liter bottles left. Tons of the regular coke which I don't like.

I had a terrible Dr Pepper addiction years ago; I drank at least 4 cans a day from the vending machine at work.  I realized I needed to get a grip the day the vending machine ran out and I and a coworker with an equally vicious habit left notes for the vending company asking them to please, please restock the machine, PLEASE, and when I came back to my desk after lunch the vending company lady had left a six-pack on my desk with a note that said, "Don't panic, we're getting more for the machine; in the meantime, please split this with Scot."

She was the nicest vending machine lady.

I do remember being okay with Mr. Pibb, in the early 90s as a lad, but I did not like the other one when it was in the work vending machine.

Makes sense, also the gas stations around me taped off the self serve soda fountains, so that means more people buying cans and bottles of soda when on the road.

I don't like how it played out any more than you do, but Dr Pepper Bottling Group couldn't turn a blind eye to it forever. At least they had the good sense to continue selling the real-sugar version afterwards since they knew there was a market for it.

Seriously though, if you're gonna get rid of an internal "competitor" who made money from a) novelty sales and b) lack of regional availability, and they're selling okay in spite of the need for ABSURD shipping costs, you'd think you'd at LEAST open up distribution everywhere of a competitor/replacement of that product which you shut down.

But nobody wants to pay to have ho-hum Heritage shipped. But, in my neck of the woods... literally every little store, and even some BIG stores, are now selling Mexican Coca-Cola. Because it sells. And it's good.

Dr Pepper really, really farked up.

spiralscratch: Somewhat related: Is the shortage of non-caffeinated Pepsi and Coke a Bay Area thing, or nationwide?

It's a supply issue, so it's nationwide.  Demand for canned and bottled sodas is through the roof as most people don't have soda fountains in their home and aren't going to restaurants these days.  The factories were set up to produce so much of the product in syrup form to be used in soda fountains... but that that demand is basically gone.

The bottleneck is in canning or bottling the product.  As such, Coke and Pepsi are focusing on their core products.  Coke and Pepsi, and filling orders for their more esoteric products, like caffeine free Coke and Pepsi whenever they have free time on the machines which are probably running 168 hours a week at this point.

/Production supervisor at a factory that's similarly going through hell this year.

[The Fizzicist]

Hmm. I will look.

But so help me God... you'd better be right...

... or, what..?  XD

Seriously though.  A long time ago, I used to be able to buy the Dublin stuff locally at a soda shop here in Burbank (at an extreme markup, but worth it).

I even stopped in Dublin, TX on a cross-country drive in the late-00s, and stuffed my car's back seat & trunk with as many cases as I could fit; enough that lasted me over a year.

A few years ago -- when Dr Pepper released a 'classic' cane-sugar version in celebration of its 100th anniversary (in the vintage-look '10-2-4' bottles) -- I bought a few cases every time I went to the local Target which carried 'em ... that supply also lasted me about a year beyond the time it finally disappeared from shelves.

A couple of years ago, I found The Fizzicist.  I was skeptical at first, too ... but it's what I drink now, when I crave a soda that tastes like what I want.

As a bonus: it's cheap.

I did a couple of projects with Dr Pepper/Snapple and when you enter their facility they offer you all you want access to a giant fridge filled with every variety they had (circa 2010ish) of both Snapple and Dr Pepper. They tell you to take some with you on the way out.

Oh man, I wish non-caffeinated non-diet Pepsi/Coke/Dr Pepper was more of a thing. I'm told they actually do exist, but they might as well be mythical for the amount of times I've actually seen them.

Too much caffeine gives me migraines.

Go ahead. You hoard. I will do without. I got one can in a car package when I was a student and that was plenty for me. I don't like anything sweetened with the liquour from a a jar of Marishino cherries, and that includes Cherry Cola.

Nice my favorite name for a dr.pepper knock off is Dr.Diablo sold, or at least was sold at Red owl stores, no clue if any are left at this point.    Always amused me that with diablo being spanish for devil , that they gave satan a doctorate.

Edit: upon doing some google fu it seems it was Shasta that used that name , not red owl specifically.   It appears now the they dropped Diablo and call it Dr.Shasta now.

As much as i am a fan for Dr.Pepper I could not bring myself to spend that much for what amounts to a 24 pack/case of  the stuff.   That said it doesn't seem in short supply here yet ( Rural Minnesota) but i suppose time shall tell.

Mr Pibb used to taste like Dr. Pepper but with weaker carbonation/acid and a prominent cherry component.

Pibb Extra drowns whatever cherry flavor may remain in what seems to be a 50/50 mix of corn syrup and club soda, with no sensation or flavor available to the drinker other than thick, syrupy sweetness. I found it sickening even back when I drank shiatloads of soda and didn't find most soda to be too sweet, like I do now.

/ Dr. Thunder is the best cheap commonly-available Dr. Pepper knockoff.

(first of all, amazeballs pic! I love it!) I haz a very curious about the "BOB!!!" one! but omang, those Zevia flavors are... yeah, they are all of them very disappointing.

in time of distant past, I'd order 24-bottle cases of the Messican fantas off the hamazons. just something about a chilled glass bottle and the entire thing disappears before you can even take a breath. but lately I don't like the sugars as much, so it's healthy fortifying grain-alcohol with seltzer, ice, and fresh citrus fruits.
