Imagine being the night watchman at a Hollywood special effects warehouse. One night, close around midnight, you hear the faint noise of a bicycle horn honking frantically. You go to investigate, winding your way through row upon row of wooden crates and disused props.

As you reach the source of the bicycle horn, your flashlight suddenly illuminates a fat, drunken man, dressed in Bozo the Clown makeup and costume. Your flashlight beam has caught him in the middle of farking a spare Crypt Keeper puppet, an act made comically noisy by the fact that he's got a warped, rusty bicycle horn over his wang.

He stops, mid-thrust, fixing you with a steely, suddenly sober gaze, looking for all the world like you are the most trifling, incidental and fleeting impediment to whatever affront against God he intends on committing. All he says is "I have no time for idiots." And resumes pumping and honking.

This is the precise spirit in which such a stupid, un-self aware remark on the part of George Conway should be received.

The man wants to make shiattonnes of money in a post-Trump world pimping his family's dysfunction via books and reality TV shows. All of the social media drama with his kid is too neatly packaged as convenient little soundbites for it to be the work of anyone other than paid consultants.

Bernie almost certainly would have had worse, had he win the nomination. His campaign made it clear he would accept anyone's endorsement, and would happily platform any number of problematic people, if they endorsed him.

So your fake concern about Kasich rings hollow.

Because you're too afraid or too complicit let me spoil it for you.

FTFA:
It is a pity-the biggest shortcoming of their book-that Saldin and Teles do not discuss what their subjects have been doing since 2016, an era in which the Never Trumpers have enjoyed a smashing victory with their faux-nostalgic call for "normalcy" and restoration. Launching their book in The Atlantic, Saldin and Teles remark that Never Trump Republicans have been "rehabilitated" by mainstream Democrats in a way that was "once unthinkable," adding that big donors like billionaire Seth Klarman have funded a centrist alliance to establish a "patriotic" and "pragmatic" defense against the renascent left, too. They do not detail all the Never Trump work that has gone into helping centrist liberals win their struggle against the left in the Democratic Party, a form of power even if they never get their party back.

While Saldin and Teles are right that the Never Trump phenomenon will have lasting effects, those effects are not the ones they propose. Its significance, even if it was born on the right, is that it succeeded overwhelmingly in a centrist containment of the left. Its historic role turns out to be not among Republicans so far, but within a Democratic Party whose members have chosen to convert enemies into friends, setting up a guardrail against the capture of their party by the left. The legacy of Never Trump so far is stopping progress, rather than saving democracy.

"Using their newly prominent and rehabilitated public standing, the allies and alumni of Bush's administration have extended their influence over their political adversaries on the liberal side, too. Conservative former Bush officials like MSNBC's Nicole Wallace, Rick Wilson, Steve Schmidt, and David Frum used their newfound pull with the liberal press to join the media onslaught against Bernie Sanders's candidacy in the Democratic primary, making an explicit pitch to liberal voters that was pivotal to swinging frightened older Democratic voters away from him.

Having neutralized a left challenge to their favored foreign policy, these Bush-aligned figures are now attempting to ingratiate themselves with, and therefore influence, a future Joe Biden administration through groups like '43 Alumni For Biden,' viewing the former vice president's hawkish worldview as more simpatico with theirs than Sanders's or even Trump's. They may find success: Biden is, after all, himself a Bush-era throwback, one of Bush's most crucial allies in launching the Iraq War.

[...]

Democrats and establishment media have successfully put all focus on Trump as a freak anomaly, instead of stating the truth: that he's a typically extreme and authoritarian Republican leader who inherited a set of dangerous powers from his predecessors. So despite Biden's empty sloganeering about 'restoring the soul of America,' there is no actual appetite in his Democratic Party to take aim at the root causes of the country's authoritarianism.

While the 2008 Democratic platform vainly promised to 'restore our constitutional traditions, and recover our nation's founding commitment to liberty under law' after Bush's eight-year assault on civil liberties - a promise that Obama, that year's winner, barely pretended to follow up on once in the White House - this year's platform doesn't even pay lip service to this goal, even though these problems have only gotten worse. It is thus more than likely the authoritarian structures that Trump has used and abused to frightening effect over his term will not only stay in place the next time a scary Republican takes office, but will have actually expanded."
