It's a really fun movie, but extremely cheesy. I saw it at a midnight showing and the audience laughed at the first line, but clapped at the big musical number.

It's also a must-watch if you like ELO. HBO has it on their apps.

I loved it. Now I need to watch it again. Thanks.

Love the Tubes, look how young Fee is.

Xanadu, never saw it, but been a Tubes fan since 1977.

OLJ looked hot AF in it. That's all that mattered. That's all that will ever matter about it.

It was on hbo a week ago.  I had forgotten just how cheesy it was.

If you can, go and see the musical production of it. It's hilarious. Camp af (it is a musical!) and played for laughs.

I've seen it twice now - once on broadway and once by a local production. Both times were a hoot.

I unabashedly admit that I love this movie and have inflicted it upon my kids.

It's fun to try and figure out what drugs people were using during the production of a lot of movies.

In Xanadu's case, it was cocaine. Lots and lots and lots of cocaine.

I read an article about it several years ago, and my favorite line was something to the effect of "Everyone on the movie was doing cocaine - the writers, the editors, the lighting guy... everyone.  So when you watch Xanadu, you're watching cocaine."

The singles from ELO and the soundtrack album sold really well, but yeah, the movie makes no damn sense at all.

My girlfriend in high school loved Xanadu, and she had the VHS tape.  I knew that if I kept my damn mouth shut and watched it with her, there would be fun, basement couch time with her after the movie ended.

I loved Xanadu too.

It was a huge box office bomb, and the critics hated it, but it did gain a huge cult following from video rentals and cable TV.

Plus I'm sure plenty of dudes brought their girlfriends to see it because Olivia was in it.

Sandahl Bergman was in that too as one of the muses.

That's a good looking woman as well.

Tell ONJ it sucks and she will get physical with you.

There was a fun little documentary about it on one of the more recent DVD.  Some interesting interviews with and trivia like how Gene Kelly was pissed that they didn't actually show him roller-skating (which he supposedly very good at), how Don Bluth did the animated sequence and Fee Waybill always having to decline requests to do the song at their shows because they only sang half of the tune.

I loved Xanadu when it came out, I love it still, and I don't apologize for that. The ending still gives me goosebumps. It's one of those movies where you can enjoy it for what it is, as long as you don't think about it too much.

I remember giving this movie a hard pass when it came out - & another hard pass when it was dumped onto the local grind-house theatre six months later.

I loved that movie.

CSB: I know someone who used to date Olivia Newton-John in the 1980s. They're still in touch occasionally. I asked him to pass on a message from me: Thanks for a fantastic puberty!

Here's a quiet number from the film.

It's a fantastic "bad" movie.

The ONJ and ELO soundtrack is great.  ONJ is fantastic, period.
I kinda feel bad for Gene Kelly that it was his last movie, but he's great in it, and his 'dancing though time' section with ONJ really gets me in the feels.

I was a summer local in OC Maryland for the summer of '94 and we didn't have cable, just a VCR and one copy of Xanadu (for some reason).   So whenever we were home, someone would put it on, just to have something on in the background.

(We also had a VHS copy of the Cape Fear episode of The Simpsons)

Musically, there isn't a dud in the whole album.  The movie, as many have said, is so cheesy you have to watch it with a box of red wine.

Its slender premise offered us Newton-John as the muse Terpsichore, brought to Earth as a sparkly wheel-footed dream girl for the sole purpose of helping feckless artist Sonny (Michael Beck) and washed-up big band leader Danny (Kelly) to realise their joint dream of opening a glam-rock-swing roller-disco in a disused Los Angeles auditorium.

Kinda suspicious that the USA gross and cumulative Worldwide gross are the exact same figure.  Was it not released overseas?  Or is that "Hollywood accounting"?

The musical is really very, very good. The end result was shockingly better than anyone on the creative team ever imagined. So of course it was failure.

Don't take these Farkers' word for it.  Judge for yourself, since the whole Broadway production is on YouTube.

I saw it in the theater when I was like 12. Went by myself. And I think only two other people were in there with me. Went for the music, as I liked (and still like) Olivia Newton-John and ELO music. Got the album for my birthday that year. Movie sucked though.

I was on the creative team starting before it was written. At first we all thought it would suck but at least we would all make a lot of money. Instead we made it great and lost our shirts.
