So I think this is a repeat of the other Ceres thread, but that other article was such complete shiat I can't even be sure.  Let's keep this one if we have to choose.

While in the current scenario the words "I think we can do it safely" sound like an ominous setup for failure, I do believe that NASA and/or the ESA could do this safely.

And whether they do or not, there's going to be an Elon Musk at some point in the future who is going there, safely or not.

I say smack it in to Mars and see what happens. Not like 2020 could get any worse these days.

Why do we need to land there when we can just take the stargate from Antarctica?

there is an "extensive reservoir" of brine beneath its surface

Fun fact: Brine freezes at 0 degrees F, that is how they used to calibrate Fahrenheit thermometers

Yes, because we're not all living in mud huts, climate change and corporate greed aren't issues.

I got that at Fark years ago.  Fortunately those assholes don't post as often.

An impact by Ceres would be quite effective at decontaminating the Earth.

Contaminate what? Contaminate for whom?

I think space travel is dumb and a waste of resources but if there's resources off planet for the taking what harm comes from exploiting them? All areas outside of this planet are devoid of life and incredibly dangerously inhospitable.

I've been suffering some writer's block with a book I have set there (and a few other places around the Solar system.) Sounds like that couple of weeks of procrastination saved me from making a complete idiot out of myself.

I had the strange idea to drop 4km wide cylinders on the surface, which rotates to provide standard gravity:

Now I have to sort out if the crust is actually thick enough to support something like that.

There are similar underground oceans on the earth. Basically it's water that has seeped down from the ocean floor. I think one of the largest ones was determined to be under China and parts of southeast Asia.

Oh, if you haven't read book - was it 7, or 8? - yet, you have NO FARKING IDEA!

Master Gunnery Sergeant Roberta Draper of the MCRN Marines retires the trophy for Marine Baddassery.  Totally and for all time.

I cannot envision anyone ever challenging her for the title.
