THE BRACKET CHALLENGE WINDOW IS OPEN
***********************************************************......but not for long!  Must be complete before1st puck drop tomorrow!!
Registration is open now for the Bracket Challenge.. You now can do brackets up to the start of the first playoff broadcast (TOMORROW!!! **3:00PM** ET!!)... **A smallish window.**
Anyway, I've re-up'd the "Goon Juice Aficionados" league..  password "Fark234"
Join here:  https://bracketchallenge.nhl.com/leagues/goon-juice-aficionados
You will also need an NHL.com ID, *fill our your bio first or be among the blank entries* and because domains, sign in in both places if/when you create a new account.

Also
Special Agent has done a league with the same name and password at the Hat Trick Challenge. There will be a new segment of play begin with the start of the actual playoffs tomorrow so everyone kinda gets a fresh start then. Make sure you get your picks done before first broadcast starts, the questions lock with the start of the broadcast to do with that question, already missed 2 points with that myself in the return-to-play segment.
Here for HTC: https://hattrick.nhl.com/#/league/2942 which you will have to copy pasta because [hashtag] reasons.

Half the teams in the Lottery are subject to having Bergman fix it for them.

Where do all my spaces and returns keep going....

Anyway... because they have as "legitimate" a chance as any of the other seven...
GO LEAFS!!

I like the NHL's potentially-two-phase lottery seeding system.  Wish all the pro leagues would adopt it.

THE BRACKET CHALLENGE WINDOW IS OPEN
***********************************************************

Thank you for keeping this going.

In the absence of anything better to talk about until we all simultaneously complain about the results of the Draft Lottery, here's my picks.  As a reminder, I am a fan of both the Blue Jackets (nearest local hockey team) and the Avalanche/Nordiques.  Temper expectations accordingly.

Round 1
WEST
Vegas over Chicago: (in 5) Hawks are playing well, but Vegas is just a ludicrously better team at this point, and I don't think that Crawford can steal the series for them.

Avs over Yotes: (in 6) On the other hand, Kuemper *is* totally capable of stealing this series, but that's the only way the Coyotes are going to beat the Avs. However, IMO this is going to be some of the most fun-to-watch hockey in the first round.

Calgary over Dallas: (in 5) Flames are playing really hard right now, and Dallas players have had a bad habit of disappearing at inopportune times over the several years.  Stars just don't seem like they're in playoff hockey mode, and this is in my mind the most likely upset in the West.

Blues over Canucks: (in 7) IMO this will be a longer series, is the best bet to get 7 games in the West, and it's going to take the Blues a bit to get going. I think there's still enough in the Blues tank to get them past the Canucks.

EAST
Habs over Flyers. (in 6) IMO if Carey Price doesn't stop the Flyers in the first round, they're probably going to play for the Cup.  But it's Price, and he's actually been Carey Price recently, so I think this is an upset that will teach a young(ish) Flyers team (and particularly Carter Hart) how to go deep in the playoffs next season.

Jackets over Tampa. (in 5) This is entirely a pick with the heart, not the head.  Nothing says that the Jackets should be able to beat Tampa aside from last playoffs and the way both teams have been playing recently.  Hedman and Stamkos being out for Tampa doesn't help their case either. Being a Blue Jackets fan is what caused the "in 5" part; nothing based on anything rational.

Capitals over Islanders. (in 4)  Just too many weapons on the Caps.  Holtby's been bad this year (sub .900, IIRC), so that gives the Islanders a chance, but I can't see them pulling it off after KOing the Penguins as well. I think the Isles worked so hard against the Pens that their tank is empty and so this is the only sweep in the first round.

Carolina over Boston. (in 5)  Because I watched Boston play recently.  Also, because it'll make a certain recently-time-outed Farker very angry.

Overall, I have Vegas and Colorado meeting for the Western Final, and Colorado coming out on top solely because I'm an Avs fan.  I have Washington and the Hurricanes meeting in the Eastern Final, with the Hurricanes coming out on top, because if they can beat the Leafs with a 42 year old Zamboni Driver Who Works For Them in net, they can beat a Caps team backed by Holtby.

For the Cup, it's Avs vs Hurricanes...with the Cup miraculously going to the Hurricanes so the following events happen:
1) It probably sends Don Cherry to an early grave
2) David Ayers is going to get his name on the Cup (as promised in the Before Time by the team)
3) It is the worst possible outcome for Steve Dangle, and therefore he produces a video in which his throat literally catches fire from screaming at the camera.

Bracket submitted with a 2-to-1 ratio of Wild Guesses to Wishful Thinking

I fully expect at least a 7-out-of-8 failure rate in the first round, so have a look and plan your own brackets accordingly.

Garbage bracket submitted.

2020-08-10 3:15:46 PM
Likewise, if requested, I will post my Hat Trick selections so that you folks can bet against them.

2020-08-10 3:31:55 PM
Like the year 2020, I went full random on my bracket.

2020-08-10 3:59:38 PM
I do not have the mental clarity to make predictions at this time, having little sleep and being awake since 3:30 am PDT.

What is the over/under on how long they drag this thing out before handing the pick to the team the really doesn't need the help?

2020-08-10 5:56:58 PM
Hope Minnesota or Florida get the top pick because the other teams have no excuse to be sucky enough to have been booted from the qualifying round.

Ronin Around: What is the over/under on how long they drag this thing out before handing the pick to the team the really doesn't need the help?

SportsNet has a half hour block for it.

2020-08-10 6:01:17 PM
they are probably going to set the rest of the 8 play-in losers as well.

2020-08-10 6:04:59 PM
Bracket to be built in an hour or so, going to miss the actual lottery drawing due to traffic, so I'll listen to see if Rev K screams loudly, which means the Spoilers got it

2020-08-10 6:10:21 PM
Hoping Minnesota gets it.

Good hockey state, not a repeat winner of getting bailed out with a top draft choice

2020-08-10 6:10:57 PM
Winnipeg, Minnesota and Florida are the only acceptable winners

2020-08-10 6:12:05 PM
Quarantine has not been kind to Bergman. The man really needs to see a barber

2020-08-10 6:13:28 PM
They should add a bunch of "Please choose again" balls.

2020-08-10 6:15:57 PM
ball loading... slowly

I'm liking the Preds (least paint for the logo)

2020-08-10 6:16:14 PM
I would've preferred them drawing a number and an envelope.

/And the ball guy drops the Rangers early, so they're now my pick to get drawn.

And Bettman sounds bored

At least it was not the farking oilers again.

Or shiatsburgh

Hooray!

I said some of you all were ignoring Broadway last night. I knew it.

2020-08-10 6:24:00 PM
Gross.

2020-08-10 6:27:01 PM
Meh. On one hand, at least it's not the Oilers. On the other hand, at least it's not the Penguins.

Fun fact: You know how the Rangers broke a 54-year drought by winning the Cup in '94? If they don't win it next year, they'll be at the halfway point to establishing another 54-year drought.

/Jeez, we're old

2020-08-10 6:30:19 PM
Bracket is in. At least I can burn it for light and warmth later.

Lafreniere wears #11 in juniors, which is kind of not available with the Rangers.

Blueshirts?  You know, that's acceptable, they need it, time for a new era there.

The fact this was structured so that none of the crap teams could get the #1 pick was utter bullshiat.

My problem with the NHL draft is that, once the best 10 players are gone in the first round, it is an utter crapshoot.  Worse than any other major leagues' draft.

Here's my solution:  teams can only draft an 18-year-old in the first round.  All subsequent rounds are 19-year-olds only.  Obviously the first year this gets implemented, it will be a one round draft.

Moving forwards, the best 18-year-olds get drafted with the top 10 or 12 picks.  But then promising players who didn't get picked the year before but put on 20 lbs and tore up their junior leagues start to look really good as 19-year-olds.  Teams will start picking 19-year-olds in the middle of the first round, players who are better-scouted and developed and who might be able to step right into the lineup of their teams.

Given the likelihood of a pair of clown shoes being escorted through a throng of plaid wearing clowns in a clown car, this just might be an asset when predicted the results of his Lord Stanley's ice hockey tournament.

I need some coffee or a nap: I saw "thong plaid clowns" on the first read through of this post.

Brokenseas: The fact this was structured so that none of the crap teams could get the #1 pick was utter bullshiat.

Blame the pandemic. The rules were that 15 non-playoff teams had to have a chance in the lottery at the number 1 pick. They weren't going to change that.

If you want to rip the NHL for not waiting to do the original drawing until now, that's fine. But one of the eliminated teams still would've won the lottery because by the way the original drawing played out, the team with the 12th best odds would've still been the winner.

Moral of the story: The crap teams shouldn't try to be crap. They have no one to blame but themselves.
