So he's saying that if CFB is canceled then the "urbans" will fail?

At least recreational drugs are more fun than hydroxychloroquine and Lysol.

So college football is all about the health and welfare of the players?

Hmmm.

CFB Booster/mark: "FARK IT IF THEY DIE FROM THE 'RONA! I GOTTA TALK SHIAT TO MY NEIGHBOR ABOUT HOW MY SCHOOL CAN BEAT UP THEIR SCHOOL!  AND IF THEY BEAT UP MY SCHOOL, ALL THEIR PLAYERS WERE BOUGHT OFF!"

Christ are most CFB marks just children.

But they don't care about the "health and welfare" of the kids in the astronomy program?
I wonder what is different.

This is what happens when you send a MAGidiot to Oxford.

Seriously, they should take his diploma back.

Dumbass.

The NCAA is going to have to clarify rules, if a player is on scholarship and doesn't play it doesn't reduce eligibility and should still be able to still get meal money at least. A number of players are going to the 5-6 plan fora BA.

dude has no clue what life is like for a college athlete...

Remember the 6 month period where the media tried to tell us Sasse was the reasonable, responsible Republican?

/Let's check with Pepperidge Farms, shall we?

Kids do need organized extracurricular activities that will keep them on the better path, but by the time they get to college... they've already become what they will be, hopefully.

The modern day slave traders are showing a lot of concern about their "student athletes."

But only football. You can cancel soccer and all the other girl sports.

But keep football, for Murica.

Also, keep cheerleaders. At least the girls.

2020-08-10 11:57:47 AM
They're not getting paid and only a handful of players will go pro so the kids are ultimately not going to risk their lives.

So tiring watching half the country yelling at clouds.

2020-08-10 11:58:17 AM
so is he saying these kids are too stupid to do the right thing if there's no season because they might get bored?

2020-08-10 11:58:17 AM
Ben Sasse is my favorite republican senator.

Which says a lot about republican senators.

2020-08-10 11:58:27 AM
Yes, football is good for the 100 athletes on the team. Who cares about the other thousands of students at the school. Football is important because 100 athletes need it!

2020-08-10 11:58:33 AM
Again, every time you turn around, you find nothing but fear at the heart and center of every single conservative argument.  To be a conservative is to be afraid...of everyone and everything.

2020-08-10 11:59:24 AM
Call me cynical, but I think his position has more to do with the Huskers accounting for 86.4% of the GDP of the state than any concern for student athletes smoking a doob out of boredom.

2020-08-10 11:59:26 AM
Well, Sasse, if college football is cancelled, you can blame both Trump and his acolytes for being so cavalier about COVID in the first place.

Those wussy Europeans had the first wave of it, along with China, and now they're back to playing soccer, mainly because they took the necessary precautions of shutting down in their countries. Except you were too scared of your own base to tell them to STFU, and now the NCAA is shutting down their sports because of your cowardice.

"Businesses are closed and the number of people developing mental health disorders and committing suicides are skyrocketing!"
"Schools are closed and the number of kids going hungry and being abused by their parents are skyrocketing!"
"Sports are closed and the number of athletes turning to drugs is skyrocketing!"

Gee, those sound like big gaps in our social safety net. Maybe we should do a better job funding and providing mental health care and resources for children and families.

*crickets*

In fairness, I didn't play football and unless "the right thing" involved booze, drugs, and girls, I didn't choose it, either.

I'll admit to the "too stupid" part.

And he doesn't care. Most college president's with a big football program don't really care how the sausage gets made regarding football programs they just want to know that the $80 million+ cash cow keeps producing. He and everyone else in power needs the distraction that college football provides, without it "blame Washington" sentiment grows and as a current member of Washington that never bodes well.

You lose the distraction of football, you lose the money to the state, you lose the election.

What could be more American than forcing 160 college kids plus a bunch of coaches, officials, and other staff on to a field with 22 at a time slamming into each other without face masks or any semblance of physical distancing while the viral pandemic continues to rage out of control?

It is fascinating that they recognize they need a culture war issue to campaign on, but their quiver is so empty at this point they are going with "the pandemic is use the excuse the communists are using to cancel sportsball and we can't let them!"

The astronomy program's dudes aren't wearing skin tight outfits that accentuate their bulging, sweaty muscles.  Occasionally ending up in a sweaty manpile.

They won't blame Trump. They'll get their marching orders and blame "Ivory Tower liberal elites" running the "liberal" colleges and universities for "needlessly" canceling Real Red-Blooded American Football.
