I've never tried to uninstall it.  I do remove it from the task bar & start menu (even when it reappears after a larger W10 update) ... however, every once in awhile

I'm actually fairly impressed myself, and it does very well for M365 subscriptions.

For the most part it's okay. But every now & then I find a webpage that won't load properly whether I have the ad blocker on or off. If I copy & paste the site address into Internet Explorer, it almost always works like it should.

This. I have Edge, with UBlock Origin and Ghostery and it's rock solid.

And you can't uninstall it? So what? Don't use it if you don't want to.
Windows has always had applications you can't uninstall. Windows Fax And Scan? Paint? Windows Picture And Fax Viewer? Windows Media Centre? Solitaire? Calculator? All those have come installed on previous Windows versions and no one complained. If you don't want to use them don't use them. I can't believe anyone is that short of hard drive space that having a program installed is an issue. I have a cheap Windows ten inch tablet running W10 that has a 32GB hard drive and I don't worry about space.

Subby needs to grow up, as does the author of that article.

It might be annoying that Edge can't be uninstalled, but it's stuck in Windows 10 for the same reasons IE was - legacy support. At least the new Edge browser allows Microsoft to remove IE finally, but that's because it has the compatible renderer that many businesses still need.

As for Edge itself, it's probably a safer bet than Chrome these days.

Firefox 68.11.0esr?

/It blacks out my laptop's screen whenever I go to a visually complex page.  Like, with photos or video.  Other browsers behave fine.

I'm amused because the only thing I still use Firefox for on my phone is Fark. Chrome never handled very long threads well.

I won't try to uninstall Edge on my PC, but it only gets used on the rare site that croaks on anything else. Usually government sites.

Same with Mac.
In other words: it's impossible to uninstall Safari in OS X El Capitan 10.11 and macOS Sierra 10.12.

For some reason it's only stupid/evil when Microsoft do it.

You choose what to buy and use. I don't have software I don't want on any device I own, and it isn't a very hard goal to achieve.

2020-08-10 12:32:50 AM
The new Edge is nearly identical to Chrome in most respects (being Chromium based this is a no duh). It can install any extension Chrome can, in fact they even let you install extensions right from the Chrome Store. Needless to say this is a huge improvement over the old Edge which forced you to install extensions from the Microsoft Store, a separate app. And many of those extensions seemed to not get updated as frequently as their Chrome counterparts.

What I'm saying is there's just no pleasing some people.

Every once in a great while, I need IE. There will be a SaaS product that I'm using at a job, or even a website, that will only work correctly in IE. But like the meme says, I usually only use it to download another browser.

And it's super aggressive now. The last Windows update, I wake up my computer to find the announcement about the new and improved version of 'Edge', and IIRC, I could only make it go away by killing it in Task Manager. Or giving it s test drive as a browser, but I wasn't going to do that.

mikalmd: Bing ?

Speaking of which, I believe I came across a story a week or two ago (Or maybe ten years, who knows with this timeline?) that said that you cannot use Google as your search engine.

I believe that this is the exact anti-trust shiat that MS got busted for back around '99 or so. Guess they figure that the political climate, at least in the US, is totally conducive to trying again.

Who cares?

I mean that, in all sincerity. It could be the most amazing peice of software ever written. It could do my taxes while convincing my wife that, yes, she does really want a threesome with her hot female friend and I.... And I should still be able to uninstall it.

We went through all this crap many times before, especially with Microsoft and it's browser in the 90s.

There is literally zero reason for Edge to be uninstallable. We know this because...

1.) Windows already works without it

2.) You can literally find the installer and run uninstall from the CLI and remove it.

2020-08-10 1:38:26 AM
you will only be unable to uninstall it for as long as it takes them to get sued in Europe. just like the last time they tried to make IE uninstallable.

2020-08-10 1:39:34 AM
I was using an older safari but it wouldn't talk to a large number of sites after the march 2020 cert expire problem.  Now I'm using a newer version of 11.1 and it crashes every few days and crashes the computer every other week.  This mac won't run the newest shiny so I'm sort of stuck with it since there is no way I'm buying a new mac.

Chrome and firefox don't zoom right.  It is one thing that Safari gets right.  I can zoom in and everything gets bigger not just the stuff that some web dev thinks should get bigger.  Also Safari doesn't seem to use massive amounts of memory to zoom unlike the others.

I thought the MS anti-trust stuff was to stop locking the browser to the OS... that needed to happen. Hopefully the EU's attempts to get that done will work.

I'll make them a deal. I'll quietly accept Edge being installed on my PC if I can get Space Cadet Pinball back with it.

I just hope the company that made Edge doesn't get in to another anti-trust suit over forcing their web browser on everyone else.
