Betting Bezos tickets were cheaper than paying for parking.

Punishable by a fine = legal if you're rich

This is why fines need to be proportional to your wealth.

How about a minimum impound time? First ticket in a year, you get your car back immediately.  Second takes a few hours, third a day, fourth two days, fifth is a week and add two weeks for every ticket after.

Ok. We impound Bezos' Mercedes for a week and then he drives his Jaguar. Impound random poor person's 1997 Toyota Corolla and what the fark are they gonna do?

Not park illegally 4+ times a year?  I didn't say it was a perfect solution.

No but you did prove you lack a working brain. Thats the most abusable system to exploit you could possibly come up with. All you need to fark people over is a fake fire hydrant or some yellow paint

You do realize that this means that parking legally 99% of the time isn't good enough for you? Ever have a jerkass neighbor who calls police about anything? Or live in an area where cops patrol just to issue money-making tickets?

Look, it doesn't matter what you do; it will be exploitable. And, almost always, rich people will be the most able to exploit it.

Simple solution: Day fines. The fine structure is geared to your income so fines impact everyone equally. For example if someone who makes $20,000 pays $100, the guy making $200,000 pays $1000. More importantly it makes it harder (more expensive) for the wealthy to treat fines as user fees.

Couldn't you easily abuse the system now and generate $50 tickets over and over? Also, I didn't say remove the courts from the equation, make it easy to claim a hardship exemption.

Yeah. Cuz poor people don't abuse the system.  Ask all the people who fake heart attacks outside of Atlanta to get free rides into the city on an ambulance.

Here in Illinois we have two mechanisms on traffic tickets (moving violations) for the reason of not letting rich people just do what they want. If you accumulate 3 moving violations within a 12 month period, your license is suspended for 3 months. Rich people (theoretically) can't buy their way out of having their driver license suspended.

Not for parking tickets. You can pay virtually unlimited municipal violations and no one cares about your driver license; it will still be valid.

I lived in NYC for 40 years, I'm very familiar with money making tickets. I didn't get 5 a year because I didn't park like an idiot.

But fine, I understand there are times when you can't find a spot and a tow would suck, even though it's standard procedure in NYC to tow for many parking violations. Adjust the timeframe, add exemptions, it's not like my suggestion has ANY legal weight, it's a discussion starter FFS.

This raises the question of why would a rich person bother driving to begin with? Hire a personal driver. Even better - eliminates the need to bother with parking. The driver can either park the car somewhere and wait for a pickup call, endlessly drive around the block if there's no parking, etc.

Who farking cares if some metermaid takes advantage of the world's richest man like this? He can park his car legally, and if that was just too much farking trouble he could buy the building next to him, bulldoze it, and build a parking lot for just himself.

All this white knighting is always the same, pretending either that the world's richest man is somehow going to be taken advantage of, or that he has so much money any attempt to hold him to any kind of account will just burden those not able to pay their way around it. So we have no choice but to let this asshole continue to be an asshole.

It's more to do with rich people and sports cars. If you're rich enough to drive a 911 Turbo S around and you don't care about the occasional $150 speeding ticket, the license suspension mechanism keeps you from just speeding everywhere and tossing a few Grants at the occasional cop who stops you.

No. The parking people eventually get a memo telling them to stop ticketing on [insert block].

Friend of mine worked for parking enforcement. He was ticketing a repeat offender who parked in the handicap spot (without a valid permit) at the country club. After a number of times the city manager sent him a memo: "STOP TICKETING THE RED BMW AT THE COUNTRY CLUB."

Wow you thought my comment was white knighting Bezos.  It was actually the exact opposite as in he took total advantage of his ability to say fark off to laws us plebes can't afford to and nowhere in my post did I say that was okay and not a dick move.

2020-08-09 2:31:05 PM
Quick look around online suggests the tickets were for the contractors working at the job site, not Bezos's personal vehicle.  I dislike the guy as much as anyone else, but contractors and construction workers getting tickets on a daily basis is just a routine part of big-city construction as far as I've witnessed it.  In Boston the construction guys often end up just parking at meters or in 2-hour limit zones because there is no lot or open area on the site for them all to park.  The difference here is an individual was paying the fines instead of a construction company (or the business that hired them).

Some people have no idea how the ultra wealthy live. Jeff doesn't have to *buy* another car if one is towed. He can *ask* some company that is in his supply chain, and they will *give* him a car just for the hope they will continue to do business with them.

When you're that rich, everything is given to you. He doesn't even pay taxes.

Probably. But for people who are enthusiasts and enjoy driving, that doesn't help them.

I got around it by getting a driver license from New Mexico. That's a state that doesn't suspend a license for speeding tickets. It's unlimited, and they don't suspend it. Or at least they didn't; I don't know if that's been changed.

The "day fine" idea is the way to go, but I'd tweak it a bit.  I don't know why this isn't the case when any money comes into play in civil, municipal or criminal affairs.  Should work the same for bail, any government fines, etc.

If someone like Bezos were arrested for a low-level crime, his bail should be, say, $100 billion.  Someone working minimum wage, $5000 or something (not doing the math perfectly here, you get the point.)

It actually shouldn't be based on income, but wealth- two very different things.  Anything from traffic tickets to bail to court fees to legal representation to court-decided fines.
