Yep.  Gutting social security ironically might be the thing that finally gets through the thick skulls of many of his uneducated, poor Republican supporters or those that were never otherwise paying attention.

I can't count the number of times I've spoken with older poor people that talked about their next (pending) social security check.  These sorts of people had never saved for retirement and a paltry monthly check was the only thing keeping them solvent.

The smartest thing Democrats can do in purple or red states is to emphasize what the destruction of social security would mean, especially to people that have contributed to it for decades.

The fun bit might be if they can trick him into saying, "No, we'll raise money through other taxes" & get Biden to run ads telling his voters that Donnie's gonna raise your taxes like HW Bush did.

Sadly most of them won't care or won't get it until it actually slaps them in the face. It's so easy for them to vote against their own best interest because it takes so long to hit them personally.

If Democrats are going to make any inroads into rural areas, they are going to have to go after people like this. People that don't normally vote. Not everyone that lives out here is a knuckle dragging, MAGA hat wearing, racial slur shouting asshole. However, the ones that are will NEVER change their minds about anything. I wonder about how the message will be received.  Many people getting Social Security think that ending it means they still get "their money" which apparently is in a big vault somewhere collecting interest.   If the perception is "I still get mine, but the lazy poors won't" it could be a gold mine of older voters that have been looking at their voting options.  If that perception is a lump sum of "their money", it could shift enough of the wondering right voters back firmly to the right.

Yeah it wont happen to them because it was supposed to happen to "those people" like years ago the Trump voter that was upset over him doing something about and said she was mad he wasn't hurting the people that were supposed to be hurt. They wont think it will happen to them until they open the mail and see that small check.
The dems really need to hammer this home like how the GOP was all about death panels during the ACA debate. They need to take the gloves off and stop doing the "They go low, we go high" stuff. They need to go full Lincoln project for at least the next four election cycles and use a bit more fear in their ads.

In the arguments about the popular vote vs Electoral College, I think there are a significant number of R leaning people that don't vote because they know their state is going to vote their way (OK, KS, etc) or their vote won't matter (rural CA, NY and other blue states).

If I were doing ads for Joe Biden I'd have something running today on every program that skews 50+ showing something like (just spitballing here) an older couple waiting for their social security check, having a harried, overworked mailman deliver it saying "Sorry, Trump is closing down our post office, so I don't know when your next check is going to make it," and the old couple saying "Thank God it's finally here now, we're out of food and medicine" then opening the envelope and taking out the check to see it's for $0.00 and a note falls out reading "Took the money for tax cuts for the rich!" with a smiling Donald Trump.

It always has been the thing that would do it. The GOP has been careful to make social security untouchable for decades. Now, the chickens of their economic policies are coming home to roost, and they're backed into a corner. Normally, a clever arrangement would be worked with the Democrats that lets them save face with their voters. BUT, ...

Clinton won several, Obama won Indiana.  The next step is to stop talking about nuking them from orbit and start putting resources into the state.  Have an agenda other than "not as bad as those assholes", significant help for people in those areas, and talk to as many people as possible, face to face.  Might get to learn some helpful things ourselves

Easily disproven lies like "This is an attack on social security." and "Now that some less engaged voters appear to be catching wise to this, perhaps Democrats should not vaguely insist that their social security is completely safe forever."

Hunh, I honestly thought we'd have to wait for Monday to start seeing the tap-dance around "it's just a reform to the payroll 'tax'," but I guess this'll do for an opening act. If the Democrats have half a brain between the lot of them, they're not going to let go of "Trump is plotting to destroy Social Security." If he weren't such a dumbshiat, he wouldn't have even mentioned the payroll tax, but let's be honest: he doesn't know what the payroll tax is, or how it funds Social Security.

"Trump is going to destroy social security" is the new talking point, and the Democrats should use it as a club to beat the GOP with, and the GOP has nobody to blame for that but Trump, and themselves for enabling Trump. I hope they get eradicated in the next election.

I feel like this is some kind of bargaining attempt by Trump to get the Dems to back something else, except the Dems are now "Nope. Go ahead and do it." So? What does that have to do with politics? Trump has projected the image: removing the funding system behind Social Security. The Democrats can shape the shadow: that's a dismantling of Social Security. The only "win" for Trump now is to actually dismantle SS, because anything else means the Democrats can claim victory.

Politics is entirely about images and projection.

Meh. I doubt that people who are fine with GOP governance are waiting for the Dems to move further left before they vote in their own best interests.

Ok. So, you'll run ads telling people they won't get your social security check, and then when people still get their social security checks, you will...what?

"Because we stopped him"

Except you haven't done anything

So? What does that have to do with politics? Trump has projected the image: removing the funding system behind Social Security. The Democrats can shape the shadow: that's a dismantling of Social Security. The only "win" for Trump now is to actually dismantle SS, because anything else means the Democrats can claim victory.

Politics is entirely about images and projection.

If the Democratic Party just let's them do it without putting up a fight, they'd kind of have a point.

But it sounds like we have already lost, somehow.  If we put up a fight, and prevent disaster, then we were stupid to put up a fight all along.  If we don't put up a fight, and social security collapses, we'll be blamed.  Can't fight.  Can't not fight.  Both have risks.

Maybe just do the right thing and damn the political calculations?

But the money comes from somewhere.   It comes from that payroll tax.  so, later in the year they're gonna say because Social security is running out of money, we will need to reduce SS payments, or you have to be older to get it, or no cost of living increase because the money is not there.

One part of me is saying, YES AWESOME HIGH FIVES

Another part of me, the logical part, is screaming NO AA NO.

Fark, dude, no. Americans will use your claim to discredit the Dems and say that is election fraud.

There is a reason I just post on Fark, instead of send my resume or ideas south. Their xenophobia is unparalleled in history. If any outsider contributes to them, the Americans who are scared of Others will use it to discredit them, and the Americans who claim they are not afraid of the outside world will prove they really are scared, by listening to the xenophobes and giving them literally the most valuable, high priced space with the biggest audience.

They are all terrified of outsiders. Rather than patiently marginalizing xenophobes, and considering their rants as something that can be engaged with or simply left alone, they "think critically" about xenophobes and spend hours and hours paying attention to them, because for every American, xenophobia must be heard and is necessary. We can't actually contribute, without it backfiring. All we can do is fart around on web forums.

Bennie Crabtree: Do you know the way to Mordor: and I'm not even American!

I see your point. I guess on my part I was feeling completely helpless over here watching the descent into madness that American politics has become, and wanted to do something which unexpectedly succeeded.

However, this was my way of working under the radar.

For one, people don't know my real name here.

Two, Fark has become almost completely anti-Trump these days, and for good reason. So there is not much chance of anyone here going onto right wing social media and spreading around what I did.

Three, what is illegal to do is for any foreigner to contribute money to an American election campaign. I have never done this, and know that there is nothing wrong with my quietly sharing ideas. Republicans might have a different idea on that, but they are not going to know.
