When eating until full, they averaged the equivalent of a large pizza. When eating until maximally full, they ate about two large pizzas, Betts said.

Wait.... what?  One person?

10 slices for 2700-3200 calories

I'm kind of on board with that. I always thought that you should be able to pick up a pizza slice with your hand and eat it.

Doesn't mean it isn't still delicious, though.

How 'occasional' is occasional?  Once a year?  A month?  A week?

/a day?

There's really great thin crust in Chicago and that's what everyone I know in Chicago (including me) usually eats.

We get deep dish when visitors are in town. Kind of like going to Fisherman's Wharf when you live in San Francisco.

I cannot eat a large pizza by myself, in one sitting.

I can at best eat 1/2 of a large pizza.

I made pizza for dinner this evening. Thin crust, light on the red sauce, garlic and onion powder, fresh mozzarella, grated parm and a few slices of pepperoni. I really wish I'd had some basil, but it was pretty darn good.

Eating a whole large pizza is really bad for me, but I feel it is absolutely doable for anyone.

But it needs to be my "breakfast" for the day. I have made the mistake of doing breakfast and lunch, and having a whole pizza for dinner. Bad night. All hail the porceline throne.

Pizza is great but some people take it to far.  My cousin would probably eat pizza 7 days a week.  Year and a half in and still constantly....pizza...pizza.....frozen...takeout.....

I at the moment don't want any, which sucks cause it's great, but holy crap I can only wonder what it does to his head, since he's surprisingly a trumper.

It probably helps that there's still a decent variety of stuff, grains, vegetables, meats and cheese, but christ if you refuse to eat salad I won't be surprised to hear Qanon conspiracies.

To quote the merely adequate myself
New York pizza isn't a pizza, it's "ketchup and cheese on a matzo"

By the way, what did a casserole ever do to you? You can get great lasagna in Chi-town too. Oven baked mac and cheese is a casserole. Who hates a casserole? What have you got against slow cooked food?

Yeah, we can handle occasional cheat days. Even regular cheat days with a decent interval between those cheats. The issue isn't the occasional feast--because let's face it, we're geared towards that thanks to evolution--but more the constant intake of garbage.

I'm back to biking, I'm back to work, which means I'm not eating when I'm bored, and I'm back to a healthier diet. That doesn't mean that I won't have pizza or a big mess of pasta with sausage and cheese, but those are only occasional things. During the week I go for a fair amount of fruit and veg, a decent amount of lean protein, and carbs in the form of rice to load up for the rides. Not back to 20 miles a day yet, but working at it, with months down from that sort of work out. If you're exercising on the regular, you can easily afford a cheat here and there. Even some Little Debbies as a regular treat, because you KNOW that you're going to use it. The issue isn't with the cheat, but consuming trash with EVERY meal.

Pizza is great. It's got vegetable, grains, dairy and meat all in one go. It's all the food groups piled on a plate. You've got enough salt and fat to kick your brain into satisfaction, because in the wild, when we were troop apes we needed those sorts of calories and the salt when we could get them. But those sources were rarer then. Same with sugars. Couldn't find honey everywhere, or ripe fruit all the time, but our ancestors took advantage of sources as they came upon them. We're designed to lay away calories for lean times. As are pretty much most animals. The issue comes when you gorge at EVERY meal.

I find that there is a decreasing rate of "return" with each additional slice that you eat. That first slice is amazing. The second one is good. The third one is OK. And so on...

So, whenever I make or order pizza, I only eat two slices and freeze the rest. Then, I later eat the rest two slices at a time (after heating them up). Makes the pizza last longer, and it's always a treat to eat.

CSB, I know.

I've never had a slice of deep dish pizza that I couldn't pick up and eat. Made correctly, the layer of cheese keeps the sauce from making the crust soggy. Hell, my (then) two year old son ate an entire slice of Giordano's in his hand when my parents were visiting after his little brother was born.

/Had my annual birthday deep dish pizza last night.

I had a roommate years ago who didn't drink, eat sugar, or really enjoy anything. One night a month he would eat a slice of pizza and then he would sit in regret for half an hour and then go on an extremely long run to get rid of it.

Weird dude.

My stance on this, too. Every time I travel to Chicago, and in the mood for pizza, I'll head to a joint with thin crust.

Sure, Giordano's or Malnati's has it's charm, and place, I guess for those visiting. It's the small places that really churn out some great pies though.

Ahhh, Chicago style pizza. Literally a pizza pie.

I have one from here at least once a year (it's a town over).

Featured on "You gotta eat here".

I can normally manage to eat two slices, a third if I have properly pre-gamed. The rest come home and feeds me for the weekend.

Come to think of it, I am overdue.....

Eating big, calorie dense meals when they are available is a survival mechanism for many animals, ourselves included. it helps offset the times of scarcity, winters, droughts, etc. But there aren't really many times of famine in the first world these days and high-calorie low-nutrient food is abundant and cheap, while we don't do a lot of hard labor. So we get fat. Our bodies have an imperative to store calories for a famine that will never come.

People saying they couldn't eat half of a pizza are either physically unwell or have mental barriers against it. You were MADE to be able to put an occasional windfall feast to good use.
