They did that in MPLS too. I don't get it. If your goal is to get people to go home and chill out this seems counterproductive.

It's not. The goal is provocation to try and get protestors to respond violently so that they have "legal" justification to use excessive force.

I don;t think it's even that. It's just a police riot. Their response to calls for reform is just to lash out and luxuriate in their impunity. it's more like a reflex than anything with a rationale.

It's both, really. They get to flaunt their freedom from repercussions, and if they can get a response from the crowd, then they can enjoy beating them without anyone caring thanks to the years of "If police hurt someone, it's because they did something to deserve it" propaganda.

We're going to need to send the Feds back in to protect the private property from the local police.

So, this is what "Law Enforcement" looks like in the United States.

This getting passed along to the ACLU?

Seriously, how does Portland still have a budget for their PD after 70+ days of sustained protests.  Those officers must be pulling in OT, and their equipment budget must be in shambles.  What's the city going to do when the protesters finally win and their PD budget is overdrawn by millions of taxpayer dollars.  Where are you going to make cuts so the city can keep funding this nonsense.

I smell lawsuit!!! I wonder if a lawyer would like a slice of the action since this type of police stupidity should cost them.

Man, am I tired of the fascism in this country.  And I'm white, suburban and nearly upper class.  Can't imagine being a person of color with the police this bad.  So many elections have felt like which slightly different direction do we want to head for the next while, but his one seems so much more like our soul as a country is at stake.
The number of people that are okay with this clear police abuse is alarming on the one hand, but explains how we ended up in this circus.  Empathy needs to be taught in school, because it's rarer than common sense it seems.

And unlike war zones they can't rely on friendly forces to protect them.  They're more likely to get beaten or shot with projectiles or sprayed with mace.

Portland police were losing their authoritarian-violence-induced erections, so they decided to pick up from where the Feds left off.

Your boot-licking is off-topic. Try explaining why it's okay for police to puncture the tires of that van. That's criminal destruction of property and that SOB should be arrested.

Last month there was film of cops puncturing the tires of a whole mess of protestors' and journalists' empty cars in a parking lot. That okay with you too? Maliciously damaging people's property is fine when the police do it?

Let's compare the way protestors treat the elderly to the police:

A van like that will require 10-ply light truck tires, which cost considerably more than $500 for a set.

Here is (lame) excuse sent to Snopes after an inquiry about Minneapolis slashings.

https://www.snopes.com/fact-check/slashed-tires-protests/

"State Patrol troopers strategically deflated tires ... in order to stop behaviors such as vehicles driving dangerously and at high speeds in and around protesters and law enforcement," Gordon said.
Gordon said the patrol also targeted vehicles "that contained items used to cause harm during violent protests" such as rocks, concrete and sticks.
"While not a typical tactic, vehicles were being used as dangerous weapons and inhibited our ability to clear areas and keep areas safe where violent protests were occurring," he said. ... Deputies from Anoka County followed state orders and joined the patrol and also cut the tires on vehicles on Washington Avenue, said Anoka County Sheriff's Lt. Andy Knotz.

Not really. That's a Sprinter 2500, I own one. Replacement tires run about $600, probably $700 out the door. Not excusing the actions of the cops for a second, they belong in jail.

CthulhuCalling: I'm wondering if/why knives are an authorized part of the uniform.

Weirdly, as much as ACAB I don't have an issue with knives being standard issue.  Medics carry them too, example situation, you're called to an auto collision, the vehicle is flipped and the gas tank is leaked, the driver is tangled in their safety belt.  You NEED a knife to cut that belt and safely remove them from the situation.

Knives are incredible useful equipment for a lot of different situations.

Not this one though, fark that officer, he should be fired and drawn up on destruction of property charges.

The Portland Police Dept needs to go the way of the Minneapolis PD.  Completely dissolved, and never rehire any of these fascists again.  The Democratic mayor and city council needs to make this happen.  If they don't, then they should be prepared to be replaced by someone who will.

Having had personal experience now in several cities, I can conclusively say ACAB and they all need to be demolished.
