WTF you idiot, there might be no fans in the stadium but there are still cameras everywhere.

2020-08-07 12:39:50 AM
Huh? Looks like giving high fives to me, with the camera catching it at an unfortunate angle.

SurfaceTension: Huh? Looks like giving high fives to me, with the camera catching it at an unfortunate angle.

His elbow and fingers were fully extended. That was a sieg heil.

Compare and contrast the guy behind him, who has his elbow out ready to receive a socially-distanced high-five.

The first player bends his elbow for him.

It's the follow-up gesture that kills his apology. He turned around, pointed at the guy behind him who had the bent arm for elbow bumps, and then extended his arm again. It's clear from his body language that he thought his extended arm was a joke.

In the context of giving his teammates high fives. Makes no sense that that would be a Nazi salute there. It assumes the complicity of the other players and coaches. I'm just not seeing it.

He was the only one whose arm was outstretched like that. Everyone else was doing elbow bumps.

Also, he did it a second time in that clip. He was facing the stands for the second heil. It's extremely difficult to accidentally do that gesture, then walk a few steps and change the direction you're facing, and then accidentally do that same gesture a second time, all in the span of about ten seconds.

The other players and coaches are not complicit in his Nazism.

He was just working on his Nazi impersonation.  If you don't use it, you lose it, amirite?

It's even more loser-pathetic when they pull this shiat. They see clever, we see stupid.

1. Come up with something original. Between the "ok sign" and this, you're proving yourself unimaginative and fundamentally an inferior race. When "zee homosexuals and zee Juden" have built multinational industries on raw creativity, you're basically disproving your own thesis that straight white people are superior by recycling dusty old gang signs as step 1.

2. Own it, cowards. When confronted, every Nazi pretends it's something else. They tell themselves it's trolling, but it just proves "the master race" is spineless and has to get dopamine rushes by a childish game of faux-pas. "Tehe! We're so clever and they're so triggered! Quick, someone say fark and then say you actually said duck. OMG so triggered!" Probably the inbreeding again.

Yes, it makes no sense that would be a nazi salute. That doesn't change the fact that he unambiguously gave the nazi salute.

In the context of giving his teammates high fives, why would his palm be facing down at approx 45° angle and not facing the teammates?

From his body language, it looks like he hadn't realized he was giving the Seig Heil - he laughed it off and repeated the gesture as a sort of "Oh yeah...derp. Look at me being dumb!"

/have zero reason to defend the guy, and for all I know he did it knowing full well what it was, but it makes more sense that he just wasn't thinking

This is what I got out of it. He didn't know what he was doing at first, then laughed about it.

I saw one person commenting on it saying, 'they just don't care how blatant they are about it anymore'. In that short clip, there is no reason to believe he threw it up with intent.

Maybe joking about it the second time was in poor taste, but the dude isn't a nazi.

/Cue the links to his social media to show that he is in fact a nazi and I completely misread the clip.

I used to have a boss that would point at everything/everybody with his middle finger. I thought it was weird at first but didn't take it personally.

Exactly what I see and by far the most likely scenario. Hopefully guy doesn't lose his job over a non-issue.

no one accidentally throws up a nazi salute or doesn't know that gesture is one, especially when high 5ing or bumping elbows, both of which may involve your arm but vastly different angle

odds are he was trying to be funny and doesn't actually believe any neo-nazi stuff, but jokes like that just don't fly anymore.  own it as a extremely failed attempt at humor say you don't believe that shiat and maybe some other else like a charitable donation to a holocaust-related cause

I don't know they guy and his politics but indie have to point out to a friend cheering at a concert once "either the hand stays closed, the elbow stays very well bent or the arm is straight up" because man did it look bad from my angle.

[Fark user image 822x576]

So, who on the Oakland Athletics is assigned the job of exposing and addressing racial inequities in our country?  Is that the MoneyBall nerd?  Because, I thought Oakland was focused on keeping the money on the field and wouldn't have the budget to hire someone that galavants across the country exposing and addressing racial inequities in the US..nor stock the soda machine.

I dunno...  I'm beginning to doubt the sincerity of this apology.

They aren't allowed to give high fives due to Covid rules, so they do other random things like bump shoulders, or this.

Well yeah. It's obviously a "Please don't fire me" apology.

Do I think he didn't know what he was doing? No, he knew what he was doing.
Do I think he did it with malice? No. I think he's just a dumb "sports bro" who thought he was being edgy and funny.

Your two points conflict.  If he knew what he was doing, at least the first time, then he did it with malice.  One cannot use the Nazi salute without malice.  If one does some arm action that resembles a Nazi salute, without malice, it was not a Nazi salute.

If no malice, then his action may have poor optics, but the offense is not necessarily on him as it is on the offended.

Forty years of calling everything racist resulted in half the country not giving a shiat when the media called the leading presidential candidate a racist.  If everything is racist, then nothing is racist.  But they'll never learn.

I watched this a number of times this morning and just can't figure out WTF he was thinking.  His "apology" didn't really explain anything and didn't even accurately describe what we saw.  That wasn't some modified elbow bump, it was a straight up Nazi salute.  Why?  If he was joking about something that we couldn't hear or see, then he should say so.  Instead he just issues a CYA without honest context.  Someone else bent your arm for you, dumbass, and then you turn around and do it again.  It looked nothing like a high five I've ever seen, that's for farkin sure.  With a high five you usually have your arm bent, at least a bit, with your hand upright.  We saw the whole thing in motion, so this wasn't some odd still frame that doesn't tell the whole story.  For some reason I feel doubtful of his Nazi status, but I'm 100% confident that he's an idiot.
