How about we find a way to eliminate them instead?

I really hate the insistence that all streets, neighborhoods, parking  lots, etc. need to be brightly lit 24 hours a day.  Shut that crap off.

The headlights arms race makes me ragey.  Three banks of ultra-bright cold white headlamps totally makes you safer by blinding everyone else.  Your 'fierce' looking truck screams "I'm an insecure dbag who cares about this image because I have no real markers of status in my life."

I feel ya, but it deters rapists and other criminals.

Are there rapists and criminals on the road? And I've yet to see a study that says that is the case, but have read plenty that state people 'feel safer.
If people are going this route, get them off the streets (useless waste of energy, lots of light pollution), and put every light in a parking lot on a motion sensor.

I stand corrected on the crime studies, just checked again. Half of them were done by lighting companies whish is why I blew them off. My motion sensor comment stands, and there is zero reason for a street to be daylight at 3am.

Dim the lights?  While I'd like to get a viewable night sky back, there's a bar/restaurant near me that has some bright floodlights and is across a 2-lane road (plus suicide lane) from a brightly lit billboard.  At night you can see hundreds, if not thousands, of bats flying between them at an awesome bug buffet.
