If Biden wins and Congress turns blue, tax the absolute shiat out of these companies and their owners.

But what other platform gives me the chance to learn the head cheerleader from my high school secretly always had a "thing" for me, and she'd really love to get in contact with me...so she can save my life with a blend of Jesus and Essential Oils while her husband, who flunked remedial science, can show me memes of Aubrey Huff and Curt Schilling explaining why wearing a mask to Walmart is the same as shoving George Washington's face in the only porta-shiatter at the El Paso Chili Cook Off?

Lolol fair point.

In all seriousness though, this whole point of view about FB seems like a really broad brush to use, doesn't it?

Like, yeah. There are totally tons of Russian bots hanging out there, and disinfo pages, and all kinds of stuff that sucks a lot of ass.

There are also lots of people who are more well-informed about local elections than I am, who I've known for years, and have zero reason to suspect of being Russian spies. Not to mention a very large, very vocal, highly entertaining +/ witty leftist population that is slowly restoring my faith in humanity.

FFS it's just a tool. If you suck at using the tool yeah, don't use it, maybe find a new line of work if it's that frustrating.

But don't denigrate the entire tool over it.

I enjoy fb by being a member of various groups: music, art, dogs, architecture, etc. so a visit to fb is a fun little distraction for me. Lots of pics of neat stuff and sometimes interesting discussions.
I guess I'm lucky as well in that the few friends I have on fb aren't the kind to post much of anything, let alone crazy shiat.

Yeah, if you're relying on Uncle Daddy's Patriot Central for your information, maybe you're a farking idiot, but if your friend who's more politically active than you posts something to the tune of "hey, a bunch of disinfo is going around about election day, it's actually on this day, not this day that people are spreading", it's different.

So Trumpers are worried that all the mail-in votes for Joe Biden are going to end up in Barack Obama's fireplace. How civic-minded of them.

So much fkin logic on this topic.

People on Fark are sharp enough to realize that you can't just leave fascism alone, yet when a social media platform gets overrun by fascists, everybody starts blowing themselves over how smart they are for leaving it alone.

Facebook is a horrible platform, period, full stop.  Even worse if you're trying to get factual information out of it.  I use it for documenting major life events, thereby allowing me to bypass family reunions.  Nothing more, nothing less.

I never had IG, but I did delete Facebook a few years ago.  I'm personally boycotting everything owned by Zuckerberg.

He's been acting as a private sector Goebbels for years now.  He's more than happy to profit from misinformation and doesn't really care about how that misinformation affects the real world.

From platforming conspiracy theorists, anti-vaxxers, racists and misinformation from anyone willing to pay him advertising fees, he's done more to damage America than even Fox News or Putin could dream of.  He's a POS and should shunned from American society and should be locked up for aiding and abetting treason.

LOL right. "My argument is correct, and that's just the end of it." Nice.

That example I used was an actual thing, that happened.

People were spreading disinformation about the actual date of a local election, and people who were in the know were counteracting it.

Don't run from nuance.

I think Facebook would be well served by editors.  The fact that they police hardly anything at all makes them barely a notch above reading /b/.

I'm with you on that.

For a minute, the fact-checking was actually doing some good. Oh, the anger from the right was absolutely delectable. More recently, though (probably within the last two months, that I've noticed) they've been slacking.

This shiat reminds me of something my ex told me, years back.

The person she was dating before me was pretty abusive/controlling (also repeatedly drunk, violent and patently insane), and had this thing about her watching It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia.

Specifically, she was not allowed to watch it, because, in his words "it teaches people to do shiatty things."

I made the point over several years that you shouldn't be looking for life lessons from TV shows. This really reminds me of that.

So, I should believe your conspiracy theories but not other conspiracy theories?

I think maybe this is why platforms are hesitant to interfere in matters of speech.

Facebook started as garbage and will probably always be garbage. But it wouldn't have as much power if people would stop GIVING it power. Stop reading Facebook garbage aloud on the air in lieu of actual news. Close down/cancel your Facebook account, if you have one. When someone says they saw something on Facebook, instead of listening to their derp, just turn around and leave. It shouldn't be a part of your daily life.

That's what keeps people on it. Everybody they know (supposedly) is on Facebook, esp. if they're middle-aged or older. (shrug) You're gonna have to cut it off completely and if that means you don't hear from your "friends" or relatives as much, is that really a bad thing?

A Millennial I work with (she has a kid) was telling me yesterday about the "drama" among her peer group (I'm assuming mostly women) over politics and said she stopped reading her Facebook page every day because she was sick of it and also wasted a bunch of time on it. She didn't close/quit/cancel, though. Not yet.

Facebook's power is in the numbers. As long as they have the numbers, companies will continue to pay Facebook for exposure to that audience. That's the only way it makes money. Advertising.

Facebook should be nuked from orbit. It's responsible for more evil than good in this world, and I say that as someone who was on it just long enough to reunite with the love of my life.

If there's any good soul at Facebook, they'll burn the place to the ground, salt the Earth where it fell, and ensure that the servers are trashed in every remote backup location so that the that festering den of lies and stupidity never comes back.

Believe it or not, there are things that get posted on Facebook that come from other places on the internet. That's part of its functionality, is allowing links from outside sources, like the BBC, Al-Jazeera, and others. What you're suggesting seems more like an excuse to be lazy. You need to be able to discern between things that are real, and things that are not. This is possible. I know it's a pain in the ass on mobile devices, but if you're not willing to vet things that you hear about online from anywhere, including Facebook, maybe get off the internet entirely, because it doesn't seem like a good fit.

That's what keeps people on it. Everybody they know (supposedly) is on Facebook, esp. if they're middle-aged or older. (shrug) You're gonna have to cut it off completely and if that means you don't hear from your "friends" or relatives as much, is that really a bad thing?

That's what keeps youon it, maybe. I stay on there because I've finally found people who think like I do, speak like I do, and sound a lot like most of the people I respect on Fark, but are considerably closer to my age demo, and are therefor more innately comfortable with the internet, in general.

Also, because as someone mentioned upthread, the art groups are absolutely fantastic. Also, the leftist tag groups have become a wonderful source of productive amusement, which leads me to my last, and most important reason for staying:

I am on there to annoy Clevon. If I can make Clevon mad enough to fark up his day, he might make a mistake, as one does when they're angry, and that makes me feel pretty good.

As it turns out, those tag groups I mentioned contain thousands of people (sometimes hundreds of thousands in one group), who are on there for that very same reason. And when the thousands of us go annoy Clevon together, it's...I can't describe it. Cathartic is not even remotely close to effectively describing this feeling. It's right.

It's overdue, and it's beautiful.

Not yet.

Millennial are hit and miss, with their level of engagement in this fight. Some of them help out, some of them stick their heads in the sand, or post about inane bullshiat, and recoil at any sign of political debate. Gen Z, though?

Lol they own it. Facebook may have its own reputation, but make no mistake - that platform is Gen Z's kitchen, as far as social discourse is concerned, and it pisses of the right endlessly

Facebook's power is in the numbers. As long as they have the numbers, companies will continue to pay Facebook for exposure to that audience. That's the only way it makes money. Advertising.

Correct. Facebook's other power is that it's ubiquitous. It's hooked into tons of services, it has a decent live streaming platform that's easily accessible to a fark ton of people, and it is widely being used by protesters on the ground, to document incidents of police brutality, or to share information with other activists.

I have a ton of respect for people on FARK, but this topic is one that I feel a lot of people here are oversimplifying.

Facebook isn't necessary. It really isn't. Use it if you want, but you don't NEED it. (shrug)

Most of us don't. Facebook supposedly has 1.6 billion users. But many of those are corporate accounts, because Facebook has become the de facto Yellow Pages. And an undetermined, but not small, number of those accounts aren't people at all.

I've lived my life just fine so far without Facebook or Twitter or Insta or any of that crap. If everybody's gramma thinks she needs Facebook to "keep up with her family," well, quite frankly, that's sad. But whatever, people got a right to do whatever sad shiat they want. That it seems to bother them that not everybody feels the same way is amusing to me.

Wow, okay, so the entire world does not mimic your lifestyle. There are a lot of other people out here, remember? We might have other reasons for using that platform.

I'm glad you've found a comfortable groove to settle into. Hope it's nice and cozy in there, but try not being arrogant enough to assume that if it works that way for you, it works that way for everybody.
