macarons are very pretty, but I can't stand meringue, so I class it along with that abomination inedible fondant-plastic stuff from those horrific cake-battle tv programs.

Meringue at least has flavor whether you like it or not, which can't really be said of fondant.  Though with macarons, meringue is merely an ingredient so its flavor is kind of lost since its mostly there for structure.  It's the filling driving most of the flavor, with a hint of almond from the cookie.
