Did she lie down in front of it in the mud in her house coat?

Anyone seen any dolphins recently?

$460 US, or $1840 per month. That seems pretty reasonable for a house with 2 acres in the coastal suburbs of the 2nd biggest city in the country.

One time, when I was a kid, my dad and I were playing on construction equipment at a work site.  He started a grader (or some kind of big-ass tractor) and couldn't figure out how to turn it off so we ran.

Does she have any idea how much damage that excavator would suffer if it were to run over her?

Oh, sure, and the rest of the time they are old, selfish, "I've got mine", stubborn boomers until they do something you like.  Then they are "badass", "get off my lawn", "work on my gran torino".

"Beryl Yates, 77, and her husband Rick moved into their Woodford rental last year in the Moreton Bay area and claim their landlord told them it was where they'd spend the rest of their lives.

But developers recently bought the land and are now set to evict them when their current two-year lease ends."

Sorry, Grandma, but what the landlord told you matters a hell of a lot less than what is actually written in your lease. Yeah, it sucks that you thought you would be spending the rest of your life there but when your lease is up you are out the door. Your landlord is under no obligation to renew the lease, and neither are the new owners. So take the developer up on his offer to help cover moving expenses! Otherwise you are going to have to pay for all of that yourself. And if you play your cards right you might even be able to get them to cover having everything packed up for you. I know you want to stay there but that is simply not possible once your lease is up so take advantage of those generous offers to help you out!

Yeah, that is what I would say to the granny. Well, either that or, "Tough luck, granny. Get out!"

Hmm, hitchhiking? Never tried it. But, I have a really nice towel I could take with me if I ever did decide to give it a go. But first I would want to hop on down to The Red Lion pub for a pint, to stiffen my nerves.

Why hitchhike when you could fly?  It's easy, just throw yourself at the ground and miss.

I hate shiat like this.Throwing an elderly couple out of their beloved forever home just for a few hundred thousand bucks when an easement could have been made. So much for promises. Needless to say, the developer isn't going to give an inch. All he's thinking about is money to be made by slamming up another development. Soon the world will be one huge development.

Ooohhhh!  Granny don't own the property, They were renting.
Lease runs out in 2 years so they have plenty of time to "Bugger off" if they live that long.

You do realize the lovely old couple dont own the land...so it is NOT by definition their forever home.  They signed a 2 year lease...when its up...they will be removed.

1. A rental is NEVER a forever home. It's always temporary accommodation because ultimately someone else owns it and strangely enough ownership does come with certain rights. An owner may wish to move in themselves, sell, or tear the place down.

2. What promise was made? The article indicates the previous owner may have made such a promise but there doesn't appear to be anything in writing. I work in property management and I've yet to see a lease guaranteeing someone occupancy in perpetuity. I doubt very much such a promise was made because a knowledgeable landlord would know it would devalue the property and basically make it unsaleable until the couple voluntarily ceased occupancy.

3. Yes, developers do think about money. That's why they're in business. Same as every other for-profit business. Hell, even not for profit businesses think about money so they can break even. If you rolled into work today and your boss said "from now on we're not going to pay you" would you stay or are you just in it for the money?

4. Do you live in a cave, or a hollowed out tree? Perhaps you bought a parcel of land and built your own house by hand? No? Well then chances are some evil developer built your home.

Here's a suggestion: If property developers are so greedy and the development process so unfair why don't you try finding a home that wasn't built by one. Now try and figure out how to house people in cities without development. New York has a population of about 18 million. Why don't you explain to us how you can provide safe housing for 18 million people in a dense urban environment without "development".

True to some degree, but someone determined enough to take a squabble to the media and court can usually force a few concessions. Developers don't want to be seen as implacable monsters, because they know they are and it would upset things if too many people found out the truth.*

*Offer not valid where the developer owns the whole town.

Rik01 is quite possibly the farthest person Fark has ever had from a squatter. Inveterate cranky old man who detests urban growth and loss of ecosystems, yes, but that's not the same thing.
