Swatting is not a "prank".  The intent is to get someone killed.  They should involve serious jail time.

Alright, you find something to do in a rocket capsule while you wait for pickup.

Nope. Maybe, the police should not be so easily 🐐 into killing.
Because no one else could get away with being tricked. They'd be in trouble.

Swatting is not a joke.  It's not funny.  Prank calls aren't very funny and I grew up during the Jerky Boys heyday and then the Prank yankers.

This isn't even prank calling.

FTA: a male on a social media app threatened to "SWAT" an occupant of the home after she refused to speak with him. Earlier in the day, the same man had pizzas delivered to the home, which residents did not order.

Wow.  That escalated quickly.

This isn't a Black Lives Matter issue. Yes, I agree cops should verify a threat actually exists if they have that luxury, but they don't have x-ray vision or ESP. If they are called to a home where they believe a crazy person with a gun has committed murder and is holding hostages, they are going to show up with guns drawn. Any wrong move by the home-owner could result in violence. If I'm told an unstable person has a gun, and that person reaches for something in his pocket, I don't think I would wait to see if he shoots me in the head or takes a selfie with me before I do anything.

The onus here mostly lays on the person who made the call. Swatting is not the same as calling a number and asking for Amanda Love. It is setting up a highly dangerous situation. Even if no deaths occur this time, or the next time, eventually it will happen (and already has). If a cop is trigger happy and goes in shooting no matter what, sure, they should face the consequences, but that in no way should let the Swatter off the hook. They should still face jail time whether it turned out peaceful, or violent.
