He's plenty qualified. He did like 10 debates during the primary and was the target of everyone else in most of them.

And he wasn't the best debater, because he was up against some really good debaters. But he also improved markedly after being wrong-footed by the strong attacks on him in the first couple debates, and was perfectly competent 1v1 with Biden.

He'll do fine. He'll laugh at Trump a bunch and call something malarkey and he'll get off a couple prepared zingers.

Yep. Biden one-liners dripping with sarcasm. That will really draw a lot of disaffected voters who care about economic issues back to the Democratic camp.

/dripping with sarcasm

True. They would rather hear from someone who wouldn't shut up about them being a veteran.

If you think that debates involve candidates winning based upon the merits of their detailed policy prescriptions, I have some bad news for you.

Know which candidate had probably the strongest debates in the TV era from the standpoint of offering and defending robust policies? Al Gore.

Know what the takeaway from those debates was? That Al Gore lost because he was boring and kept sighing.

Unpopular Opinion.

Hillary wiped the floor with Trump...

And yet still lost the election.

no, it works for people who vote *Republican*, because they see two senile apes flinging poop at each other and think hell yeah our ape flung the most poop. people who consider voting democrat see "oh great I'm covered in poop" and don't vote at all

Because you say so? lol. Dude a candidate cracking an occasional joke has happened in like every damn debate ever. It never decided an election. Calm down.

I think he should skip.  He has little to gain and much to lose.  No Trumper is going to be convinced to vote for Biden no matter how bad Trump looks.  Meanwhile, Biden even meeting with Trump gives Trump an air of legitimacy that he literally and figuratively hasn't earned.  It's exactly like Trump meeting w/ Kim.

2020-08-04 1:30:41 PM
There's almost no way that Biden can "lose" the debates. And almost no way Trump can "win" them. Look at the interview with swan, or the one he did with fox not too long ago. Trump doesn't have anything to run on and he can't answer simple questions, even to deflect them.

Biden should be acting like the debates are the best thing in the world. He should be demanding more. Asking for tougher moderators. Begging for wider audiences. Trump's going to either fold and back out on his own, or he's going to embarrass himself. Biden just needs to let it happen.

Biden backing out gives Trump the argument that he's old, he's weak, he's afraid of Trump, he knows he'll be beat. And it walks in to Trump's plans. Trump doesn't want this debate. If he doesn't want it Biden should.

2020-08-04 1:34:47 PM

RussianPotato: If Biden doesn't debate that's a quick road to him losing.

I'll agree with you there.  Trump, however, has set the bar so low that if he can literally crawl on stage, shiat himself, throw a bible at a nun, and slither offstage, his voters will try to call it a win. Biden could stand on stage, recite Tostoy works backwards while simultaneously solving world peace and re-publican conservatives would try to call him senile.

2020-08-04 1:35:05 PM
I kind of agree that the debates haven't really been a useful tool lately, but I'd have to think that Biden would want to debate Trump.  As he showed with his debate performances against Palin and Ryan, putting vacuous idiots who think they're God's gift to America in their plate is his strong suit.

2020-08-04 1:35:13 PM

RussianPotato: Devolving_Spud: Is there a reason to debate?  Trump doesn't debate, he just spouts talking points, lies, and assorted word salad.  Look at the recent Swan interview, where he can barely be kept on topic.  It's not worth debating him.

Biden should do what he does; keep speaking publicly to the issues at hand, and stressing solutions instead of rhetoric.

If Biden doesn't debate that's a quick road to him losing.

Rick Scott barely beat that senile old astronaut in Florida's senate race.  And that only happened because of the vicious attack ads against the senile old astronaut, who really needed to be put out to pasture.  A refusal to debate means Biden is going to be viewed as weak (the worst), old, senile, and scared.  That's not a good look for a presidential candidate.

I think this is more fear that things are going too good for Biden and 2020 will find a way to fark it up.

I haven't heard anything about this from biden's camp. I'd expect that even if they'd rather not do them all they have to do is wait for Trump to cancel.

Hickory-smoked: HugeMistake: "Never interrupt your enemy while he's in the process of making a mistake".

And Trump is always in the process of making a mistake.

Biden will never get a word in edgewise.

If Trump has his way, he'll debate Biden so long as Biden is tied into a chair with a gag so that Trump can bloviate for the entire 'debate'.

2020-08-04 1:54:49 PM
Every time Trump speaks, reply with "That's (x) lies, with a total of (y + x) so far." For the entire debate, just keep pointing out he's lying and the running total. When Biden is asked a question, give the rehearsed message, let Trump reply, and keep saying, "That's (x) more lies. (y + x) lies so far."

Trump will stroke out before the debate ends.

2020-08-04 1:54:59 PM
Trump won't cancel the debates (although he should)
Look at the Axios interview with Swan. If he Han an ounce of self awareness he would never have agreed to that sit down. But he did. And Swan left a Trump colored smear on the West Wing carpet. But! Trump thinks he won! He thinks he came off looking great.

Kuta: PainInTheASP: If the debates aren't held, it will be because the RNC and Team Trump have finally talked some sense into the orange shiatgibbon.  They didn't even want to televise the coronation convention. They know what Biden will do to him and they still have downballot races that they have a chance (small) of winning.  They don't want anything to rock the boat, let alone repeatedly ram it into a goddamn iceberg.

There won't be a debates, but it will be framed by the administration as the leftist Chinavirus being deliberately planted in the dressing room shiaaer by immigrant Antifa or some such.

I don't think either the Dems or Reps want a debate. Neither candidate is at their peak.  Both have serious cognitive deficiencies.  Both are well into their 70s.  They don't want the resulting shiatshow to jeopardize their duopoly on power.

By comparison, doddering Ronald Reagan was a youthful 69 when inaugurated.

Bow down before the one you serve.

In June 2020, the Trump campaign requested the commission organize a fourth debate since some vote-by-mail ballots could be sent prior to the first debate. In a phone call with Frank Fahrenkopf, the co-chair of the commission, Trump campaign manager Brad Parscale said, "We want fair debates. We want them sooner and we want a bigger schedule. We also don't want them up against football games competing for viewers."[

The Trump campaign also requested that both campaigns be permitted to select and veto moderators.

The Biden campaign responded in a letter to the commission, "Our position is straightforward and clear: Biden will accept the Commission's debates, on the Commission's dates, under the Commission's established format and the Commission's independent choice of moderators." Biden campaign manager Jennifer O'Malley Dillon called the request a distraction.

That's my bet as well, and I don't think Biden will mind much. Personally, while I want to see a VP debate, I don't really care to watch a Biden/trump discussion. It's just an exposition game, generating endless obsession over every Biden gaffe and trump lie, with zero effect on the final vote.
