Has subby actually been in New York? The people there are absolutely traumatised by what they went through over three months.

Economies just don't recover from what happened, especially in the absence of Federal support.

People do not go out like they used to.

They save rather than spend.

Without any demand, businesses see no reason to invest.

Millions are unemployed.

People are leaving the city.

30,000 people died in 3 months, 10 times that were hospitalised or disabled.

It's an unprecedented 3 month long natural disaster to America's largest city, and the Federal Government is withholding aid because the President's feelings are hurt.

And when the economy rebounds after we get a POTUS willing to take on the issue nationally, we'll see small business startups once again take off.

What we really need to do is enforce monopoly laws to breakup the megacorps to give small businesses a chance to compete once again.   It's better across the board.

They would have survived had they committed fraud and bilked the PPP system like many on the Right did. Doing the right thing and telling the truth don't coexist well with our current presidential administration.

not the pandemics fault Subby ? Not the Trump administrations for letting us die for political reasons ? but the guy who with no federal assistance and hundreds of thousands of constituents dying took a course of action that now has NY basically under control for the moment

Not a Cuomo fan at all but he has handled the pandemic about as best as he could considering the situation on the ground and in DC.

I still think Cuomo is an asshole but his handling of the pandemic has been solid

So Subby thinks this is all Mean Ol' Cuomo's fault that he shut everything down and that he should have just let the hospital system collapse to the level of Mogadishu c. 1992 and that people would just bravely come into the office and there wouldn't still be a massive economic collapse because people refused to come to work, places would either go out of business or have layoffs due to the plunge in business WITHOUT a bailout, as well as people getting fired for refusing to come to the office and businesses having to contend with multiple lawsuits regarding forcing people to come to the office?

Been here in NYC forever.  Going to be here to rebuild.  IF people had abided across the country, things would have opened up as in other countries, and that would have saved so many of those companies.  But we didn't.  Some companies didn't have enough in cash on hand, and that's a tough place to be especially in hospitality.  Future businesses in these spaces should have more cash reserves, or stay smaller longer.

As someone who was deeply embedded in that particular environment, I recognized it wasn't sustainable, and moved on to something that was better suited for the future.  We shuttered our hospitality startup, not because it wouldn't be useful, but because we would need for the entire industry to adjust.  Really frustrating, and ended up losing two years invested, but I'm not blaming anyone who tried to get the curve under control early, and shut things down.

That's because I recognize that people's lives are more important than money, so we should do what we can to protect those lives, even if it costs us.  You can disagree, and that's fine.  You'll judge me as being naive, and I'll judge you as being amoral, and we'll never be friends, and I think we'll both be ok with that, but as someone who lost two years salary and savings, I feel like I can say that shutting things down wasn't the issue.  The issue was and remains to be those who put their own selfish wants above everything else.

It was obvious when this thing started that the only way to get through it without farking the whole country would be to give everyone replacement income(not to businesses but to the people), suspend all rent, mortgage and loan repayments(including interest) and provide free health care for the duration of the pandemic.  We could have weathered the storm and then sprung back with a stronger economy than before, but the investor class and the republicans would rather trash the economy and have hundreds of thousands die than demonstrate how the government can help people.  They need people to be scared of the government helping people.  It's how the investor class maintains their outsized power.  Reagan famously said something dumb like the most terrifying words are 'I'm from the government and I'm here to help' and he was right, insofar as conservatives fear a government that can and will help its people.  They want a weak government that is subordinate to the whims of the ultra-wealthy.

Except for forcing nursing homes, containing the most vulnerable population, to take coronavirus-infected patients, who then infected the entire facilities, killing many people.

This is just the beginning. The pandemic is going to reshape everything about our culture in ways we're not going to fully understand for years. The massive shift to remote working alone will be a game changer. If I'm not tied to an office I don't need a second car to drive there, I don't need to live in or near a major urban area, I don't need to go out to lunch on my break, I don't need to have as much child care as I'm at home more, my company doesn't need to rent expensive real estate downtown. Maybe I move to a cheaper area and shift the political dynamic. 10% of NYC population moving to the Midwest where real estate is cheaper would be a massive political shift. People who stayed home may decide to not reenter the work force. We may see a shift back towards single income homes. We will see an increase in home schooling and in online learning for college. Changes on global travel and tourism, more companies moving towards automation in production especially in food production and service industry jobs. Changes in public policy as more people see the need for expanded social services.

These are just the changes off the top of my head. There's going to be many more. We're not going back to the world we had before.

Gentrification in NYC started in the 1980s.  Since then there have been a few waves of urban renewal/gentrification.  I go to NYC once a year, last year it felt like the entire city was a construction zone.  It turns out that converting what used to be middle class neighborhoods and low income areas into luxury condos increases the retail $/sq ft.  Krugman calls this the third wave of gentrification.  This can be seen as a loss of retail and other businesses in expensive neighborhoods because none of them are profitable given the lease rates, except for a few long long long term family owned buildings where the owners for some insane reason choose to hold onto the property and operate the businesses at below market rates.
I see both in the Boston area, there is a plywood boarded up theater in Harvard Square, the new owner did that since the growth in value of the empty building is so high it would simply be a pain in the arse to deal with a tenant who probably couldn't afford to pay enough to make it worth his while.
We are way way beyond new laws reforming property in the US.  Large property owners can deduct real estate losses in perpetuity, get special snowflake loans, and can pretty much build what they want local residents be damned.  It's time to tax their income the same as wages, and only allow them to deduct losses for that year only and no more depreciation deductions (just like ordinary home owners).

If there was any kind of support for small businesses in this country this wouldn't be happening. But nope, they got eight weeks of rent and wages covered and now anyone who can't make ends meet is on their own. It's a disgrace and it's going to make any economic recovery take far longer, and cause a ton of bankruptcies and evictions and such in the meantime.

We must find a more moral form of capitalism if we're ever going to advance as a society

Gonna blow your mind, but the New York Times sometimes publishes stories about New York. Espescially in the New York section of the New York Times. Sit down for this one, but there is also a City section of the New York times, which is published in New York City.

/just wait til you learn where the Los Angeles Times are printed.

This is all Cuomo's fault  There was this virus and he was doing a bad job.  The job was not a good job.  If you look at the job he was doing, not a good job.  Ron DeSantis did a great job.  He did so many things that made it such a great job.  I dare you to criticize a single part of the job he did.  Such good job.  So many great job.

When Joe Biden is elected, one of his first actions should be asking Elizabeth Warren to create and lead a legislative task force that creates a plan to reshape our economy.  He does that, and they actually work together to enact it, and this country will be much better off in the next decade.

This is exactly what everyone here in NYC has been saying, friends/family etc (myself included). You can be considered an effective leader and still have shiatty policies.
We can change laws, we can't bring our friends and family back from the dead.

Trump HATES Cuomo specifically because he knows that despite being hit first and hardest and all the missteps and mistakes made during chaos and crisis that Cuomo is walking away from this with a net-positive score. Who knew being honest and humble would take you this far?!
