Spent or will spend?

Paid for when the price is sky high. Delivered when the price is low.

Shrewd businessman my ass, it's just one more example of him giving taxpayer money to a buddy.

It's the price that's the main issue. Would have thought headline should have referred to Trump paying $50,000 for machines that Obama negotiated to buy for $9000

At the rate we're going, we'll still need them then.

When  Peter Navarro - Assistant to the President, Director of Trade and Manufacturing Policy - and other senior officials in the White House negotiated a new contract with Philips, they ended up scrapping the Obama-era terms and agreed to pay almost five-times the price set under those terms.

And that's what we like to call "The Art of the Deal," folks.

Another shrewd move by the fiscal conservatives!

2020-08-04 7:31:25 PM
the Trump Administration repeatedly delayed an Obama-era order from the health-technology company Philips for 10,000 ventilators,

See it's Obama's fault.  Trump is just making america great again again.

2020-08-04 7:32:08 PM
He bought enough ventilators so that every American left alive by the time they actually get here can have one all for themselves...

Giant Meteor 2020 please......

/so tired.

2020-08-04 7:32:47 PM
The whole story is a reason to impeach him:
* contract delayed, delayed, delayed -- even though it would have had the ventilators in the national stockpile before the outbreak of the virus
* Trump lied about the whole preparedness
* contract re-negotiated at 5X the price -- and then not have machines available until 2022
* Trump lied about preparedness; lied about his incompetency; lies about what he was handed on day 1 of his administration

200,000 Americans will die before the election because of it.

2020-08-04 7:32:50 PM
FTAWhile Philips had sold ventilators to other purchasers for prices as low as $9,327 per unit, the Trump Administration ended up paying $50,000 per unit.

The higher the value of the contract, the bigger the kickback. This is govt Acquisition 101 here folks

Trump didn't personally do that, it's just government in general that's the problem. People should be responsible for their own ventlators

Subby, you misunderstand. It was a beautiful business deal. Trump, or someone connected to him, made money off the deal. Isn't that the job of a good businessman? To make money without regard to social harm?

The kickbacks are too small at $9327.

How is the price the main issue durning a pandemic where people are and will continue to die for want of a respirator?

It will be a huge scandal of the Biden presidency!  He fecklessly accepted delivery of overpriced ventilators that arrived after they were needed.

Any chumps want to put money on whether we will here some lead paint chip eating republican mouth breather make this argument with as much sincerity that a republican con-man can manage?

There's two things going on here. One is Trump getting a ridiculously stupid deal when they could have just called in the Obama-era negotiated terms, perhaps with a reasonable accommodation on price to step up the timeline after extensions had been approved prior.

The other is Phillips jacking up the price 400% during a plague. I don't know what the pestilent equivalent of a war-profiteer is, but I think it looks like that.

It's worse than that, if I read the contract right.  The 9000 figure was the going rate in January.  Here's the rate from the original contract that was never fulfilled.
